"Oh.. God, did something happen? How can the face you saw yesterday be okay now filled with wounds?"
Mother's words made me and Arthur stop our footsteps towards the dining room. There was already a mother and William, just the two of them. I didn't even see the cutlery at the table where Dad used to eat his food. I'm sure something worse happened last night and made Dad leave the house. I wondered what reason he gave to my mother when he left home.
What is the reason for the job? Or did you not even say anything?
Arthur pulled my body towards him, making me lean against the wall. For now, hiding the truth is what Arthur and I have to do. We had to pretend we didn't know anything in front of William. William, who was trying to endure it all by himself, we both decided we would respect him and would certainly accept his anger when he found out that we both knew what was really going on.
"I'm sorry, William."
"..."
"I'm sorry, William."
"What's up, honey? Something bad happened? Did William have a nightmare last night?"
"I'm sorry, William."
"William, don't scare Mom. Do you have nightmares?"
"William hoped it was all a nightmare."
"See, Mother? What the hell's going on? No, we treated the wounds on your face first."
"I'm sorry William couldn't protect Mom" she said in tears.
William's words stopped both my mother's footsteps and my and Arthur's footsteps. A person who had never divided his wounds ended up dropping his tears. A person who never wanted to show his weakness finally showed his own wounds. A person who always does everything by himself finally falls into the arms of mother.
I guess the pain I feel won't match the pain my mother has felt during her married life and I know it's the truth. I don't think there will be a single person who can match the pain you have received and felt but I was wrong. Who would have thought the first child to come out of the mother's womb to feel such a great pain may even be greater than the pain I have felt and could be equal to the pain that the mother feel it. Who would have thought this man who was thought to have no compassion still had the softest place in his heart for mother?
"Honey, I know you won't tell Mom anything but I ask that you don't hurt yourself. William has protected Mom very well. William is the second superhero after the grandfather in Mom's life. William did a very good job as a mother's son. So, don't even say William can't protect Mom. Protecting this family is like protecting Mom, Will."
William's cry broke in Mom's arms. The first embrace that calmed her cries as she was born into the world and the first hug that made her let out her cries as she knew the true meaning of her world. I know more and more how selfish I am when my two brothers put more love for family than love for the opposite sex and I never prioritize my family. I'm really selfish and stupid.
"Whatever happens, I'll always be here for you, baby."
What will William do when he finds out that mom already knows all the truth about dad?
Would the pain he would feel be doubled?
Does the pain she will feel exceed the pain she will feel?
And, will he hate you?
