Turning to his side, Gerald noticed that what made the sound was a puppy that was slowly limping towards him! Upon closer inspection, the puppy appeared to have a broken leg. Moreover, there were visible scars all over his body as well.
When it finally reached Gerald's side, it lay at his feet before immediately starting to lick the tip of his shoe.
Gerald was more surprised than anything. After all, he had not expected to meet this little fellow so deep in the forest. On one hand, it was a miracle that this puppy was still alive with so many ferocious beasts lurking within the forest.
“... Can you ask me to save you?” ask Gerald.
Bark twice in response, then continue to lick Gerald's shoes.
While Gerald—'s first thought upon seeing the puppy— was to extract his blood to create blood essence, after the puppy started licking his shoes, he realized two things. First of all, the puppy was too small to perform a useful blood essence extraction.
Second, he realized that the puppy had a rather spiritual nature. After all, he had managed to survive this long in the interior of the forest. Moreover, it was now begging for his help! With all that in mind, Gerald now knows that killing him is almost unbearable for him. Besides, he's not so cruel.
“It's sad.. I don't know who left you here, but you were lucky to happen to hit me!” gerald said as he shook his head while patting the puppy on the head.
“Unfortunately, I can't spend too much time lazing around here, although I'll help wrap your wounds first. From then on, however, we'll be separated. I don't have time to help you escape the forest, understand?” gerald added as he quickly began patching the puppy's wounds.
Not long after, he managed to stop the puppy's bleeding and bandaged the open wound he found.
“It would be a good step if Grandpa Welson and the others could catch up to me now. After all, since foxes prefer human blood, each of us can only donate a little of our blood! We can then lure the fox out again for sure! But who knows how long I will have to wait for them to arrive. If I wait any longer, the fox can escape from the valley and I won't even know it!” gerald murmured to himself in a depressed tone as he carried out the final check on the puppy.
The now bandaged puppy, on the other hand, crawled in front of Gerald and simply rested his head again at Gerald's meal.
“Hey now, I've already told you that I don't have time to worry about you anymore, right? Sorry, but there is something important that I have to do now.” Gerald said with a bitter smile as he looked at the little puppy clinging to him.
At that moment, Gerald's ears twitched slightly. Someone is coming towards him. The puppy itself instantly got up and started barking towards the direction the sound was coming from.
After some barking, he began to wag his tail excitedly as he looked back at Gerald before blinking his eyes.
Turning to look at the puppy—whose tongue is now sticking out—Gerald just asked with a wry smile on his face, “So, you are just as wary of me! Still, aren't you afraid of the possibility that people coming will kill you after you attract their attention?”
Surprisingly, the puppy simply raised his head a little higher while continuing to stare at Gerald, a strange clarity in his eyes.
"…Hmm? Could it be that you listened to my murmur earlier ...? Did you know that I need human blood? Is that why you deliberately tried to attract that person?"
Gerald only made such a bold claim because after reading the Book of Beasts, Gerald was now more or less able to figure out what most animals meant by their actions.
Upon realizing that the message was delivered, the puppy immediately nodded before wagging his tail happily.
“Well, I'll be cursed! You really have a spiritual nature! ” Gerald said as he patted the puppy's head.
Not long after when the figure could finally be seen from afar. Quickly walking towards Gerald, the person who finally came out of the miasma let out a cold snort before saying, “No wonder I can't track you no matter how hard I look for you! So you've been running away here all along! ”
Naturally, it was none other than the old man from before.
Gerald himself was very happy to see the old man. Rubbing the puppy's head gently to show that he is doing a good job, Gerald then replied, “Oh? You're hunting me? I really didn't realize it!”
