To face the Khalik let us pay attention to our clothes because included among the perfecters of prayer is to wear the best clothes, not “asal clothing”. This includes those neglected by the Muslims, many among the Muslims who neglect it, and do not pay attention at all. 

One form of prayer refinement

Prayer is a very strong relationship between a servant and his Lord. A servant stands before the Lord of the Worlds, bends to Him, reads His words, thinks to Him, and also prays to Him. Therefore, when a person establishes prayer, he should be in the best condition and the most perfect state. Sharia also outlined that a person who wants to pray must be holy body, clothing and place of prayer. As this is discussed widely in the fiqh books which specifically address this issue. 

Included among the perfecters of prayer is to wear the best clothes, not “asal clothes”. This includes those neglected by the Muslims, many among the Muslims who neglect it, and do not pay attention at all. In fact, prayer becomes a trivial matter for some Muslims, and move from worship to customary matters. 

Wear the best clothes when praying

Including among the adab that needs to be considered by people who want to pray is to wear the best clothes in all prayers, either obligatory prayers or sunnah prayers. The purpose of dressing is not just to close the aurat and then finish (enough). However, the purpose of dressing is to beautify appearance when standing before the Lord of the universe.

Allah Ta’ala says,

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

“Hi son of Adam, wear your beautiful clothes at every time (entering) the mosque. Eat and drink, and do not overdo it. Verily Allah does not like those who are superfluous.” (QS. Al-A’raf [7]: 31)

This verse is an obligation to cover the aurat by wearing clothes every time you establish prayer. Clothing is one of Allah's favors Ta’ala to His servant, because by dressing, one can close his awrah. Clothing can also enhance a person's appearance. This is not done except by wearing clean clothes. 

Ibn Kathir rahimahullah said,

ولهذه الآية، وما ورد في معناها من السنة، يستحب التجمل عند الصلاة، ولا سيما يوم الجمعة ويوم العيد، والطيب لأنه من الزينة، والسواك لأنه من تمام ذلك

“In this verse and also the proposition of As-Sunnah which is meaningful with it (contained faidah) it is recommended to beautify the appearance when praying, especially on Friday’at and holidays (day ‘id). (Also recommended) wear fragrances, because it is included in jewelry, and also siwak, because it is included in the case that perfects it.” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 3:402)

Ibn ‘Abdil Barr rahimahullah said, 

وَيَسْتَحِبُّونَ لِلْوَاحِدِ الْمُطِيقِ عَلَى الثِّيَابِ أَنْ يَتَجَمَّلَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ بِثِيَابِهِ وَطِيبِهِ وَسِوَاكِهِ

“Verily the scholars recommend for someone who has the ability to beautify his clothes according to his ability, be it related to clothes, fragrances, and also siwak.” (At-Tamhiid, 6:369)

Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Aziz bin Baaz rahimahullah said,

أمر الله سبحانه بأخذ الزينة لما فيها من ستر العورات , ولما فيها من الجمال

“Allah Ta’ala ordered to wear az-zinah(clothes), because to close the aurat and also because there is beauty.” (Majmu’ Al-Fataawa, 4:111)

Shaykh Shalih Al-Fauzan hafidzahullah said,

فأمر بأخذ الزينة لا بستر العورة فقط , مما يدل على أن المسلم ينبغي له أن يلبس أحسن ثيابه وأجملها في الصلاة للوقوف بين يدي الله تبارك وتعالى , فيكون المصلي في هذا الموقف على أكمل هيئة ظاهرا وباطنا

“Allah Ta’ala ordered to wear the best clothes, not just close the aurat only. This shows that a Muslim should wear the best and most beautiful clothes (which he has) when standing facing Allah Ta’ala. So that people who pray in these conditions are in the most perfect state, both inborn and inward.” 

Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said when asked about someone who likes to dress and wear nice slippers,

“Surely Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. That arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling man.” (CHR. Muslims no. 91)

Syaukani rahimahullah said,

والحديث أيضا يدل على أن محبة لبس الثوب الحسن والنعل الحسن وتخير اللباس الجميل ليس من الكبر في شيء، وهذا مما لا خلاف فيه فيما أعلم

“Hadits this shows his love to wear nice clothes and sandals (beautiful). Choosing to wear good clothes is not included in the slightest arrogance. This includes things I know there are no khilaf in them .. “ (Nailul Authar, 2:124)

Watch your clothes when praying

Some people who pray do not pay attention to this. They pray in the condition of wearing clothes that contain dirt (although not unclean) or smells that disturb the pilgrims around it. For example, wearing clothes that are dirty and never cleaned (washed). He does not try to replace it, but has the ability. Or deliberately wear clothes that have been a lot of holes, even though it has other clothes that are more worthy. 

Whereas when he wants to face a person who has a high position in the world, he will not wear clothes with such a model. However, he must have chosen and searched for the nicest clothes he had, and wore fragrances with the best fragrances he had. How could one be so considerate when going to face a creature, yet not have the attention when facing the Khaliq. This is one sign when someone has underestimated the matter of prayer.

Dillah and the papi also went to the mosque to pray Dzuhur congregation.

Since the papi returned to the path of Allah, whatever busy the papi still took the time to perform congregational prayers.
