The end of July, summer, coincides with Sayuri's summer vacation. Me, Sayuri and Ryohei finally visited Kyoto. Ryohei's parents' residence and Sayuri's Grandmother's. But as close as that day seemed to me as depressed as I was about to get into unknown territory.
Actually I have a lot of worries, if we get married have children most women are forced to be housewives, there is a demand to be a perfect housewife, it is common in society. Even though Ryohei-san said she could do it with my mother's help.
"Sayuri, I don't know about our culture, you might not be reproached. It's not abroad, I don't know how your in-laws are either. A mother has to be perfect. Maybe you'll have to choose..."
"I have to how Mom, do I have to give up my career." Mom smiled at me.
"Shiori, after you have a child you'll know what you decide."
"I mean Mom?"
"Maybe you'll be afraid of losing your best time with your child. Then you let go of your career to be with them. You'll make your decision, I guess. Having the child has its own burden, being a good Mother and wife is also honorable Shiori. But Japan has also changed a lot, many households have double income, working wives are not taboo, although yes, your career is hampered because you also can not blame your colleagues who have 100% priority% to work."
"Yes, I know..."
"Shiori, the important thing is that you talk to Ryohei, what you decide to talk to her, if you're both, you need to talk and decide. Your husband is not a financially unstable person, if you take the decision to enjoy your role as a mother also consider it a reward, you almost 40 everyone already knows what you achieved, you know, maybe it's time you have a new career path, you can help your husband's business with the burden of work more controllable, no boss because you're his boss, you are free to delegate tasks because no one dares to give you criticism. You actually have a lot of freedom..." Mom smiled at me.
Yes it is true, but it still feels scary to lose career.
"You've been quiet lately. What was? Next week we go to Kyoto, do you have anything on your mind." Fortunately Ryohei was quite open to sharing. Somehow if I get someone I can't change my mind with. Must be complicated to wrestle with my own mind.
"Ryohei, do you think your mother would forbid me to work? Do you mind if I work? You know it's like I'm entering a territory I haven't been in...Mother said I would decide for myself if I had a child, having a child it felt different, I grew up with a Mother who was beside me, maybe I also felt sorry to leave my child later, she said, My mom said I'd be able to decide later when I have kids, but at the same time I'm afraid of losing my identity, I don't know what's going to happen."
"I think you'll be able to decide. Ibu Sayuri used to be a doctor, with long working hours. Finally while pregnant she decided to give up, she had enough morning sickness. And he enjoyed his role. The point is no one will look down on you if you choose that. How much you pay Honey, let me replace it." I grimaced.
"You know I have heard a comedian talk like this, ..." He stopped talking until I saw him. "Some people talk about feminism, women can do this, women can do that, they can get what they want themselves, but you know out there some smart women make better use of feminism, don't they know how good it is to live sponsored by other people's money."
I laugh. " Yes, who wouldn't want his life to be easier. But for me who from the beginning had everything from stepping on my own, it was like losing my self-esteem. Do you think I'm after something like that?"
"Shiori, when did I ever say you were chasing my money. I'm just saying, if we're husband and wife, I want you to be happy with me, not come home depressed and tired. You're free to decide that. Besides, I don't mind being your sugar daddy and our kid." I smiled at his words.
"It is important that you are happy to live it, if it is too heavy do not need to be forced. True said your mother, you will be able to decide well after we live it forward. But one thing you might have to suppress the ego, if you want your son to have your time. Later when it's time you'll know your choice. We'll talk about it again."
A choice I will make in time, Mama said.
Take a trip to Kyoto, a city with many temples and exotic pasts. We took the bullet train 2.5 hours to get there. In August, Kyoto is hotter than Tokyo, although in winter it is also cooler than Tokyo.
Kyoto does not have many high-rise buildings, some historical area zones are prohibited from building tall buildings. The rivers are cleaner, the trees are more numerous, the edge of the city is an unpretentious rural area.
If it feels like life is slower, people talk politely, even they have a special dialect that sounds like it has a tone and maybe tourists find that Kyoto people are more friendly.
"What do you remember your grandmother didn't like Sayuri." I asked him on the way, so I wouldn't make a mistake.
"Grandma, I think grandma is friendly. Grandpa is a talkative person. Which he did not like ... "Sayuri thought long. "Papa, what does Grandma not like? All I remember is that he doesn't really like spicy food. He didn't dare try spicy food."
"Hmm.. don't laugh in front of him, or talk too loudly in front of him, typical parents you have to keep the image first, talk after being asked, not you ask first, you ask first, later if you're familiar you can be free."
"Sister don't worry if I'm standing up for you. I'll help you talk to Grandma and Grandpa, there's Papa too, you'll be fine. Don't worry so much. After all, me and Papa have told me a lot, Brother." Sayuri calmed me down with her words.
I'm obviously worried. Everyone is worried about the first family meeting, it's a big thing. So for this meeting I brought Papa's precious wine collection because they also love wine.
"The garden is beautiful." I was clearly amazed by the park.
"Grandpa likes bonsai, and Grandma loves flowers. They're all plant lovers." Sayuri explained it to me.
A waiter opened the door for us. A still black haired woman came out welcoming us later, age curate looks of course, but she was still full of vigor with her friendly smile. Fortunately he did not put up a probing face.
"Grandmother's Brother Shiori,..." I bowed deeply to him.
"Shiori, let's not be so formal with Auntie." He came to me and smiled at me. He was really friendly. "You are beautiful as Sayuri described."
"Auntie, thank you for receiving me at Aunt's."
"You will always be accepted. Come on in, Uncle's waiting for you." He even walked beside me.
I went into that big house. The house, which is dominated by wood and white, feels comfortable. There are several bonsai in the room, Grandpa Sayuri is a bonsai lover.
"Kamrish,..." Sayuri ran to hug her Grandfather, who was smiling broadly at her.
"Grandfather missed you. How are you bad boy." Sayuri, who is dear to everyone, seems to be a child who always thinks positively also because of the positive environment around her. Even though the situation for him cannot be said to be easy.
"I'm not naughty Grandpa, I brought a son-in-law for you." His grandfather laughed and saw me. I bow to him.
"You must be Shiori, this kid has told me a lot about you. Come sit down."
"Ahh, I brought gifts for Uncle and Aunt. Please accept." They accepted it with thanks but did not open it.
The conversation flowed later. It was quite relaxed and full of laughter. Beyond my previous concerns they will ask how our plans after marriage did not happen, or be asked about difficult things that concern the future of our careers. Because if I'm asked at this time I'd be willing to answer it.
"Plan your wedding Ryohei as soon as possible, Sayuri is still here, next year maybe she's not here. We'll miss him too."
"Yes we'll plan it." Ryohei answered his mother.
"We believe you're old enough to decide anything. Just so you two are happy enough. Seeing Ryohei our son has a companion and Sayuri thinking of you as a friend is enough." His mother added again.
"Thank you for your Aunt and Uncle's blessing."
We stayed there for about two days, talked more, became more familiar, and eventually had to go back to Tokyo because we only took a day off plus a weekend off
"Not scary." I smiled as Ryohei asked.
"No. They seem to be entrusting everything to us."
"Hopefully we'll be together until later." A wish that was spoken while holding my hand.
A year ago I still thought that my life would pass by myself. But this summer a dream about another future came to me.
Ahh maybe Goddess Sakura is tired of seeing me alone under her branches. And conferred my unfortunate fate on Enmusubi-no-kami (the god of soul mates), and blessed me to have love under a sakura in full bloom.
I can't wait to see Hanami next year. Maybe he has another story for me.
I'll see you tomorrow
