Folklore And Fairy Tales
Batur Lake

This is a couple who lived in Bali in ancient times. Both have been married for a long time, but have not been blessed with children. It seems that they are inexhaustible to pray and ask for the gift of children. Their prayers and requests were finally granted by Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. The wife conceived and later gave birth to a baby boy.

The baby boy grew very fast. He has a very strong appetite. Although he was still a baby, his appetite had been equivalent to that of ten adults. As time passed, the baby turned into a child. Very large body and increasingly strong appetite. He was also named Kebo Iwa, the uncle of the buffalo meaning of his name.

Increasing the day increased the body of Kebo Iwa. Growing his appetite. A day's eating needs are the same as a hundred adults' eating needs. Both of his parents were completely overwhelmed to fulfill Kebo Iwa's appetite.

Kebo Iwa is notoriously grumpy. His anger is explosive, especially if he does not get enough food. If he is angry, he will destroy anything he encounters. They used to destroy people's homes. In fact, even the temple of worship without fear will be destroyed if the anger has risen. Villagers will be very frightened if they find Kebo Iwa has been angry. However, Kebo Iwa is willing to help villagers who need his help. He is willing to make wells, move houses, flatten the hilly land, dam rivers, or transport large stones. He will quickly carry out a very heavy work done most of the humans. Of course, he asked for food in return in sufficient quantities to make him full.

As long as the residents who are mostly farmers get enough crops, the residents can still take to give food to Kebo Iwa. However, when there is a lean season’, the population begins to struggle and is overwhelmed to provide food for Kebo Iwa.

The residents became very worried. Not only were they anxious about thinking about how to find food for their respective families, they were also anxious about thinking about Kebo Iwa. What should be given to Kebo Iwa if they do not have food? Kebo Iwa certainly did not want to understand the situation they were experiencing. For Kebo Iwa, if he gets enough food, then he will be silent. If not, he will go berserk.

Villagers then gathered to discuss the problems they faced with Kebo Iwa. They planned a scheme to confront Kebo Iwa. If possible, eliminate that deeply troubling Kebo Iwa. After nodding off, the villagers finally found a way to make their plans come true.

All the villagers took to royong to collect food. Little by little the food finally collected up to enough in number to become Kebo Iwa. Some residents also took royong to collect limestone. After food and limestone were available, the Village Chief accompanied by several residents then met Kebo Iwa.

Kebo Iwa is relaxing after eating some livestock belonging to villagers. He was surprised to see some people coming to him. He said, “Do you want to come here? Do you have enough food to fill me up? I'm still hungry!”

“We have more than enough food to keep you full, ” replied the Village Chief. “We will give everything to you as long as you are willing to help us.”

Hearing that there was enough food to make his stomach full, Kebo Iwa immediately got up from the fall and said, “I will of course help you if you give me food. What can I help you with?”

The village head then explained about the number of houses that had been damaged due to the rampage of Kebo Iwa.

“That's because you guys weren't willing to give me food,” Kebo Iwa said without feeling guilty. “If you give me food, then I will not destroy your home either.”

Kebo Iwa was overjoyed to hear the Village Chief's plan. “Alright,” said. “That's an excellent plan. I'm of course willing to help you:’

Kebo Iwa then started working. He built several houses as the Village Chief wanted. He then dug the ground in the designated place of the Village Chief. His enormous power began to be created. While Kebo Iwa continued to dig, the villagers collected limestone rocks near where Kebo Iwa was digging.

Knowing the villagers were collecting limestone, Kebo Iwa was astonished. “For what do you guys collect that much limestone?” tanyakanya.

“After you have finished making a big well, we will wake up the house for you. Big house again very beautiful.” replied the Village Chief. “The house for you is very large it certainly requires a lot of limestone, right?”

Kebo Iwa was overjoyed to hear the Village Chief's reply. He was more excited to dig the ground. For days he worked hard. The more time rolling the greater the longer in the well made Kebo Iwa. The water began to radiate out until a large pool was created. However, the Village Chief kept asking him to dig the ground. Kebo Iwa according to because it continues to be promised to get a lot of food and also made a very large house. The hole in the ground grew deeper and deeper. The water that radiates out is also getting more and more.

Kebo Iwa continued to work until he was exhausted and hungry. He asked for time to rest. “Where is food for me?” yell Kebo Iwa later.

Villagers came to bring food for Kebo Iwa. Kebo Iwa was overjoyed to find such a large amount of food. He ate very voraciously.he continued to eat until his stomach was full. After his stomach was full, Kebo Iwa was sleepy. A little later he fell asleep with a snore. His snoring voice was very loud.

After finding Kebo Iwa had fallen asleep, the Village Chief then ordered all residents to throw limestone into the excavation hole made by Kebo Iwa. Many residents enter limestone rocks, completely unnoticed Kebo Iwa who is still asleep in his sleep.

More and more water emanates from the ground and limestone is increasingly incorporated into the excavation hole. As a result, Kebo Iwa's nose becomes blocked. Kebo Iwa choked and woke up. But it was too late for him. The water was gushing faster and limestone continued to be thrown into the large excavation hole he made. Despite having a very strong energy, Kebo Iwa was powerless in the end. Kebo Iwa finally exhaled his last breath in the huge excavation hole he had made himself.

The water continued to overflow and flooded the village where Kebo Iwa lived. The villages around the village were also flooded. A large lake was finally created. The lake is called Lake Batur. The soil around the lake was then turned into a mountain and called Mount Batur.
