Shoutu Shofiiril Bulbuli: The Epic Story of al-Imam al-Ashmu’i and Caliph Abi Jakfar al-Manshur
There is a unique story that happened during the time of the Abbasid Caliphate. The second Caliph of the Abbasids, Caliph Abu Jakfar al-Manshur was a scholar of art and literature, especially of shiers and poets. Evidence of the Caliph's appreciation of the shiris is to hold a competition or a competition and read the syiir. The prize is also unmitigated, namely gold as heavy as the pedestal on which the shier is written. However, to win the race is not easy, the Caliph requires that the created shier not be in the form of footage and has never been heard by anyone before. It became even more difficult because it turned out that the Caliph had prepared a ruse so that no one could win the race.
Caliph Abu Jakfar al-Manshur was very intelligent and could remember something he had heard. The Caliph also had a Ghulam (male servant) who could remember what he had heard twice. While Jariyah/his female servant was also able to remember what he had heard three times.
One day, a poet came to meet the challenge of the caliph to the palace. The Caliph invited him to come in to read to his shiers in front of the Caliph. “Revelation, Caliph, I have composed a long and beautiful syir.” Said the poet. The Caliph said, “Good, then read it to me.” The poet then read the syiir to completion. However, after the syiir was finished reading, the Caliph said, “I've heard the syiir. It was the shier Fulan bin fulan, You have lied to me. The Caliph then recites the syiir that the poet has read to completion. Exactly. There's nothing different. Poets deny, but the caliph does not lose sight of the ruse. The Caliph called Ghulam and his fingers who had been hiding somewhere from the beginning. Ghulam later recited also the shirder that the poet had read. Not yet half-shiir, the caliph stopped the recitation. The Caliph then had his fingers recite. This was done by the caliph to convince the poet that his shier had existed before. Poets come home empty-handed. The Caliph laughed because his deception was deceptive.
The poet who came home had finally reported the incident to the council of poets who were gathering in the middle of the market. Al-Asmu’i, a multilatenta scholar who is very skilled in the field of language and literature, who happened to pass in the middle of the market, then joined in hearing complaints from the poet. Al-ashmu’i then told the poets that it happened because there was indeed a ruse played by the caliph. Upon hearing this, al-Asmu’i became challenged to come to the palace, defeating the caliph's mischievous trickery.
The appointed day had arrived, al-Asmui came to the palace, but disguised himself in the clothes and style of a bedouin, as well as a veil covering part of his face. As had happened before, the caliph then told al-Asmu’i to start reciting his shir. Below is a complete transcript of the lyrics:
