Ashqar drove his car at moderate speed, splitting the congested streets of Solo City after the magrib. Just like the atmosphere outside, the situation in his car was noisy, by Zain's chatter.
Steering wheel control is within the power of Ashqar, he ensures the distance with the car in front of him in a safe position and then looks back. The place where his wife and two sons sat, in the middle seat, left himself behind the wheel. Like a private driver.
His two sons, in different ways, forced to sit with Sapphira. And of course the front seat next to the driver will not fit all three at once, while none of Alvin or Zain will budge to sit in the front seat.
Ashqar glanced back from the central rearview, his concentration slightly split between the street and Safira's face. A wide smile and a shady gaze again adorned the face of his beloved woman. Safira even laughed a few times off hearing and seeing how Zain expressed his joy.
The son excitedly told me about the experience of going with Rahma to Jogja and from some places that the boy visited, only when recounting the large swimming pool at the hotel did Zain stay the most excited.
“Continue ‘kan, Mah. Zain jumped, byur! The water splashed everywhere.” Zain spread his arms wide and leaned over, looking at Alvin who was sitting on the other side of Sapphira. “Iya, ‘kan Mas Alvin?”
“Iya.”
Zain scowled at Alvin's short answer. “Kok, only yes doang.”
“You're noisy, Mom can't sleep. Mommy is sick again so have a lot of rest.”
Zain's fierce gaze slowly faded, the sparkle in his bead dimming. “Zain disturb Mom, yes?” he said with a gaze that made Safira's heart feel unbearable.
However, Safira did not deny it, Ashqar first voiced.
“Ngak, kok.” Ashqar interrupted, his gaze focused on the streets. “It's just noisy said Mas Alvin. Yes ‘kan, Mas?”
Alvin nodded in agreement then while folding his hands on his chest, he looked at Zain straight. “You've told me about the pool three times since, so mending now you shut up and justin Mamah sleep. Mamah bosen ngedengerin your story.”
After saying that Alvin pulled away, sitting leaned back while closing his eyes. Alvin's face which is usually minimal expression this time is different, irritated writhing in each strand of his furrowed eyebrows.
“Mamah bosen? Don't you want to hear Zain's story? Bener, Mah?” cecar Zain panicked.
“But Papah bosen.”
Ashqar's remarks attracted the attention of Safira and Zain, minus Alvin, both of whom glanced at Ashqar.
“Let's go to bed with Mamah, yeah?” zain said, ignoring Ashqar.
And it was not the first or second, but the fourth time Ashqar had been ignored by Zain since this afternoon. Ashqar conjectured that Zain's indifference was a form of child protest because he had previously asked Alvin and Zain to go home with Sari. However, both of them balked, especially Zain.
“There are still angry with papah, nih?” The car that Ashqar then stopped slowly as the traffic light in front of him turned red. Then he turned back, reached out and ruffled Zain's mane. “Anged continue to rage, his son papah.”
Zain shook Ashqar's hand and hugged Sapphira. “Zain not bolo same Papah!”
