In ancient times, the Kediri area was a large kingdom called the Medang Kingdom led by Prabu Airlangga. Sang Prabu is from Bali Island. He became King of Medang after marrying King Medang's daughter.
Prabu Airlangga is a religious figure, when he was getting older, he wanted to become a hermit. The throne of the Kingdom of Medang will be handed over to the daughter of his queen. The beautiful princess was named Dyah Sangramwijaya.
Dyah Sangrama wijaya refused his father's wishes. He has no desire to lead the government. Dyah Sangramwijaya wants to become a hermit just like his father.
Then he asked his father's blessing to become a hermit in Goa Selomangleng (at the foot of Mount Klotok Mojoroto District Kediri City). She changed her name to Dewi Kilisuci.
Upon hearing of his daughter's wishes, Prabu Airlangga thought that he should hand over the throne to the son of his concubine. The Prabu has two sons named Raden Jayengrana and Raden Jayanagara. Prabu felt confused to choose the one who would be given the throne of Medang Kingdom.
Prabu Airlangga is trying to find a fair way out. He told Empu Baradha to go to Bali to ask for the throne of the kingdom of Prabu Airlangga's father on the island of Bali. The royal throne in Bali will be given to one of his sons.
However, the royal throne belonging to Prabu Airlangga's father was already given to his younger brother. Prabu Airlangga did not feel angry, but Prabu asked for help to Empu Baradha to divide the Medang Kingdom into two parts for his two sons.
The next day, Empu Baradha flew while carrying a pitcher (a pitcher of clay) filled with water. From space, he spewed the jug water while flying across exactly in the middle of the Medang Kingdom. Miraculously, the land that was hit by the water spills turned into a river. The river is getting bigger and the flow is rushing. The people call it the Brantas River.
The kingdom of Medang is divided into two parts, bounded by the Brantas River. Prabu Airlangga handed over two parts of the Medang Kingdom to Raden Jayengrana and Raden Jayanagara. The part of Medang Kingdom east of the river was handed over to Raden Jayengrana, the kingdom was named Jenggala Kingdom.
While the western part of the river was ceded to Raden Jayanagara, the kingdom was named Kadiri Kingdom (now known as Kediri). Thus, Prabu Airlangga felt calm going from Medang Kingdom to become a hermit.
Prabu Airlangga became a hermit in Pucangan. He changed his name to Maharesi Gentayu. When he died, Prabu Airlangga's body was buried on the eastern slope of Mount Penanggungan.
