Arriving at the office, Valerie understands the views of the people around Brian. The company employees nodded and smiled politely at Brian, but began to be venomous after being passed by the man.
Valerie snorted in annoyance, why are these people?
Arriving in his room, Max had arrived early. He was busy in front of the laptop screen.
"Boss, have you seen ...."
"Infidelity is not a problem. I don't care" Brian replied expressionlessly. Despite saying such a thing, Brian must have been feeling anxious.
"Our stock is declining. You know all about you will be very influential" Max continued.
"You take care of everything, we'll have an emergency meeting if by this afternoon the decline gets sharper."
"Good."
Max out of the room. Once the gossip is spread, he must make sure all internet sites that contain the news are blocked. Max also asked the television that broadcast the news to be stopped.
All the news about Brian had a huge influence on the company. Whatever the man did and all the gossip about him always made a big change in the stock price.
"Make sure all media making fake news is blocked. Make calculations on them!" max yells at someone over the phone.
For half a day Brian spent indoors with a myriad of jobs in front of laptop screens as well as documents. Valerie continued to be near the man. Several times Valerie offered mineral water but Brian did not touch it at all.
"You want to eat?" ask Brian suddenly. Valerie did not pay attention to the time, apparently it was twelve noon and it was time for office rest hours.
"Hmm, sure." Valerie nodded.
Brian walked first leaving the room, while Valerie was behind him.
"I'll find another seat" Valerie said as they arrived at the cafeteria.
"Max is busy, he must be eating out. You can eat here, accompany me" Brian asked.
"Ah, yes." Valerie agrees.
They sat down and waited for the food to come. Without ordering, the chefs and waiters always provide lunch according to the schedule that Brian has set.
Valerie and Brian are sitting together, making them the main spotlight as well as the center of attention of every pair of eyes in the canteen.
Brian seemed indifferent and ordinary, while Valerie felt uncomfortable.
When Brian's meal came, Valerie just ordered lunch as she wanted.
"You can eat first" Valerie said. He was worried that Brian's food would get cold if he had to wait for his food to come.
"It's okay, we're eating together. Don't you like meat steaks like this?" ask Brian.
"I've never tried it. The tuna here tastes better."
"Don't eat," Valerie refused with a smile.
"You should try all the menus in this place. I guarantee all the food flavors here are up to nutrition and health standards. It might match your taste."
"You make this company so cool. The canteen is like a restaurant in a five-star hotel. You're overindulging your employees" Valerie joked.
"They're the best investments, the ones that worked on me so I could make a lot of money. So it's appropriate that they get adequate facilities" explained Brian.
They chatted a lot while waiting for Valerie's food to come. Despite the skewed gossip that clearly came from his own employees, Brian seemed not to be angry at all. He was still calm in the midst of people's gazes and the prejudices of his employees.
After the food arrived, the two enjoyed what was in front of each of them.
"You like this place? You comfortable working for me?" brian asked after they both finished eating.
"Hmm, this is a comfortable place to work."
"You can work for me whenever you want. Didn't I offer you a great salary and the easiest job?"
"I doubt you really need me" Valerie replied. Brian just smiled a little in response.
As the lunch break came to an end, Brian and Valerie left the cafeteria and were about to return to the study.
Along the way, Valerie found a lot of employees whispering impolitely. From janitors to women who just came out of the canteen, they behaved as if they did not respect the privacy of their superiors. Valerie's pretty upset, but Brian doesn't care.
"Are you okay?" valerie asked as the two of them were in the elevator.
"Why?" Brian asked back.
"Your employees, they're not polite!"
"Leave it. I don't have to worry about them. Just let people be prejudiced, I don't care" Brian said.
Valerie was getting curious, she wanted to ask him directly to make sure but worried that Brian was offended.
"But ... is gossip ...." Valerie finally made a sound with the little courage she gathered.
Brian was silent for a few seconds. Then quickly the man turned around, standing right in front of Valerie.
"You want to know the truth?" ask Brian. Valerie blinked quickly and nodded.
Not a sentence Brian gave in response, but something that made Valerie almost lose her mind.
The man approached Valerie, getting closer to Valerie's back touching the elevator wall.
Valerie breathes fast, she's scared, she's nervous.
