“Theo, what the hell is this?” amaryllis protested when I pulled her hand to follow me to the backstage. “If you're angry about this outfit, I don't want to hear. The clothes you choose are all ugly. Do you think I want to come to this concert like a clown?”
“Sini! Here!” matt waved his hand at us. He looks very impatient.
Trouble me only. Why would unexpected events like this not be predicted, anyway? This is not the first concert they have ever performed. Their time does not prepare for everything if something bad happens?
“Matt? What are we going to do here?” tanya Amarylis turned enthusiastic. “Do we get a seat to see the concert closer?”
“What lo really can't be silent for a moment?” pissed me.
We'll be approaching my sister soon. He looked at me with a hopeful look, then looked back at us. I signaled that Amarilis was the one who would help him and his bandmates to start their music show.
“Kok, Brother Amarylis?” matt said disappointedly as he looked at me and Amarylis in turn. “We need a violinist, Theo.”
“Dia—” answer.
“I'm a violinist,” Amarylis said at the same time.
Matt looked at it from head to toe, then looked back at Amarylis's face. “Gue knows Big Brother likes to joke, but this one is not funny, Kak.”
“I can seriously play the violin,” said Amarilis again. “Traditional music concert like this I also performed.”
“Conser of regular music? It's an orchestra, Brother,” said Matt in frustration. He looked towards me. “Gue need someone who can accompany me to play ‘Moonlight Sonata Third Movement’. If it wasn't for the violinist would have been late, I wouldn't have panicked like this.”
“Ka-you will play Moo-moonlight Sonata—” Amarylis cannot finish that sentence and can only be dumbfounded.
“Ya, already. Change the song order. You art people love to make life difficult for you and others,” I complained.
Did he forget I didn't have many friends? I only took music lessons for a few years and didn't write it like he did. Where are some of my friends I still know? Amarilis is the only person I know who can play the violin.
“This orchestra will not peak if the song sequence must be changed again. You won't understand. Yeah, already. Let me ask my other friends.” He picked up his phone, tried to call someone else who could help him.
Amaryllis held onto that hand, blocking my sister from continuing her intentions. “Give me five minutes to warm up. I will accompany you,” Amarylis said confidently.
“Serious brother? ‘Third Movement’, lo, tempo presto agitato, not ‘Second Movement’, let alone First that allegro.” Matt looked at Amarylis suspiciously.
“I should have asked. You guys seriously picked that song on the first performance? I'm sure your violinist was nervous for mercy so he was deliberately late,” Amarylis said with a suspicious look. He seemed to understand what Matt was talking about.
“We chose it to welcome the attendance. If you start with a song with a moderato or andante tempo, people will be sleepy at the beginning.” Matt defended himself.
“You're talking a lot.” Amaryllis grabbed Matt's hand so my sister got carried away with him. “Come, we have to be fast so that the concert does not cancel.”
“Orchestra,” error Matt.
Although I have not played a musical instrument for a long time, I know what “Moonlight Sonata Third Movement” is. Beethoven's famous musical compositions are difficult to master. Surprisingly, people are more familiar with First and Third, but rarely know “Second Movement” from that title.
I went back to the hall and sat in my chair. Not long after, Chika filled the empty seat by my side. Just be right. I kicked him out, he came back. Mama had also clearly told him that Matt would object to the chair being taken by someone else.
“I didn't kick him out, so stand up and go back to your seat. When the business is done, he will need this chair,” I said sharply, tired of it.
He closed his lips, then stood up and returned to his seat. I sighed softly. What can he not understand from my attitude? After I repeatedly refused, she instead thought I was luring her to further solidify our relationship. What a strange person.
“What's up, son? Where is Amarilis? Is she going to the bathroom?” ask Mama confused.
“Later also Mama knew.” I purposely let him be curious.
At seven o'clock in the evening, the music begins. All the music players are ready in their respective places, including Matt who sits in front of the big piano on the left of the conductor. But I did not find Amaryllis. It turned out that he was introduced specifically as a guest.
Maybe they don't want to take a risk if he plays badly. Naturally, he was not a professional classical violinist. They had been training for months, while Amarylis had only joined a few minutes before the event began. The quality is clearly much different.
I was secretly relieved to see the clothes she was wearing. It's a good thing that he defied me today, so his appearance wasn't embarrassing. Or I will be ashamed of myself because of the dress that I deliberately choose that does not fit in his body.
“I just found out Amarylis can play the violin,” whispered Mama surprised. “What happened? Is Matt's friend missing?”
“He said, he will be late,” I replied briefly.
“Lo? Matt's been gone since noon, why don't they suspect a friend hasn't arrived before the concert?” ask Mama wonder. I just shrugged both my shoulders.
How can I answer that? This isn't my group. I'm also surprised they only found out about it a few minutes before the concert started. It's not just a professional orchestra. So many times watching Matt and his friends perform, only this time there is a problem of this magnitude.
Matt began to play and the room was filled with a quick movement of his fingers pressing keys for piano keys. But it's not him that makes me flabbergasted. Amaryllis followed his movements at the same speed. This is a difficult song if you rarely practice.
Unlike Matt who does not need a notebook, Amarilis needs it. So, I was not surprised to see that there was a person standing by his side, ready to change the pages of the ledger. I gulped and fluttered, worried that he would make a mistake.
Amaryllis is very professional. He made a mistake on two notes that I have heard so far, but his face remained flat, not indicating he had just played the wrong note. Matt also ignored the small mistake and continued to play.
Two different musical instruments, making different sounds, can sound harmonious. That small mistake can only be known by those who memorize the note. The ordinary music lovers will not know. Justjust wonderful. Though they never practice together, but they can move in harmony.
The atmosphere of the hall was silent for a moment as they finished. One person clapped, followed by everyone in the large room. Rumbling sounds of applause filled the hall followed by the screams of several people, making my hair bristle. Matt stood up, approached Amaryllis, then lowered their bodies toward the audience. Even fellow musician Matt clapped.
“Amarily awesome!” mama doesn't believe it. “It was a very difficult song. Matt practiced every day for a few months just to master it, the girl just chased after him without long practice.”
“Honey, do you know what this means?” ask Papa enthusiastically.
Mama looked over, then nodded meaningfully. “Papa is right too!”
I don't know what they're talking about, but I'm happy to see them happy. We're too worried. Looks like Papa and Mama wouldn't mind if I chose Amarilis to be my wife. If only, because I hadn't thought of getting there.
Amarylis is still playing with them for the next two songs. It was only in the third song, when they took a break, that Amarilis did not sit in the violinist line anymore. He was replaced by a woman I knew was one of Matt's friends. I waited for a while, but he did not also appear from the side entrance.
“Ma, I'm going for a minute,” my farewell. Mama nodded without taking her eyes off the stage, focusing on watching her youngest son play.
I was forced to interrupt the person sitting in our row to get out of the chair. In order not to disturb the line near the side door, I exited through the main door. Just bother. Where did Amarilis go? The distance between the backstage to the hall was not far, but he returned a long time ago. Just be careful if he dares to run away.
