In the cultures of the humanoid societies of North and West Laurentia, the influence of patriarchy was strong and obvious. From the Empire of Iscaria, the Gredonian Empire, even to the Kingdom of Artchania was very prioritizing male dominance over everything. One of the results of patriarchal culture is the creation of the Principle of Title rules for nobles and royalty.
All patriarchal states including the Kingdom of Artchania respect the Principle of Title. In this rule, there are 4 important terms that govern the titles of the lords and royalty, namely Suo*Jure, Jure Uxoris, Jure Matris, and Consort**.
1) Suo Jure is a title in its own name which means obtained through the inheritance of a title from the family (Ascribed Status) not because of the marriage bond. For men who get titles through suo jure is often considered more gentle than men who get titles through Jure Uxoris or Consort (Titles obtained through marriage).
In real life, an example of a suo jure is the title of Queen belonging to Monarch Elizabeth II acquired through the inheritance of her father, King George IV.
2) Jure Uxoris is a term used for men who receive a title through marriage. For example, a duke bequeathed the title to his only child who was a woman. So the duke's son will inherit the duchess title which he can suo jure (inheritance). Then the duchess married a man who initially did not have any title. After marriage, the husband of the duchess will get the title of duke which he obtained through marriage, not through inheritance. This is called Jure Uxoris.
Jure Uxoris requires that all rights and personal property of the wife be melted down and be in the name of the husband. That is, the husband has the right to manage his wife's personal property even if the wife does not agree. It is quite annoying indeed, when a wife gets the title, land, and property that she got from her late parents then all was snatched by her husband in the name of patriarchy.
3) Jure Matris is the term used when the mother bequeaths the title to the child. Well, back again in the case of Jure Uxoris, if for example the duchess (Suo Jure) and Duke (Jure Uxoris) had children, then suddenly the husband (duke) died, then suddenly, so the wife (duchess) who got the title through suo jure is entitled to bequeath the title, property, and all of it to the child without the consent of the husband.
4)Consort (consort) is a condition where the holder of the title gets his title through marriage. This is different from Jure Uxoris because the consort is more directed to women, while Jure Uxoris only applies to men. But actually consort is not only applicable to women, men can also bear the status of consort.
The story of why consort occurs in men begins when in the past in the Gredonian Empire where the emperor did not have a son but still had a daughter. Now automatically donk the emperor must pass on his title to his daughter. Unfortunately, when the child has received the title of empress and then he married, conflict occurs.
- The second conflict was when the naming of the child, because the Empire adheres to patriarchy, automatic granting of child surnames will follow the surname of the father (patrilineal) so that the condition causes the imperial family tree to be cut off and replaced by a foreign family (family of husband). As a result there was a change of house (dynasties) in the Gredonian Empire at that time.
Realizing that patriarchy can be a double-edged knife, it was decided at that time in the Gredonian Empire that:
"A male monarch who gets the right, title, and property suo jure entitled to appoint his wife as a monarch woman with consort status. Where all rights, titles, and property of the woman are melted in the name of the husband.
*Then a female Monarch who gets the right, title, and property suo jure not entitled to appoint her husband as a monarch man but raised him as a consort status so that all rights, titles, property, property, and plus the granting of a family name to the child is on the personal name of the monarch woman without the intervention of the husband (consort)."*
This was a revolution in the order of society especially the nobility. Even more revolutionary the term male consort, many families of commoners who do not have sons then marry their children to men with the man as a consort status.
This is why a man with consort status will be looked down upon by the public as he lives under the domination of his wife.
Since then in the Kingdom of Gredonia and the entire country of West Laurentia has removed the concept of Jure Uxoris and replaced it as a male consort. But for Northern Laurentian states such as the Iscarian Empire, the concept of Jure Uxoris is still alive today.
Oh yes, for his estate in the world, you can see for example when Prince Albert who is the husband of Queen Victoria who did not get the title 'king' but only got prince consort (prince companion). Or like Prince Philip who is the husband of Queen Elizabeth II who did not get the title 'king' but only got the title 'duke' by Queen Elizabeth II who Assigned Status.
