“They (the disbelievers of Quraysh, pent.) have busied us from the prayers of wusta, (i.e.) the prayers of ashar.” [2]

If a person can keep his obligatory prayer, then he will be able to keep all forms of worship to Allah Ta’ala. [3]

‘Verily this prayer (asr prayer) was once obligated to the people before you, but they wasted it. Whoever keeps this prayer, his reward is doubled. And there is no prayer after it until the issuance of martyrdom (ie star).’” [4]

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,

...«لَنْ يَلِجَ النَّارَ أَحَدٌ صَلَّى قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ، وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا»...

Threats to People Leaving Ashar Prayers

Among the postulates that show the importance of the position of the Ashar prayer is the threat that whoever leaves it, the charitable reward he has done on that day will be removed. Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,

...مَنْ تَرَكَ صَلاَةَ الْعَصْرِ فَقَدْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ...

“Whoever leaves the Ashar prayer, then the practice is erased.” [6]

Ibnul Qoyyim rahimahullah said, “What appears from this hadith is – and Allah knows more about the purpose of His Apostle-is that what is meant by ‘leaving’ there are two conditions. First, abandon the prayer as a whole, do not perform the prayer at all. This led to the abolition of all charity. (Condition two), leaving a certain prayer on a certain day. This led to the abolition of charity on that day. The total abolition of charity is in return for leaving it altogether, and the abolition of certain charity is in return for abandoning a certain deed.” [7]

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said,

...«الَّذِي تَفُوتُهُ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ، كَأَنَّمَا وُتِرَ أَهْلَهُ وَمَالَهُ»...

“The person who missed (does not work) the ashar prayer, as if he has lost his family and property.” [8]

When a person loses his family and property, then he no longer has family and possessions. So this is a parable about the abolition of one's charity for leaving the Ashar prayer.

Threats to People Who Delay the Implementation of Ashar Prayers until the Time is Almost Over

If a person performs the ashar prayer at the end of time because he is in a certain emergency, then his prayer remains valid even though he only gets one raka’at prayer before the time runs out. Rasululullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,

...وَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ الْعَصْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ، فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الْعَصْرَ...

“Whoever finds one raka’at salat ashar before sunset, then he has got the prayer ashar.” [9]

However, the problem is when someone deliberately delays the implementation of ashar prayer until the time is empty without any specific ‘udzur allowed by syari’at. Or even this has become a daily habit because it underestimates the Ashar prayer. So this is similar to the characteristics of hypocrites mentioned by the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in his words,

...«تِلْكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِ، يَجْلِسُ يَرْقُبُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ، قَامَ فَنَقَرَهَا أَرْبَعًا، لَا يَذْكُرُ اللهَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا»...

“It is the prayer of the hypocrites, (i.e.) sitting observing the sun. Until when the sun is between the two horns of the devil (i.e., when it almost sinks, pent.), he also stands (to perform ashar prayer) four raka’at (quickly) like a chicken pat. He does not think to remember God, except just a little.” [10]
