A few hours later, Vania wakes up. She feels bad. He wanted to sleep well, at least it could help him to get through the day. He breathed and got up. After the shower, he went to the children's room. They weren't in their beds, so she walked into Bram's room. Surprisingly, he was sound asleep. He shook it hard.
"Mmm?" He's moving.
"Bram, where are the kids?" Voice's up.
"In their bed."
"No, they don't exist. Where are they?" His heart started to beat fast, he was getting scared.
"What do you mean they're not in their beds?" Bram got up quickly. They ran to the children's room and Bram saw that the babies were not in their beds. He ran down. "Van! You better get down and see this."
"What the hell is going on?" He ran down and then stopped. His hand reached into his mouth. He could not believe what he saw.
"Hey, honey." Vania looked at Frans holding her baby. Tears began to flow in his eyes. Bram takes Alice and Frans puts Alan in his chair. Frans walked closer to her.
"You-you-" He can barely talk.
"returned? Yeah." yeah." Frans smiled.
"But how is it possible?"
"I finished the job faster." He took her hand and pulled her towards him and hugged her tightly.
"I miss you so much." He felt the tears of the woman on his shirt.
"I miss you too." They hugged for a while and then took the children to their beds and walked to their rooms. They lay together. Frans wrapped his arms around Valnia's waist tightly.
"I've been wanting to do this for a long time."
"Don't leave me, Frans. Not anymore." He put his hand on his cheek.
"I promise, I'm not going anywhere. The only thing I want is for you to be in my arms." Frans kissed her cheeks and they fell asleep in each other's arms. Vania and Frans were finally happy.
Vania woke up with a big smile on her face. He turned to look at Frans, but Frans was not next to him. Maybe he went to the children's room, he thought. He got up and went to the children's room. Nothing and only the children slept well, so he went down to the kitchen. Frans was not there either. Where's she? He ran to Bram's room. He also slept well.
“Bram! Bram!" Voice weak. He shook it harder.
"What-what's going on?" Bram woke up quickly.
"Did you see Frans?"
"What are you talking about, Van?" He rubbed his hair.
"He's here, remember. Where'd he go?" He started looking around like a crazy woman.
"Van, Frans isn't here." He got up, and began to comfort him.
"Where's he going?" Bram was about to answer but the doorbell rang.
"Maybe it's him." He smiled and ran down.
Vania ran down like a child. Vania thinks it's Frans who's behind the door. Bram was right behind him. He doesn't know what's going on. Vania finally reached the door. He began to get excited; he grabbed the doorknob with a smile. The door opened and his smile fell as he looked at who it was. He didn't know the man, but it was definitely not Frans.
"Are you Mrs Frans?"
"Yes, right, what's up?"
"Good morning ma'am, my name is Lieutenant William-"
"So you're the famous lieutenant who called my husband?" He folded his hands to his chest.
"Yes, it's me. It's nice to meet you."
"yeah. Is there anything I can help you with?”
"I'm here to talk to you about your husband, Frans." He took off his beret.
"Why? Is everything okay?" His eyebrows rose and his heart began to beat fast.
"I'm sorry I had to tell you this; your husband is dead. He was killed in his mission. He was a great soldier. I want to come here personally because I really appreciate it ..." Vania didn't listen to anything she said afterwards.
Her husband, the love of his life is not breathing anymore. He just stood there, his hand tightly holding onto the doorknob. Memories, that's all in his head. All the moments he had with him, all the memories he had now were just memories. Then he thought about his family. What would the twins do without their father? Tears were flowing down his face.
"There's a letter he wrote for you." Vania looked at the letter in her hand. With all his strength, he took the letter. "I'm really sorry for your loss. Frans is a great soldier and I know he's a great man." The lieutenant nodded and walked away.
Bram watched Vania as he looked at the letter covered with tears streaming down his face. He wiped the tears off his face and hugged her tightly. Then the screams came. She starts crying hysterically and Bram hugs her tightly. Tears did not stop flowing on his face.
"He can't leave! He can't! Need it! He should be here, with us! Why are you leaving?" Bram held it tighter. Vania closed the door with her feet and they stood there, hugging each other.
"What would I do without him? My life is incomplete without it! He's not leaving." The kids started crying. They let go of her grief, and Vania goes upstairs to retrieve it, but Bram stops her.
"Let me take it." His voice trembled and his eyes were red, but he had to be strong for the sake of Vania. She tried to smile for him, but couldn't. Bram ran upstairs to the children's room. With all her strength, Vania walked to the sofa and sat down. He stared at the letter on his lap, tears still streaming down his face. After looking at the letter a little longer, he picked it up and started opening it. He opened the paper and saw Frans' beautiful handwriting. Then he started reading it.
Dear vania,
They told me to write this letter and send it to you if I die. It's really a waste of time for me because I know I'm going to come back to you and be with you. But I have to follow orders and be a good soldier. Well, the first thing I want to say is stop crying, I know it's really hard for you to open this. Now, Vania, I want you to know that you're the most beautiful thing that's ever been in my life. You are beautiful and perfect in every way. I don't know how you can marry a man like me. I definitely don't deserve to be with a warm and kind person like you. You're with me every step of the way I've been here for a few months and I miss you more and more every day. I miss my mother, our children and Bram. But I just want you in my arms. Don't tell them I said that. Bram's gonna talk dirty and mom's gonna be jealous. Loved them. Oh, and I have a secret, I'll tell you, I want to ask you to remarry me when I get back. I want you to be known to people that you're mine, forever. I want to have a small family with you as well with the kids in the big house. Caring for a cat, which I still have not decided on its name. I want to have a daughter; I want her to be my little princess just like you are my queen. And boy, I want a boy because he can protect his sister at all times. I'm going to be the best dad we've ever had, unlike the dad we have. I pledge. I can't wait to see you, baby. I don't know what I was thinking, leaving you all this time. By the way, I think I know now what you were afraid of when I told you something in my room that night, why did you really stop accepting my presence, when you fell in love with me, actually I was so scared to fix it because I love you too and I was so afraid to admit it. We're so stupid. Looking back it will make you think why we should be so afraid, we both love each other but only fear. Yeah but now I'm not scared anymore. I want you and I love you. When I get back, I'll never leave again. All I want now is to be at home with you guys and be in love and happy with you. God, I miss you. But, Van, if you end up reading this letter and I actually leave, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I didn't do my best. Sorry I let you down. I promise to come back to you, and if you don't, I'm sorry. But, I don't want you to cry for me, I want you to go out there and be happy. I want you to find a new love again. Out there, I know that. The whole world is waiting for you. I will always be in your heart, always. And I will always watch over you, protect you. You will always be everything to me, always. Even though I'm no longer around, I don't want you to cry and not move on with your life. I don't want to be the cause. You are a beautiful woman who deserves the best the world can give. I will forgive you if you have to fall in love with someone else; all I want is for you to be happy. I love you, Vania. I will always love you. You will always be the most beautiful thing I have ever had. I'll miss everything about you. I can still see you from above. Tell the kids and Bram I love them. You guys are the best people I've ever had. Thank you for always being there for me. I will always love you.
I always loved you, though,
Frans.
Vania's tears landed on that piece of paper. He kissed the letter.
"I'll always love you, Frans. Always." Vania managed to say it.
