Folklore And Fairy Tales
Princess Junjung Buih

Once upon a time in South Kalimantan, stood the Kingdom of Amuntai. His people lived peacefully under the rule of two leaders, King Patmaraga and his younger brother, King Sukmaraga.

The two kings ruled fairly, respected each other, and lived harmoniously. But there is one thing that reduces their happiness, that they have not been blessed with children.

The younger brother, King Sukmaraga and his wife, crave twins. And they constantly ask for it in prayer. Finally, God granted their prayers. King Sukmaraga was very happy, every night he stroked his wife's stomach while saying, “May the child in your womb be a capable twin son.”

His wife just smiled but inwardly agreed to that hope. After nine months of pregnancy, a handsome twin son was born. King Sukmaraga announced the happy news to his brother and all the people.

King Patmaraga was also happy for the birth of his nephew. But in my heart, he was very sad. He also wants to have children. Not necessarily a pair of boys, girls will he accept with joy.

King Patmaraga prayed, asking for God's guidance. He got the answer through a dream. In his dream, King Patmaraga was asked to be imprisoned in the Great Temple located outside the Kingdom of Amuntai. The next day, without delay, King Patmaraga departed with several guards and palace elders, Datuk Pujung.

There, King Patmaraga immediately imprisoned for a few days. Even though he had not been guided, he was sure God would grant his prayers. Sure enough on the way home, King Patmaraga passed the river. How surprised he was when he saw a beautiful baby girl floating in the river.

“What is it? Did I not see wrong? How can there be a baby here?” ask in the heart.

Very carefully, he picked up the baby. “Catuk Pujung, help me hold this baby.”

Datuk Pujung swiftly took the baby from the arms of King Patmaraga. How wonderful they were, the baby did not cry but spoke!

They gaped at the words spoken from the baby's mouth, “Don't take me like this. Ask 40 beautiful women to pick me up. One more thing, I can't go naked like this. You must provide a sheet of woven blanket within half a day only.”

King Patmaraga soon ordered Datuk Pujung to return to the palace and held a competition to get the blanket the baby requested. In addition, he also had to gather 40 beautiful women.

Hearing the announcement, the people were rowdy with whispers asking who could weave a blanket in half a day. The women started working. They use the best threads.

But until the appointed time, no one is finished. Grandfather Pujung was almost desperate, when suddenly a woman approached him.

“Sir, this is my woven blanket. Check carefully if this blanket is enough to cover the baby King Patmaraga?” he said as he handed her a neatly folded blanket.

Datuk Pujung unfolded the quilt and “Waaahhhhh... beautiful quilt,” muttered the women who crowded around Datuk Pujung.

“Who is your name? I think you deserve to be King Patmaraga's babysitter,” said Datuk Pujung.

“My name is Queen Kuripan. I would be very happy if King Patmaraga deigned to make me a nanny for his daughter,” replied the woman.

Datuk Pujung, Queen Kuripan, don 40 beautiful women set out to pick up King Patmaraga. The baby was wrapped in a blanket made by Queen Kuripan.

“Vintage. Because I found you floating on the froths, then I named Princess Jejung Buih,” said King Patmaraga.

The baby smiled, as if agreeing with King Patmaraga. The happiness of the people of Amuntai has been complete with two kings and their sons. The country is peaceful and happy.
