Don't Want to Split

Don't Want to Split
Chapter 5 - A Misery

"Yes. In the eyes of the law, you are still legally the wife of Mr. Ezra Halley." - Dr. Sandra.

Doctor Sandra's words made Zefanya's heart almost stop beating.

"Is that what you're saying, Doc?" Zefanya asked, her voice was very small. More like a whisper.

"I'm telling you the truth, madam" said Dr. Sandra, looking serious on her face.

'Your marriage is a sin. I know you fell in love, but he's not for you. Dump it! Throw away - far away your feelings for Ezra.'

'God will curse me if I don't tell you about this fact.'

'You're not for him.'

'And he's not for you either.'

The echoes of that voice re-emerged in his memory. The figure that had been haunting his subconscious again appeared more sinister. The voice became a huge boulder that stuck in his heart and kept flashing in his head, haunting him wherever he went.

The inner Zephaniah is raging. On the one hand, he knew that they had to separate. But the other side of Zefanya's heart kept saying she couldn't do it without Ezra by her side.

Zefanya's lips quivered withstanding the cries. "How can we not get divorced? I remember my lawyer going to see Ezra back then." Zefanya muttered as if talking to herself.

"According to Mrs Laura's story, you were hit by a car and in a coma when your lawyer handed the letters to Mr. Halley's lawyer. And as you know, Mr. Halley refused a raw divorce request from you."

"So we're still legal husband and wife?" Zefanya once again asked, hoping that Doctor Sandra was misinformed.

"Yes, Madam." Doctor Sandra leaned her body towards Zefanya, looking at her concernedly. "I regret that this made you shaken."

Zefanya stared blankly. "Why hasn't anyone told me about this before?"

"Based on the treatment procedures that we have been applying, the best treatment for amnesia patients is to let them recall their past. That way their bodies will be better prepared to receive information and not be shaken as you experience."

Dr. Sandra explained. He paused for a moment, rubbing the back of Zefanya's hand. "We want your memory to come back naturally. Unfortunately, tonight your husband forced us to break the procedure. He's willing to sign a waiver that he'll bear all the risks. Therefore, I apologize. I don't really want to do it, but your husband's almost crazy, too. He suffered so much because of you."

For a while, Zefanya pensively then again pleaded with Doctor Sandra. "Do I have to stay here until all my memories come back?"

"It's not like that, ma'am. You can recover like this and getting most of your memories is a miracle. But no one can be sure an amnesiac will remember everything. It all comes back to each other's condition and as time goes by it's usually the memory will return by itself."

"But to get out ahead of time, I have to ask permission from Ezra right? Can't you do something?" asked Zefanya in despair.

Everyone around him had served all his needs well, but Zefanya still felt like a prisoner. It felt like he had not seen the outside world for a long time, his feelings were cramped.

"As a Doctor of course I want you to come out healthy after you have overcome your fears" replied Dr. Sandra patiently.

"But when? I can't wait to walk - the road to see the ancient buildings in Edinburgh in the afternoon." Zefanya lamented.

Doctor Sandra's face changed, looking for the right word to explain.

Doctor Sandra hugged Zefanya tightly, this young lady looks so fragile. He imagined if his daughter had experienced something like this. It would be very sad. "No, Honey. It's not like that." replied Dr. Sandra finally. Realizing that Zefanya's emotions were still unstable, the kind-hearted doctor let Zefanya cry in his arms.

"Do you know where you are now?"

Her Zefanya let go of her embrace, her eyes blinked a few times. Doctor Sandra's question made her stunned.

'Did he speak wrongly? Don't don't this isn't Scotland!'

"Am I crazy? Can't you remember where I am right now?" tanyanya could not believe it.

"No, Honey. You're not crazy. Amnesia patients often do not know where they are when their memory partially recovers. This is normal because all the information overlaps." denied Doctor Sandra firmly.

"Don't comfort me, Doctor. Could I not be healed?" zefanya's throat felt dry as she said it.

"You're in the process of recovery, ma'am. You haven't seen the outside world. But it doesn't matter if you have a good support system."

"No matter how? Tell me where I am!" sergeant Zefanya.

"You're at the Royal National Orthopedic."

"The Royal National Orthopedic?"

"Yes." Yeah."

Zefanya's shoulders are decays. The guilt is getting worse. "So I was in the best hospital in London? And Ezra bears all the costs?"

Doctor Zefanya nodded. "You're in the right place. We used to treat patients with severe injuries due to accidents as well as post-accident mental health recovery. Your husband has done his best for you."

His zefanya bit his lips, his heart was sore. What the hell has he done? He had already broken the hearts of men as good as Ezra by sending divorce papers. But that was not his wish, if only there was another way besides getting divorced.

"Your husband is the best man. He did not break your marriage vows, did not cheat on you or did anything to desecrate the sanctity of your marriage. Speak kindly to him what problems make you want to part with him. I'm sure he'll figure out a way to make things good for you."

"It was you who ran away from your house without explanation, then disappeared for months and suddenly a lawyer came to hand over the divorce papers to your husband. I'm telling you this so you know the real facts."

"Yes." said Zefanya slowly while trying to recall the pieces of events before the accident.

"If I may give you advice, think again. I can feel that Mr. Halley is the best man you can say. Talk to him honestly. Even he will definitely grant your wish to separate if it can make you happy."

Zefanya. What Dr. Sandra said was right. Ezra would have divorced her if she had pleaded well. Not because the man did not love her. But it is precisely because Ezra always prioritizes his happiness above everything including his own interests.

"But I dare not, Doctor." Zefanya finally confessed her weakness before Doctor Sandra.

"Why?"

"Because the honesty I say will not only break my heart but also his heart. I don't want him to feel the pain I feel when I know the facts." Zefanya pilu.
