Chapter 10: 10

“Ahhh” shouted John as he woke up, hurriedly sitting on his bed while panting.

John took a few seconds to analyze his surroundings before he realized he was still in his bed at home. “It was just a dream? It feels so alive, like what I dreamed of actually happened.”

John sat there for a few minutes recalling his dream. “Well, that must be a dream. There was no way such an explosion could have happened. It seems like the entire universe will be destroyed by something like that,” John thought as he got out of bed.

John went and cleaned himself up before walking into his wardrobe, wearing his favorite black robe.

“Luckily mother gave me a bundle of these black robes, otherwise I would have quickly exhausted” thought John while wearing that robe.

After getting ready for the day, John walked downstairs and had breakfast with his family. “What will you do today John?” rachel Fenix asked as she watched her son gobble up his food, with a slight smile on his face.

John swallowed the food he had in his mouth before replying, “I will probably go to the library again today and maybe the training area. I just got some new weapons so I have to test them.”

“Oh that? Be careful when skimming. Remember also that tonight is the night the clan is having your celebration party. Go home before dark so you can freshen up and come to the party on time.” replied Rachel Fenix before sipping the water.

John had completely forgotten about it with everything that happened, but now he remembered that tonight was a night of celebration.

John finished his breakfast and thanked his mother before exiting the front door. After walking for a few minutes towards the martial practice area, John looked over his shoulder for a few seconds. Seeing no one following him, John turned around and headed towards the clan gate.

After walking for some time, John arrived at the front gate of the Fenix Clan. He greeted the two guards stationed at the gate before walking past him.

“More forest hunting today John?” ask one of the guards.

“Yes, don't tell anyone,” John replied with a timid smile before passing through the clan gate and walking down the wide road that runs away from that gate.

The Skycleave Mountains stretch for thousands of miles, with the forest of the Skycleave at the base of the mountain range stretching thousands of miles in each direction. The Fenix clan was located at the base of one of the Skycleave mountains, and had cleared quite a number of areas around the clan grounds.

The path that led out of the Fenix Clan finally branched out in various directions leading to different clans and kingdoms. However, each road cuts through the forest of the Skycleave, making it a fairly dangerous journey to take without adequate protection.

John continued walking for about an hour before he got to the branch on the road. At this point, John was quite deep within the forest of the Skycleave, with Body Refinement level monsters visible everywhere.

“It's around the same place as last time,” thought John inwardly as he veered down the road and started walking further into the forest on the side of the road. John walked for a few minutes before hearing a loud howl.

“Awoooo!”

The mighty roar of wolves echoed throughout the forest, at which time many similar howls were heard responding to the first howl. A smile appeared on John's face as he started walking towards the source of the howl.

A few minutes later, John walked through the trees and into the open in the forest, where he saw about a dozen Earth Wolves lying lazily under the scorching sun.

“I hope you don't miss me too much. Our meeting was last interrupted, but this time it was just you and me” John exclaimed as he began walking towards the horde.

Surprised by the sudden intruder, the wolves hurriedly stood up before growling towards the newcomer. Although the wolf recognized the boy as one they had hunted not long ago, there was a different air about him that made them feel danger.

John took out a Body Refinement-class greatsword from his storage ring and held it by his side. He stared at the wolf for a few seconds before pushing off the ground and dashing forward as fast as he could.

Before the wolves could react, John was in front of one of them, his greatsword slashing. The wolf raised its giant claws to fend off the sword, but was unable to stop the sword as it cut directly through the claw before proceeding towards the wolf's head.

“Bang!”

The sound of metal meeting bones rang out as John's sword pierced through the wolf's skull. John quickly steadied himself and turned around, his sword whistling to the side as he charged with all his strength at the three wolves attacking him from behind.

The sound of metal cutting through flesh and bones continuously rang out as John sliced through the three wolves with a single strike. Wolves could hardly believe what was happening before they fell to the ground, dead.

“Oh no, no,” cried John loudly as he began to chase. It took some time before John caught up with the first one, dropped his sword on top of the wolf and pierced its skull. This momentary attack was what the other wolves needed to keep their distance between John and themselves.

John hurriedly pulled out his sword from the dead wolf before continuing his pursuit. Weaving among the trees and jumping over a boulder, John chases the remaining wolves, traveling ever deeper into the forest of the Skycleave. Despite running with all his might, John could only slightly close the lid after a few minutes of running. After John continued to chase for nearly fifteen minutes, he suddenly stopped in his tracks and saw the wolves running off into the distance.

In front of him, John could see dozens of trees on his right-left painted with red marks. These marks were painted by the elders of the Fenix Clan, and signified that beyond this point was an area where Mist Creation level monsters began to appear. Although John might have managed to avoid meeting a Mist Creation level monster, he knew the risks were not worth it.

“Well, I guess that's where the hunt for Earth Wolves today ends. I managed to take down five wolves, so it wasn't a waste of time. I have to look around the area to look for more powerful Body Refinement level monsters. To fully test my strength, since those wolves are at best only comparable to Tendon Refinement cultivators. “

John kept his sword in his storage ring and turned around. He walked away for a few minutes from the red-painted trees, before stopping and taking a look at the area. Not seeing a single wild beast in the area, John turned to the side and began to walk in parallel with the red-toothed trees, even though it was quite a distance away from them.

After walking for a few minutes, John stopped as he narrowed his eyes.

A hundred feet in front of him, on top of a big felled tree, slept a big lizard.

‘Aka Iron Leather Lizard!’ John silently muttered as he observed the beast. The lizard was eight feet from head to tail, and about four feet tall. It has a dark brown skin with small spines protruding from its spine.

As the name suggests, Ironhide lizards are known for their strong skin. Among all the Body Refinement level monsters, Ironhide Lizards boasted one of the strongest defenses, while possessing powerful attacks comparable to Blood Refinement cultivators. They were ferocious beasts that were avoided by almost all Body Refining cultivators.

John took out his greatsword from his storage ring and observed the lizard for some time, before silently approaching the lizard. When John was about fifteen feet away from the Ironhide Lizard, the beast slowly opened its eyes and looked at John.

“Mendsis!”

The Lizard screeched as it saw John quickly approach him. John swung his greatsword with all his might before the lizard could react completely, leaving a deep but not fatal wound on its back.

“Wow, her skin is even stronger than I expected. It was only fitting that most Body Refinement cultivators avoided fighting with this beast” thought John as he quickly dashed backwards, dodging the lizard's tail as he swung it towards him.

John ran back towards the lizard, slashing it with his sword when he could find the gap and block the fast tail attack from the lizard.

The lizard's tail speed surprised John. He made a mental note of the speed and trajectory of the tail before his next attack. The two of them faced each other for a moment before one of them made a move. John moved towards the beast with his sword at a low ready position in front of him, preparing to block the tail or claw attack.

Knowing that he needs to make a crack to deliver a fatal blow to the creature, he, John plans to evade or fend off the next attack from the beast to find an opportunity to attack where the lizard's defenses are weakest. The lizard shifted to the left away from the fallen tree and slammed its tail into the ground, throwing away the ground and grass. John's visibility was cut in half, he could clearly see the lizard in front of him but could no longer see its tail. He knew that's when the creature would attack. John immediately swung his sword towards the lizard's eyes.

The lizard reacted exactly as John wanted; the beast raised its left claw in an attempt to block the attack overhead. At the same time, he wagged his tail towards John. But John's attack was just a trick. As soon as he saw the lizard react, he released his sword grip for half a second so that the blade would continue its bow and face down with the hilt facing upwards. He grasped the hilt and quickly stuck his sword into the ground below with its tip facing towards its tail.

The tail flew towards John from beyond his sight and struck the sword that John had placed on the ground to cut off part of his tail. The lizard screamed in pain as it pulled its tail back behind its body, leaving a trail of viscous blood behind it.

The fight continued for a while before John and the lizard separated. John gasped for breath while trying to catch his breath, but other than fatigue, John was unharmed. The lizard on the other hand was filled with dozens of deep wounds, blood dyeing its brown scales red.

“When to finish this” said John as he quickly ran towards the Ironhide Lizard. Although wounded, Lizard turned around and wagged his tail towards John. However, the lizard had clearly forgotten that half of its tail was gone. His attack failed to strike John, at which point he dashed forward and slammed his sword directly into the lizard's eyes.

“Push!”

Greatsword John pierced deeply into the lizard's eyes, before finally stopping when all but the hilt and hilt of the sword were visible. The lizard twitched for a while before it fell helplessly to the ground.

“Wah” John exhales as he struggles to catch his breath. “That's a pretty decent fight. This beast definitely deserved its reputation. I can see why most Blood Refinement cultivators would avoid fighting him. Without my weapon skill, it would be quite a tough fight.”

Smiling happily as he watched his victory, John placed the carcass of the lizard in his storage ring before muttering, “This lizard barely fits within the spatial dimension of this ring. I need to get a better ring if I start doing this more often.”

John looked up at the sky before realizing that the sky was starting to get darker, at which point he turned around and walked back to the main road. “I have to go home because it will soon be dark. Don't want to be caught in this forest at night.”

After walking for a few minutes, an uneasy feeling invaded John's senses. At first he thought it was his imagination, but as he continued walking, the uncomfortable feeling grew stronger and stronger. Trusting his instincts, John stopped and quickly turned around, his face paled as he stared ahead.
