Chapter 28: 28

John took out his map and examined it closely.

“This should....huh? No sign on the map. Far enough from what I can say. Why is there a village so far from the main road?”

John was still about a hundred miles from the main road leading to the Dreadel Kingdom. He had not expected to experience civilization this fast.

The village was a few miles away and had a large wooden wall surrounding the perimeter. Several hundred buildings can be seen inside the walls, while farmland surrounds the outside of the walls.

“Let's check, I guess. Maybe I can find an inn to live in. It's been weeks since I've had a proper shower and meal.”

John walked towards the main gate of the village.

“Stop! Who's that?”

“Hmm? Are they normal humans? They were not even Body Refinement cultivators. Why would a normal human act as a city guard in the middle of the forest?”

John approached the guard before saying, “I'm just a traveler who happens to be in this village. What is this place? No sign on any map?”

John wondered why the village was not marked.

The guards eased slightly at John's reply. One step forward and replied, “If that's the case, you can go in. The entrance fee is two copper coins. As for your enquiry ... this village was founded by those who are trying to distance themselves from the Dreadel Kingdom.”

John handed over two copper coins before asking, “You're all just ordinary humans. Does this village have a cultivator guard?”

The main guard hesitated for a moment before replying, “Our village has no farmers. Almost all of its inhabitants are trying to distance themselves from the world of farmers, so we founded this village about a decade ago.”

“Isn't that a little dangerous?” ask John. “There are Body Refinement level monsters everywhere, and if you are unlucky, you might even meet Mist Creation level monsters. What would you do if it happened?”

“The walls are sturdy enough and high enough to face Body Refinement level monsters. As for Mist Creation level monsters ... suppose we have a way to deal with it as well” replied the guard.

John noticed that the guard had a complicated expression on his face when he discussed the Mist Creation level monsters,

“Is there any lodging in this village?” ask John.

“Yes, Nightfall Inn. It is located in the middle of the village and has a plaque of the moon symbol plastered in front of it. You will easily recognize it.”

“Thank you.” John thanked the guard before passing through the open gate.

As soon as he stepped in, John could see hundreds of people running around, living their daily lives. John started walking towards the center of the village, while scanning everyone he passed by with heavenly sense.

“They are really normal humans. How did they face such a powerful beast?” thought John. He immediately approached the center of the village, where he saw a building inscribed with the moon.

“Sorry, how much is one room price?”

The innkeeper turned around and was a little surprised to see John.

“Not often we get strangers around here. What do you want?” ask the owner of the inn.

“I want to rent a room for one night. How much is it for one night?” ask John.

“One room is twenty copper coins.” The innkeeper paused for a moment before saying, “I suggest you not stay inside the village tonight.”

Confused by his answer, John asked, “Why is that?”

The innkeeper hesitated for a moment before saying, “Some bad people will come here tomorrow. You'd better not be here when they arrive.”

“Oh” replied John. “Thank you for your concern, but I'll be fine.” John handed twenty copper coins. The innkeeper stared at him for a while before turning around and taking him to his room.

The room is quite small, with a bed, wardrobe, and a small bathroom. John immediately cleaned himself up before taking a new robe from his storage and putting it down before going up to the bed.

“Fieh! It's been a while since I was in bed. I will take a break from cultivation for one day. Tonight I will just rest well.” John was sound asleep.

The next morning, John was awakened by a loud commotion.

“Hah? What happened?”

John quickly left his room and walked downstairs. The entire main floor of the inn was empty, even the innkeeper was gone. Feeling strange, John thought about what the innkeeper told him last night.

He walked out of the inn and towards the main road. A few hundred meters down the road, John could see thousands of people gathered in the center of the city. Curious about what was going on, John walked down the street and approached the meeting. Upon arriving at the meeting, John stood on the far side of the crowd and watched.

The whole village must be here, John thought. Thousands of people gathered. John's eyes looked at the crowd until he saw six men standing in front of the huge crowd.

“Hopemaker?”

Although John was too far away for the heavenly sense to reach out to the six people to see their cultivation level, John knew only from the natural pressure they exuded that they were cultivators.

“Although I can't be sure, they seem to be the cultivators of the Fog Creation realm. I think this city is a free city of cultivators? What are they doing here?”

As John thought about the six men, one of the men stepped forward and shouted.

“Alright, where's my money?” The man who stepped forward was quite muscular and had a scar on his face, making him look extremely ruthless.
