Choking even though it looks trivial do not let us ignore it.

In our body there is a throat. Our throat has 2 channels, namely the esophagus and trachea. The esophagus (meal path) serves to insert food into the stomach. At the beginning of the trachea there is a vocal cords. When we eat or drink these vocal cords are closed which prevents food from getting into the respiratory tract. Choking is a process where food enters the wrong path, entering the trachea (breathway).

Choking is a blockage of the trachea (tangulaprok) by a foreign body, vomiting or other fluids. The symptoms of choking themselves are : 

*Cannot speak or scream

*Face turns blue due to lack of oxygen

*Suffer is suffocating

*The cough and forced breathing give rise to high-pitched sounds.

Food can enter the cavity or respiratory tract because that is the process called choking. Choking can be caused by unconsciousness or a lot of cravings while eating, such as laughing, chatting, etc. But if we choke for sure we will have a cough reflex, where this cough will remove food from the wrong path to the right path. When we choke try to drink water a little. 

However, not all food that enters the respiratory tract can reach into the lungs. When food/drink enters the lungs it can cause aspiration and is a danger. If food enters the lungs of course at that time we will be difficult to breathe

 

Choking occurs when there is a foreign body, food, or liquid that blocks the respiratory tract or airflow in the throat. To prevent the occurrence of fatal consequences, then we must understand first aid for people choking

Choking cases generally afflict infants or children because they like to insert various objects into the mouth. Whereas in adults, choking cases usually occur due to swallowing food or drinks in a hurry.

How to Do First Aid for Choking People

If it is not severe, choking may only make the sufferer feel something stuck in the throat. In this condition, we can ask the person who is choking to cough to clear the blockage in the throat. In addition, we can also ask him to vomit objects that clog his respiratory tract.

But in more severe conditions, choking can make the sufferer unable to talk or breathe and experience a condition called asphyxia. If not immediately helped, this condition can make the person lack of oxygen and loss of consciousness. If the food is in the form of fluid, aspiration pneumonia can occur and this condition can endanger the patient.

Therefore, if conditions like this we find, there are several ways first aid for people choking that we can do:

Giving a pat or punch behind the back

This way we can do by standing behind the person who is choking, then ask him to lean forward. After that, deal five blows with the heel of our hand between his two shoulder blades. Repeat until the foreign object can come out of the throat.

Perform abdominal thrusts technique

This technique is also called Heimlich maneuver, which is done by pressing the area of the heart feather firmly to remove foreign objects blockage in the throat path.

We can start by standing behind the choking person, then wrap our arms around his waist and hug him tightly. Next, clench one hand just above the heart and pull the fist tightly with the other hand, to press the heartburn as hard as possible. Do it five times, or repeat until a foreign object that is clogging can come out of the throat.

If the person cannot breathe or is unconscious, seek immediate medical help, for example by taking the patient to a nearby hospital or calling an ambulance. While waiting for medical help to come, we can try to do the CPR technique (resuscitation of the heart and lungs). But if we can't do it, look for people around who are able to perform CPR techniques to save the lives of choking victims.

Special Handling to Help a Choking Baby

How to help a choking baby is not the same as how to help a choking adult. Some of the above techniques should not be done on babies. The first thing that can be done to help a baby choke is to put the baby on his stomach on our lap, with his head lower than the body.

Hold the baby's head by holding it on both cheeks to ensure the airway is open. Give five soft but firm pats between the two baby shoulder blades while confirming whether the clogging object has come out.
