The journey from the bus stop to the Arana apartment takes five minutes on foot. But the road that must be taken passes through a narrow alley with a slightly dim lighting of one light that often flashes. For those who are not used to it will assume that the environment is really scary, but for Arana who has been living there for almost seven years, the environment is normal for Arana.
Passing the last turn, Arana sets foot in front of the stairs of an old and seemingly simple apartment. Even in some ways, the apartment does not seem enough to be simple.
The stairs as wide as adults were the only access in and out of the apartment building occupants. When two or more people are about to go up and down, one of them has to give up giving way. Unfortunately, the people here are not people who are friendly and kindly give up. Cheques and fights have often occurred only because of building access.
The walls of the apartment have some weathered posters attached. Either a brochure, an advertisement or just simple pictures. Not infrequently find dry gum attached to the wall. The kids in this neighborhood are so ignorant. Arana herself is not infrequently exposed to their ignorance. Like the dirty front floor of his apartment. Door crossed. A broken window, and so on.
"*Damn!! How dare you bring your affair into my house! Go to basic ba*ingan*!!"
"ah! Shut your mouth, you chatty bastard!"
"You dare yell at me? Huh?!!"
From one door beside the door of his apartment, there was an echoing cry that could even be heard up to the lower floor. Arana's fellow third-floor neighbors were absolutely never able to stop their screaming and squabbling noises. Almost every day, it becomes Arana's daily food. This environment is actually not safe enough and worthy to live in, but there are many things that Arana considers to stay in this place.
The first, because the rent costs are below the average price of apartment rentals usually. Arana clearly knows because the facilities in the apartment she lives in are not as complete as other apartment facilities.
Power outages often occur, and sometimes because the waterways are disrupted, Arana must ride a bath in a public bath on the lower floor. But just to bathe there, Arana must be willing to queue long and not infrequently can only take a bath less than ten minutes because of the insistence of others.
The second, because this apartment is the closest of all places to work.
Arana does have quite a lot of work she does every day. From Monday to Friday in the morning until noon, Arana has a job at a supermarket as a cashier. From day to night, Arana works at Moonlight Caffe as a waiter and delivery boy.
On Saturdays and Sundays from morning to night, Arana has a job as an amusement park mascot who is paid every hour for a small fee. But with time from morning until Night, Arana enough to earn income that at least meet the needs of her daily meals.
Brak!
"*Damn! I'm gone, I'm sick of seeing a b*dain face like you*!" There was a woman coming out of the apartment door next to her with a suitcase in her hand.
His face displayed anger that could no longer be restrained. Still maniknya can not hide the sadness he felt, painful to the heart. He wiped away his tears unfeelably and passed away carrying his suitcase. Arana watched the incident with her own eyes, before turning to the side door.
There was a middle-aged man who was bare-chested with a woman who only wore thin t-shirts and half-thigh hotpants. The man embraces the woman beside him and both laugh at the first woman who has left the apartment.
"What a matching couple," inward Arana glanced faintly at the two people beside her.
Equally trash.
Arana drew her gaze, turned the door knob and entered. As soon as he entered, a voice greeted him.
"Meong~"
The snow-white cat swiped her body to Arana's feet. The nineteen-year-old girl immediately lowered her head and raised the cat with both hands.
"Hello, Snowy~ How are you at home, hm? Did you finish your food?" He said while holding his white Snowy—— cat next to his hand, while the other hand took off his shoes and placed them on a shelf near the entrance.
Arana turned on the lights, so that the room area of 3 meters x 3 meters was clearly visible in front of him. Not broad and dominated by white color, the wall paint mushroomed and almost peeling in some places. The space was divided into two regions. The right corner for the kitchen and small bathroom is covered. And another corner for the TV room and a long, single sofa facing a square table.
Near the entrance, there was a door that was the girl's room.
There was a cat-eating container near the sofa, and there were only a few pieces of cat food left in it.
"Well, Snowy is a smart cat~ Snowy finished his food, hum?" Tukas Arana while swiping his sharp nose into Snowy's pink nose.
"Meong~ Meong~"
Putting Snowy back down, Arana put her bag on the sofa just like that. She rolled up her hair and held it in a hairpin before grabbing a towel in front of the bathroom door and stepping in to rid herself of the smell of the sun after a day of sweating from working outdoors.
Geck! Geck! Geck!
"Fuck! Out you!"
There was a loud shout accompanied by a loud door knock from outside, making Arana who was sitting on the sofa slightly jerked. He turned his head, got up and walked to the door to realize that the one in front of his apartment door was the owner of the apartment.
"Auntie, what's the problem?" Arana asked as soon as she opened the door.
The woman in front of him had a mixed Chinese face. His eyes were narrow with white skin and short in stature.
He without further ado immediately said, "Your payment this month is in arrears. If you no longer want to live here, pack your things. I have over a dozen people who want to live here."
"I forgot!" Inner Arana when remembering that the deadline for apartment rental is yesterday the day after tomorrow.
He rubbed his forehead and smiled awkwardly. "Sorry aunt. I was busy enough to forget about the rent. I'll take the money now."
"Hurry up then." Said the woman urging Arana.
Arana left the door open as she stepped into her room. He opened the drawer with the key and took the money out of the storage box. Looking at the several hundred dollars in her hand, Arana sighed helplessly and went back to the front.
"This is the money, aunt. Sorry to bother aunt." Arana said apologizing.
The woman received the money that Arana gave her, counting it before nodding her head in satisfaction. "Other times pay your rent on time."
Arana nodded, letting the woman disappear on the steps before closing the door and sighing heavily. The money is back reduced.
Arana jumps up and lands on a gray sofa in a lying position. He grabbed Snowy who was curled up near the sofa and placed it on his stomach, stroked it and pulled out a few sentences that either the shapirre-eyed cat understood or not.
"Snowy, sister doesn't have much money after paying the rent. It seems that brother can't send you to the cat care home next week" he said.
Arana grabbed her phone on the table. An old black phone that was a gift from her grandmother when she was ten years old. It had been nine years, and it had been repeatedly repaired. The appearance is no longer good, but Arana has a deep impression of the phone.
He opened the WhatsApp app and found some messages from some of his friends.
[Rana, I heard from Amber if you refused a scholarship from Ocean University? Is correct? Arana, why refuse? It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be accepted to such a good university.]
Arana smiled and typed a reply to her best friend. [Their rules say not to allow students to do part-time work. So I refused it.]
[Yes just quit your part-tim job, Rana. You can ask for my and Amber's help first, once you get your S1 degree and get a job with it, you can return our help.]
[I can't always trouble you and Amber. It's okay, besides, I can go to college anytime.]
[You're very stubborn. You know we're always there for you.]
Arana gives a smile. Because he knows they are always there for him that makes him satisfied. At least even though he was not yet or even was not highly educated, he always had more than one friend.
[Thank you, Lily.]
As soon as she locked the screen of her phone, Arana stretched her body and closed her eyes. Until drowsiness attacks, Arana does not move into her room.
Dissolved in a dream accompanied by dim light street lights that highlight from the window curtains that are scattered.
