Malin Kundang

In ancient times, there lived a widow with a boy, in the village of Air Manis Beach, Padang West Sumatra.

The woman was named Mande Rubayah, while her son was named Malin Kundang. Since childhood, Malin Kundang has been dead by his father. By the time Malin was an adult, there was a large ship anchored on the Sweet Water Beach. The arrival of the ship strengthens his heart to 3 go wandering.

“Bu, I want to find work, migrate to the country of people,” Malin said in a soft voice. “Not necessarily once a year there are large ships docked at this beach. I will seek work so that our fate is changed and freed from poverty.” Although with a heavy heart, Mande Rubayah finally allowed her son to leave.

Days changed, months went by, and years were numbered, Malin had left his village without ever telling his mother. One day, a large ship docked at the Sweet Water beach. Seeing that, Mande Rubayah also crowded close to the ship. He was convinced that the young man was Malin Kundang. Without being awkward, he immediately hugged Malin tightly, as if afraid of losing

son again. Then he greeted Malin with a hoarse voice, because he held a happy cry.

“Malin, my son, why did you leave mom so long?” Malin was stunned because he did not believe that the woman was his mother.

Before he could think, his beautiful wife said,”Cuih! This bad woman is your mother? Why did you lie to me?” Then he said again. “Didn't you say your mother was a noble like us?”

Hearing his wife's words, Malin Kundang pushed the old woman to the sand. Mande Rubayah said again, “Malin, Malin, my son. I'm your mother, son!” Malin Kundang ignored his mother's words.

“Hai, Old woman! My mother is not like you, you look very poor and dirty!” malin said as he pushed the old woman unconscious.

When Mande Rubayah realized, the Sweet Water Beach was deserted. At sea he saw Malin's ship getting away. His heart was like being stabbed. His hands were raised to the sky. He then exclaimed, “Yes Allah, the Almighty, if he is not my son, I forgive him. But if it is true that he is my son, Malin Kundang, I beg your justice.”

Not long after, the weather in the middle of the sea that had been bright, suddenly turned dark. Somehow at first, suddenly came a big storm hit the ship Malin Kundang. Suddenly the ship was smashed to pieces. Then the waves hit the beach.

The next day, at the foot of the hill was seen pieces of the ship that had become stone, that was the ship Malin Kundang. Not far from that place, a stone that resembles a human body appeared. That said, that's the body of Malin Kundang an ungodly child who was exposed to the curse of his mother to stone. In between the rocks, swimming anchovies, starfish, and mackerel fish.
