“I'm glad you took the time to have dinner with us even though you were overtime,” said Ketrin. She makes sure to prepare dinner and asks Ruby to have dinner with them before overtime.
“I'm sorry for spending more time at the office lately. Clients come almost every week.” Ruby looked tired and did not eat well. Ketrin noticed but declined to comment.
“Jenny is with you, I hope she is very helpful. Is he going to spend overtime with you tonight?” Ketrin tries to capture Ruby's expression, but Ruby doesn't look up. He continued to play with his fork.
“I guess for a few hours,” replied Ruby before forcefully putting a piece of food into her mouth. “By the way, the food is good.”
Ketrin smiles. He wasn't sure if it was an honest compliment or a compulsion just to make him happy. “Thank you. I hope my cooking is better than Jenny's.”
Ruby scrunched her forehead while looking at his wife. He didn't know what Ketrin meant but he was sure he didn't like it. “What are you saying? Don't compare yourself to Jenny!”
“I don't understand why he keeps bringing you food.” Ketrin.
“And who gave you that information Your best friend Sean?”
Irene and Leo looked at each other. Feeling the tense atmosphere between their parents. Irene cleared her throat trying to ease the tension. “Dad, I forgot to mention it. I saw Uncle Daniel at Leo's birthday party last week. He sent a gift to Leo.”
Ketrin and Ruby looked at Irene. And Ruby spoke first. “Who invited him?”
Irene smiled and shook her head, “Nothing I thought. But it's okay. Maybe because he's dad's best friend, so he gave a gift to Leo.”
Ketrin's eyes were on Leo. I don't know why his heart is beating faster. He doesn't even know why he's nervous.
“Yes dad, I really liked the gift from uncle Daniel. He gave me a very big toy,” Leo smiled as he explained to Ruby.
Ruby chuckled at Leo. “Oh so Daniel gave you a big toy? She's pretty weird, I don't know where she heard about your birthday. Did you tell Sean, Ketrin? I think Daniel knows from Sean then.”
Ketrin was still staring at Leo not hearing Ruby's words. His mind was filled with so many thoughts. And frightened.
“Ketrin?”
“Uh …. Excuse me. No, I didn't tell your friend anything,” Ketrin shook his head.
...****************...
Jenny was so happy that night. She never thought she would still spend the night with Ruby after some time. He honestly thought, after what happened in the office a few days ago, Ketrin would forbid Ruby from 'passing the time'. Although he was not sure what was in Ketrin's head, he was sure of what was in his head, and that was more important.
The upset and disappointment on the eve of her failed date has gone. All the fears and worries that haunted him throughout the weekend were forgotten. All he could feel at that moment was happiness and satisfaction.
At a candlelit dinner in his apartment, all they do is laugh at their childhood memories. Jenny felt it was the most intimate conversation she had ever had with someone. He never felt so comfortable talking about it other than with Lucas.
"Is marriage fun?" Jenny suddenly asked after biting the last cake she made.
Ruby smiled awkwardly. One thing she is not comfortable talking about with Jenny is her marriage.
"It's okay. I just want to know. If you don't want to answer, that's okay," Jenny reassured Ruby after realizing she was a little uncomfortable
"yeah. There is no perfect relationship. Marriage included. We had bad days, we had good days. Actually the kids make it worthwhile."
Jenny nodded, putting her chin in her hand as she looked at the married man she liked and hated at the same time. "Have you ever thought, what if you married a different person? Or what if you don't get married at all?"
Ruby looked at Jenny's provoking eyes. The smile on Jenny's face told her something she couldn't understand. "Honestly, there's. We married young. I impregnated him at a very young age. Our parents didn't like it. Especially her parents. Our parents were both in the business world and they were afraid of scandals. So they forced us to get married."
Jenny grinned, "Forced? You regret it, somehow?"
Ruby shook her head, "Actually not a regret, but I feel they are withholding our right to decide for ourselves. And it's true, it appeared in my head many times, what if I don't marry him? Well, maybe they won't give me the right to Irene and that's the most terrible thing that could happen to me. And Leo. We don't plan on having Leo. But I can't imagine my life without Leo. Our children are everything to me. "
The fire in Jenny's eyes slowly faded and turned into worry. He doesn't know exactly who it is for. For Ruby, or herself. "How about getting married again? Has it ever crossed your mind?"
That question made Ruby flinch. He swallowed several times not knowing how to answer the question without him being wrong
Jenny suddenly giggled as she poured wine into her glass, "I love how I always scare you. You know, I always dreamed of marrying the right guy. The man who will love and accept me. It doesn't matter how dark my past is. But did you know? That's not gonna happen."
Ruby's eyes glued to Jenny before venturing out to ask, "It's impossible not to like you Jenny. Why are you thinking about that?"
Jenny chuckled, drowning herself with a glass of wine. She then looked into Ruby's eyes with a suggestive smile on her face, "Because she still wears the wedding ring on her finger."
Ruby thought her heart had stopped beating for a while. He had already expected Jenny to say that, but it surprised him differently when told to him in person.
...****************...
Ruby groaned as it came into kond*m. His eyes closed shut as he enjoyed his release. Grunts as she empties herself inside Jenny.
As he rolled on the bed, he stared at the ceiling. Breathing heavy. Jenny then lay her head on Ruby's chest, gently stroking Ruby's stomach with her finger.
"Thank you for being here" whispered Jenny.
Jenny felt Ruby's lips touch her forehead. Jenny smiled before closing her eyes. But he opened it immediately when Ruby's phone was on. Ruby picked it up from the side table and saw that Ketrin was on the phone. Jenny nodded and Ruby answered the call.
"Hi," Ruby replied without any sign of interest in her voice. Eyes closed from exhaustion while gently rubbing Jenny's arm with her hand.
Ketrin took the time to answer causing Ruby to open her eyes. "Where are you?"
"office. I told you I have a lot of work to do. Wh why? Is there a problem at home?"
"none. I called Daniel. He said you were with him. It looks like he's at the club. The call was interrupted because he didn't seem to hear me. Did you go with him?" Ketrine
inquiring.
Ruby took her hug off Jenny and sat on the bed. Don't know what to say. He forgot to tell Daniel what to say and he was completely screwed up. "Previously, yeah. She was dancing and dating so I left early. I texted him. Maybe he hasn't read it."
A humming came out of Ketrin's lips. "so. Where is Jenny?"
Ruby looked at Jenny who was looking at her as she spoke. Ruby felt uncomfortable hearing Ketrin's question ask. He felt as if something was wrong. Ketrin never questioned him every time he came out. " Jenny's with me but I'll send her home early. Ketrin asked, is something wrong?"
Ruby heard a sob from across. And soon after, the familiar bell made her jump out of bed.
"What's wrong?" Jenny asked as she realized the panic that had suddenly appeared on Ruby's face. She watched as Ruby picked up her clothes on the floor and hurriedly put them on. "What's wrong? Is there an emergency at home?"
Ruby did not answer. Instead, he picked up his phone and headed to the door. Jenny ran behind Taehyung and gripped Ruby's wrist.
"I have to go home. I think Ketrin has a clue that we're together now." Ruby finally answered. Anxiety was evident in her eyes as she looked at Jenny whose tears were beginning to pool.
As Ruby's hand gripped the doorknob, she felt Jenny's arm wrapped around her waist. "Don't go." He heard Jenny's whisper.
Taking a deep breath, she turned to face Jenny. Holding tightly onto the woman's hand while looking at Jenny's face. Wiping the tears that fell on Jenny's cheek, Ruby shook her head, "I can't stay here now. If Ketrin has a lead, we're both found out."
"Are you scared? I thought you wanted me to stay? You said it."
Ruby sighed again, "Jen, I know. But I think it's better to be careful, right? I have to go home now."
"Don't go. Stay still."
"Jen?"
"OK," Jenny snorted while wiping away more tears. "I'll let you go home now to fix whatever's wrong. But you have to come back for me."
“Jen?”
"Him or me?"
Ruby was surprised to hear the words coming out of Jenny's mouth. It was definitely not what she expected because Jenny made her realize that she knew her position in her life. "Did you make me choose?"
Jenny smiled weakly, "If it sounds like that, yes. I'll make you choose."
Ruby closed her eyes in frustration while rubbing the back of her head. " Jenny, I thought you told me that you know your position in my life."
"I changed my mind. You don't have to answer now. I'll be waiting for you on Friday. If you come, you choose me. If not, then ... Done."
"Jenny, it doesn't have to be like this."
Jenny gave Ruby an evil smile. His eyes must have changed their expression. From the previous plea, it now turned into one that provoked. And that scared Ruby a little. "Yes, it doesn't have to be like this. You told me to stay. I stayed. Now, I'm asking you to stay. Ilove you. Home now. And I expect you to come home to me on Friday. I'm gonna
waiting for you."
Jenny opens the door before kissing Ruby's lips. As she closed the door, Jenny slowly slid to the floor. Hugged her knees closer to her body as she cried. He felt it was close but he refused to give up. Notnot now. Never does.
It is not he who should feel abandoned. It must be Ruby. It should be them.
