I walked after Emily who was in front of me, passing through many trees in the dark of the night. The half moon was seen shining brightly among the lush trees around us.
I moved my hand a few times to get rid of the tree branch that stuck out and had a chance to scratch the faint of my arm that was not covered in Chloe's borrowed shirt. Emily who was in front of me still continued to walk steadily regardless of the branches that continued to scratch her.
"Em, where are we going?" I finally got to after a while.
Emily seemed to care nothing at all about the curiosity that was eating away at me and gave me no clue where we were going.
"Patience, Ally" he said without looking at me. "We're here soon."
I sighed softly, inevitably continuing to follow him on his way deeper into the forest. As I walked, I watched my surroundings with my forehead shriveling, inexplicably feeling a strange air covering this forest and a faint mist floating between us. I raised one of my hands to feel it but felt nothing but empty air.
Emily kept walking in front of me until she stopped and turned to me.
"Sorry, I can only get you here, Ally," he said, sounding sorry. "There will be someone else waiting for you at the crossroads."
"Who?" I frowned confusedly.
"Later you'll know. Just follow the path, okay?"
I was silent for a while and then nodded. Emily patted me on the shoulder excitedly before finally letting me step foot down the path that seemed to have long formed under me.
For a while I continued to walk along the path, looking around for signs of others and listening to the sounds of cramping among the bushes swaying from the small animals passing around me.
I stopped my steps when I found a guy leaning against one of the trees, his hands folded on his chest and his head drooping behind me so I could not see his face. I slowly walked back to get closer to the figure, stopped after getting close enough to him and could see his face as clearly as possible.
Dave. His eyes were tightly shut and I could see his shoulders moving faintly along with his breathing blowing. She's asleep.
I was silent for a few moments to notice his peaceful-looking face from falling asleep, not a cold, stiff impression I had caught when he confronted Will and me, nor the awkward impression when we chatted earlier. His eyes were shaded by a pair of thick eyebrows, a pair of thin lips that were clenched and a fairly smooth face with faint feathers around his chin.
"You just arrived?"
I froze in shock when those words suddenly came out of his mouth even though he still hadn't opened his eyes that were twitching faintly from behind his eyelids.
"Yes, have you been waiting a long time?" I immediately took a few steps back from him.
Dave finally opened his eyes and turned his gaze towards me at a glance before pointing it back to the front. "Not long. Come on, let's go."
"Where are we going?" I asked as I followed him walking.
"Chloe told me to accompany you to an important place you haven't been able to go."
"What place?"
He glanced at me with a longer pause, hesitated to say it, but finally said it too. "Your parents' house."
"Home ... my parents?" I was at a loss for words.
"Yes," he replied. "The place we were together before was moving."
"For what?" ask me while squeezing the end of my shirt. "Don't you say that all the houses of our group have been destroyed?"
Dave shaking. "Your parents' house is the only survivor of the destruction."
I frowned, her words did not match what they were telling me when we first gathered. "Why are you lying?"
"Be careful," he said. "The secret is always locked up for every member of our remaining group, outsiders should never know."
"Will?"
Dave nodded without saying anything more.
I continued to follow him until I arrived next to the house that looked almost the same as our herd headquarters. Dave reached into his pants pocket to pick up the key and turned the door knob that was already open.
The room full of dust immediately greeted our arrival, I coughed a few times to release the shred of dust that was accidentally inhaled and rubbed it with my hands.
"Wear this," said Dave holding out a handkerchief to me, one of his hands was seen covering his nose with another handkerchief at the time.
Dave shaking. "The elder always forbade us to come here. Only the owner of this house can enter, we can only find out the floor plan of his house through the records they left behind.
"That's it...."
"Sorry we can't take care of this house for you."
I looked at her in surprise, only able to see the back of her head because she did not turn her head, but could hear her guilty feelings. "It's not your fault, I'm just asking."
Dave did not answer and simply headed back up to the top floor, toward the door of the first room we saw from the stairs. He opened the door again and stepped aside to give me the way first.
"Your parents' room."
I nodded my head understandingly and walked into the room. Automatically my eyes look around the room and stop at a frame in the face down position.
I walked up to the frame and flipped it over, rubbing my hand on the surface in one swipe to see the photo inside. The photo of a couple standing side by side with a child in a sling, their shirt is the same as the photo in my necklace.
I felt Dave approaching me and standing next to me, his gaze watching the frame in my grasp without saying anything. I gently swiped the photo for a while before finally putting it back down and taking my eyes off. I can't cry here.
"So, what's our goal?" I stared at him.
He shrugged his shoulders. "I was just told to drive you."
I looked at him not believing.
"I'm not lying."
I'm speechless. "There's nothing we have to do here?"
"Nothing."
I shook my head and started walking out of my parents' room. No matter what the state of the house is right now, there must be something I can get from here. I looked down the second-floor hallway and noticed two other rooms located a few steps away from my parents' room.
The first door looks like a children's room. I opened it, and sure enough, there was a baby bed and hanging toys, a toy box and a wardrobe and a stroller for the baby inside. Various very faint memories flashed through my mind, but I tried to ignore them. I immediately closed the door again and walked to the next room.
I opened the door of the second room and stepped in, looking at the sizable table in the middle of the room, a closet with several books and dossier-looking files and an old model swivel chair. I got closer to the table then immediately opened the drawer and began to disassemble.
There are some fairly thick dusty brown maps with ropes that tie into one, yellowed papers and some small boxes located in the top pile there. I reached into my pants pocket to pick up a handkerchief and patted it on the objects to remove the dust attached.
My eyes immediately flashed with handwriting that looked like engraving on top of the brown map and then looked at the page instead to find other writings that stated all the information we might need.
"Dave, take a look at this" I said without looking back at him. "I found something."
In silence Dave immediately stepped closer and supported on the table to attend to the contents of the brown map that began to scatter out. He went to sort through the paper with me and skimmed through the writing that was there.
[.... Signed, Thomas Graymark.]
It was the last sentence of the remaining sheet that came from the brown map. I couldn't help but smile happily as I looked at Dave.
"What do you think?" I asked her slowly.
"Good.." he slowly turned his head towards me with faint glittering eyes. "It's so good, we have to get her home."
"Everything?" I stared at the spread of paper on the table.
Dave shaking. "No, we've got some we can take with us."
"All right."
He seemed to be silent for a while to stare at the set of papers then went back to sorting through the paper and began to split it into two groups: one: one into a brown map and another into a piece of rope to hold together the papers they would carry. Several yellowed sheets of paper and small boxes also took part in the selection.
When I finished I put the chocolate map in the drawer and cleaned the rest of the stuff into place. Dave seemed busy tying the selected sheet of paper and handed it to me.
"Here you go, let's go back."
I nodded in agreement and followed him out of my parents' house.
