Folklore And Fairy Tales
The Origin of the Word Babah

The Javanese used to call the Chinese by the name “Babah”. According to East Java folklore, the origin of the word Babah comes from the word “Mbabah” which means to find the way. That said, this fairy tale is made up by ethnic Chinese in Indonesia to keep their distance from ethnic Javanese. Here is the story:

Adam, the great-grandmother of man, had four children, two men and two women. One man is handsome and the other is ugly. Likewise with women, one woman looks good and the other looks ugly.

After the four children had grown up, Adam wanted to marry his daughter. To be fair, a beautiful son will be married to his ugly daughter. And vice versa, his ugly son will be married to his beautiful daughter. The wish of Prophet Adam was opposed by his handsome son and his beautiful daughter. They reasoned that the beautiful should marry the beautiful too and the ugly should marry the ugly as well. But Adam was still on his decision.

No doubt, he got his father's decision, one night, the handsome son of Prophet Adam with his beautiful daughter decided to run away together. They went through the wilderness “mbabah” road. Mba' means to find a way.

The word Babah comes from the word mbabah. According to the Chinese, the handsome and beautiful son of Prophet Adam became the grandmother of the Chinese moyg. That is why Chinese people are beautiful and handsome while Javanese are not. The Javanese were stopped from marrying Chinese women on the grounds later kualat married “paren”. While the Chinese are allowed to marry Javanese women because it is considered “young” brother.

Such is the origin story of the word Babah. Of course this is just a fairy tale, so there is no need to believe it. Because in fact there are Javanese people who are beautiful and some are not, as well as the Chinese. Regarding marriage, today people are free to marry anyone, which is important to love each other.
