...CHAPTRE 9...
...THEIR CALL'S...
"I got a new report. Rosie's. The boy was friends with the Jenkins family's son."
Daniel. He leaned against the barista table while smoking. His eyes looked at the quiet cafe. There were no regular customers or two other employees. All he has is himself with the guy on his phone right now
"[What do you mean?]"
The man's voice sounded calm, but Daniel could guess there was a worried tone in the man's sentence tucked away. "I'm sure you heard exactly as I said." Daniel pressed the tip of his cigarette against the ashtray surface, turning off a small, slow-moving fire at the end.
He got up from where he stood, slowly stepping towards the window before closing the curtains dangling on each side, allowing darkness to instantly surround him.
The man glanced at the owl-shaped wall clock that showed at 03:30 pm, which meant that the twins, Rosaline and Reagan, would soon be coming home from their campus.
"[So right? Rosie's got something to do with the golden money?]"
Daniel did not answer. He massaged his temple before his hand took out a new cigarette from his pocket.
"If you want me to conclude it that way, then, yes! That kid's got a relationship with the golden money now."
A small flame alighted and slowly burned the tip of Daniel's cigarette after he lit his match. The man casually smoked his cigarette and exhaled his smoke into the air. It doesn't matter if the smoke will surround the cafe.
"[The world is very narrow.]"
Daniel chuckled in response to the man on his phone. He glanced back at the owl's wall clock once more, before sitting comfortably on the barista's table.
"[In your opinion... Should I come to England too? I'm afraid this is turning out of control.]"
Daniel smoked his cigarette once and exhaled his smoke. "For what? Watching them too? You didn't forget, did you, I'm here, Julian? You asked me for that yourself."
Julian. As Daniel called the man on his phone, it was silent. There was a long pause and silence between them, to the extent that Daniel could hear the sound of mosquitoes buzzing around his ears.
"[I know, but I just.]"
Again. The old pause came back again and made Daniel sigh resignedly. He could even guess what Julian wanted to say without the man continuing his words just now.
'I worry' that's what Julian wants to say but his ego is too high. Making those sincere words get stuck at the end of his throat and making the man too proud to say it.
"I know you're worried because Rosie has a relationship with the golden money, which means her parents truly nightmare. But I'm sure their friendship won't last long.
"As soon as Rosie knew how Jenkins' true character was she was bound to leave him," Daniel said, hoping that his long words could alleviate Julian's concerns, even if only a little.
"[Then do you think that Jenkins would let Rosie off so easily? The fruit fell not far from the tree, Daniel! The cruel character of his parents must have decreased in his son as well!]"
Daniel almost cursed when he felt his heart pound faster than usual. Not the beatings of something romantic, but the beatings as nervousness and trembling scooped all over his body, making his eyes move restlessly to the right and to the left.
Blame Julian's words just now that instantly made him think negatively.
Daniel involuntarily gulped his saliva nervously. He put his cigarette back in the ashtray and said, "y-yeah if that happens, he's there to handle it. He can protect them both there."
"['There' I don't mean the University of Westminster, Daniel! But the whole of England! If only one university sees them like that, I'm sure Rosie and Reggie can handle it. But not the whole of England.]"
Hearing Julian's words just now, Daniel gasped. She even lost the urge to smoke her cigarette again. His head was busy looking for the right sentence to say in response to Julian.
Nil. There is no proper word for him to say now. Because his mind was already dissolved and enveloped in his own negative thoughts.
"I know what you mean, but don't worry. Like I said, their friendship won't last long."
"[How can you be so sure? You can't predict the future, Daniel.]"
"This is not a prediction, but a man's intuition."
"[Usually the man's intuition is always wrong.]"
"Oh, shut up! Trust me this time, Julian! They're safe here! I won't let those lunatics touch them again!"
When the door connecting his home with the cafe opened, Daniel gasped. He widened wide when he found Rosaline and Reagan standing in front of him with a confused expression.
"Should that be your voice, Daniel?" Reagan asked. His forehead shriveled and he stared at Daniel intensely, as if probing the man.
"Who are you calling, Dan? To the point that you scream like that?" Rosaline asked. With a worried look still clearly on his face he walked up to Daniel and continued, "you know your voice is coming out."
The man smiled blandly. He turned off his phone and ruffled his waist and let out a long sigh, not nervous, but more tired. "Only a shitty cafe supleyer" she lied.
He massaged his forehead, pretending to look dizzy, but in his heart he wondered if the two twins had heard his conversation with Julian on the phone. May the Goddess Fortuna be with him. Let's hope they didn't hear the chat with Julian just now.
"Supleyer cafe? Why?" This time Reagan asked.
There was a sigh of relief when both of them managed to lie with his bland smile. With a dramatic look on his face he said, "Well, they're really annoying. I told them to send the goods today but they sent them tomorrow."
"By the way about the cafe, why didn't you open it today?" Rosaline asked curiously, "i saw a lot of customers up ahead who looked confused when your cafe closed. You don't usually close the cafe. What's up?"
"Ah about that.I intend to take you to Westgate today."
"Westgate?"
"Yes, I'll buy you new clothes."
"Something wrong with our clothes?" Chirps Reagan slightly frowned watching the clothes he was wearing along with the clothes Rosaline was wearing as well.
"none. It's just that your clothes are too old-fashioned, and I'm sure you're contracting the lowly tastes Julian has. I'm honestly a fashionista. So today we're going shopping."
With a body that is still tired because it just came home from college. Rosaline and Reagan resigned as the man pulled them into his car and headed straight for Oxford.
