"About your mother?"
Jessica nodded. "I just thought that my mom would hate me" Jessica said.
"Why are you saying that about your own mother? Come on, Jessica, a mother can't possibly hate her own child. Your mother couldn't have hated you." Nathan retaliated. "What's going on?"
"Before, he came in here.and he.he told me.. if I should come back to Singapore with him."
Nathan chose silence to listen to the girl's story.
Jessica sighed softly before returning to speak, "I had lied to her before and told her I was going to Thailand for a vacation. I mean, I can't even tell you what really happened to me and why I was in Thailand. Just think about it, can I tell my mother the truth?"
Nathan shook his head, "it would be the end of your relationship and your father's if your mother found out."
"That's it." Jessica told Nathan. "So, I had to go back to lying to her by saying that I was okay. I also said that right now I want to stay with my father."
"And I guess. I don't think he responded well to that. He would disagree, right?" Nathan confirmed.
Jessica nodded, "Yes you're right. My mother disagrees."
"Of course, he must have thought that your father couldn't take care of you." Nathan folded his hands on his chest while one of his hands was twitching his chin.
"You know Nathan, my mother even told me that I needed a good influence in my life. And my father doesn't fall into that category. She.." Jessica could barely continue her sentence. Her tears started to come out.
Nathan took the water on the nightstand, handed it to Jessica "do you want a drink first?"
"Thank you." Jessica said as she picked up the glass and held it up. He looked down, looked at the glass in his hand and then smiled.
"My mother also threatened me by saying that if I still want to be financially supported by her, then I have to obey her words."
"Financially?"
"Yes, my point is that if I still want to be financed directly by him every month, then I have to come home with him." Jessica explained.
"And what did you tell him?" ask Nathan.
"I said that .. yes .. I don't want to go home. I don't want to go back to Singapore. I don't need the money either."
Nathan nodded. He remained silent and continued to listen to the story of the girl. Her heart was moved as she watched Jessica daydream. The girl was silent, looking towards the door of her nursery. Perhaps he was thinking about the quarrel that had just occurred between him and his mother a moment ago.
"What happened after that?"
Jessica turned to Nathan, smiled slightly and looked down again.
"We keep arguing. At that time I also told my mother that she always forced her will on me." Jessica said. "I also said that I studied hard to please her but my mother was never satisfied."
"My mom has only one wish for me. For him I have to be number one in everything. So I told mom that for now I want to stay with my dad." Jessica spoke at length."
"You know why, don't you?" Jessica wondered to Nathan. "I wanted to be with my dad because I was worried. I meani... Dimitri is still out there. What if he's chasing after me later?"
"But what if Dimitri was after you? What if he does the same thing to you again." Nathan answered. "Well, but I think you'd be much safer if you were with your mother in Singapore."
"Come on Nathan, it'll be the same. Imagine if I went back to Singapore and he came to chase me there? What would happen if he found my mother there? He wouldn't mind shooting my mom" Jessica said.
"But at least you're"
"No, I have to stay with dad until everything is safe. Right now I can't tell my mother about this matter. He won't understand. Never will be. If he knew what you were doing then. yes, he would definitely be angrier than he is right now."
"Jessica, whatever you guys argued before, if I were your mother I would be worried too. Yeah, I think he just wants what's best for you" Nathan tries to convince Jessica. "And she's still your mother. You have to solve this problem with your mother. You have to do it."
"I heard John tell mom that they shouldn't bother coming here to see me" Jessica said. "It turns out I was just wasting time in their sight. I'm inconsiderate, selfish, reckless and-"
"So, you're not like that" Nathan said as he looked into Jessica's eyes. "I don't think you're like one of those things you say."
Jessica snorted, "You even just met me less than a week ago. You don't know me either. How's you-"
"I know you're good" Nathan cut again. "I know you're humorous and funny. I know you hate paintings because you don't understand the meaning. I know you can eat more pizza than I can. I know you are very loyal and dear to your father, regardless of him lying to you. You might also like to drink a lot, but.well, from my experience, there are many others who do just that. And for selfish?" Nathan was silent for a while before finally returning to talk. "I didn't see any sign of it. Yes, for now…"
And that's when tears suddenly fell on Jessica's cheeks. The girl started crying. And that made Nathan wonder what was going on. Did he speak wrong?
Nathan never understood how to comfort someone. He quickly moved from his seat closer to Jessica and wrapped his arm around the girl's shoulder.
And in that very second, Nathan became self-deprived when suddenly Jessica leaned her head on his shoulder and sobbed more and more in his arms. And just then, Nathan slowly raised his hand and placed it on Jessica's head, rubbing the girl's hair slowly.
Nathan keeps his position and makes Jessica feel comfortable. He wasn't too sure how long they had been sitting together in that position before he suddenly heard a ring from Jessica's iPhone from inside the bag.
"I'm going to get it," Nathan said as he took his hug off Jessica and grabbed Jessica's bag, pulling it out of Jessica's bag.
Nathan hands the phone to Jessica before standing on the side of the bed, standing near Jessica. Jessica held Nathan's arm back as she finally opened the message on her phone.
Nathan's eyes suddenly widened shortly after he saw the contents of a message in the form of a photo on Jessica's phone from where he stands today. She looked out the window before she looked back at Jessica's phone screen.
The phone went off again. Another message came in after a while and Jessica reopened the message and read her words.
