CHAPTER 96: 96

Chapter 96: 96

John looked around the room, making sure no enemies were waiting. The room had the same dilapidated look as the palace, with worn-out bricks and pillars. The room was lit by torches hanging on the wall, though John had no idea how they had remained lit all along.

After sweeping the room for a while, he made sure that the room was empty. The room was not very large, only several tens of meters wide and long, and John quickly saw six doors across the room.

He walked towards the six doors, and quickly realized that there was an engraving of an image on top of each door.

“What is this?”

John took a closer look at the carving, and noticed that it was a simple drawing, which he quickly identified as various elements.

Each of these engravings seems to be aligned with an element. Water, earth, fire, air, wood. ‘

John's eyes sparkled brightly as he looked at the carving above the rightmost door. The carving featured a simple lightning bolt. Ever since studying the Celestial Lightning Script, John had been eager to begin developing it, but had never found an opportunity to do so.

‘Do these symbols mean I need the strength of the related elements to pass the exam, or is the reward based on the elements?’

John pondered his question, but could not find a definitive answer.

‘Well, there is only one way to find out.’

John walked to the door and pushed him. After a brief struggle against the door, John was able to open it, and widened his eyes in surprise.

The door revealed a vast world right behind him, far larger than he had imagined. Although he had yet to step past the doorway, John could see most of the world before him. Dark gray clouds churned violently in the sky, and lightning bolts could be seen continuously flashing within the clouds. The ground was charred black, and no vegetation was visible anywhere, making the world look very apocalyptic.

John took a deep breath as he stared at the world before him before he took a step forward and entered through the door.

Bang out!

Just as he stepped past the doorway, he heard a loud explosion behind him and quickly turned around.

“It's gone!”

The door John passed through could not be found, and all he could see was a vast world of lightning in all directions. He turned in all directions to see if he could see anything important, but it was the same scorched earth and silent sky in all directions. He hoped that some lightning in the clouds struck towards him so that he could develop the Heavenly Lightning Script, but he was very disappointed, the lightning remained in the clouds.

After looking around for some time, John noticed that in one particular direction, the lightning in the sky seemed more concentrated and powerful.

“Maybe there's something there!”

John decided to walk in that direction. The scorched ground cracked beneath his feet as he walked forward. A small mountain range several thousand feet high immediately appeared in front of John.

‘These mountains seem to extend in both directions for a long time. I guess I should climb it. ‘

Although the black mountain was charred thousands of feet high, with sheer cliffs and jagged rocks, John did not care much about the climb. His strong body allowed him to climb the mountain with relative ease, and soon he found himself already halfway up the mountain slope.

A loud, raucous roar entered John's ears and he quickly looked towards the source of the sound.

Bang out!

Stone and earth explode at John's location, revealing a large beast as the source of his voice and attack. John managed to dodge the attack at the last moment, and calmly took out his scythe as he stared directly at the beast.

‘What kind of animal is this? I don't think I've ever heard of anything like this. ‘

The beast in front of John was six feet tall, and stood upright with four strong and thick limbs. It was white with bright blue stripes along its fur, and looked similar to a tiger. Small flashes of lightning danced over his skin.

‘That animal is the element of lightning! I've never seen a lightning-element beast before. ‘

John could not help but be surprised. Elemental beasts were extremely rare in his part of the Yuan Continent, and were almost always powerful monsters. They would rule over large swaths of land, and only the strongest clans and sects could challenge them.

The Fenix Clan had one fire element monster in its care, and it was one of the clan's most powerful assets. However, John had never seen or heard of a lightning beast before, which was why this beast shocked him so much.

‘This one seems to be just a middle Fog Creation beast. Why did it attack me? ‘

John could not understand the actions of the beast. Although animals were not intelligent, they still had sharp instincts. The beast should be able to tell that John's essence cultivation was at the last Fog Creation realm, and that he was stronger than the beast.

However, the ferocious beast continued to attack John, somewhat surprising to him.

The explosion!

The ground exploded again as the beast attacked John, but he was only able to hit the ground as John easily avoided it. John danced back and forth for a few minutes dodging the beast's attack while studying it closely.

‘Yeah, I didn't learn anything from his actions, so I'd better end this.’

A sharp ray of sickle Qi flew out from John's scythe, and easily split the beast in two. John collected the corpse and studied it a little before continuing to climb the mountain further.

A few minutes later…

The roar!

Roars!

Roars!

Several loud roars echoed once more, and John soon found himself face to face with over a dozen beasts. The ferocious beasts were of several different types, but they were all lightning-element beasts, much to John's surprise.
