Liona walked through the room while checking the contents of the cabinets and shelves that were there. He was surprised when he found various bottles of wine that had the best quality. Every bottle in the room is precious. There were even some types of wine that he had never heard of his name before. Liona stopped in front of a bottle of Lafite wine produced in 1987. “You have this Lafite? Ha ha ha people on the internet often talk about the Lafite wine produced in 1982. Why don't you have that wine?”
Somehow, Reynard was already standing behind Liona's body. The man then explained, “It was just a joke in a TV drama. Actually Lafite wine produced in 1987 is the most valuable.”
Liona looked at the wine bottle in front of her expectantly.
“Do you want to try it?” ask Reynard.
Liona nodded with excitement. Forgive his slightly shameless attitude for wanting to taste the legendary wine. When else would he have the chance to try this rare wine? He just wants to add to his experience. Reynard took out a corkscrew from the cupboard and pressed it against the corks of the wine bottle. The rotating spiral teeth immediately pierced through the bottle cork and pulled it out automatically.
Reynard then took out a wine decanter and poured the entire bottle of wine. The man immediately took out two glasses for them. “Come we go.” Reynard returned to his room and Liona followed the man behind her in silence. There are two single sofas in the bedroom with a small table in the middle. Reynard placed the wine bottle on the table and placed the wine glass in front of him.
“Did you smell something? What smell is it?” Liona asked with a frown.
“When you open a bottle of old wine, there will be a strange smell coming out. That's why we need a decanter. If we pour wine into the decanter, the strange smell will disappear. The decanter will maximize the contact area between the wine and the air. This will make the wine fully oxidized. After that, the aroma of wine will come out by itself.”
Liona nodded like a chicken pecking at rice. “About how long will it take?”
“About an hour.” replied Reynard.
Liona was silent. “This is just a bottle of wine. Why need such a long ritual before we drink it?” ask Liona again. ‘What will they do now? They couldn't possibly wait for an hour in silence while looking at each other, right?’
He should immediately find a topic of conversation.
“It looks like you really like drinking wine. You have a large collection of various types of wine.” said Liona started the conversation.
“I used to drink a lot but since Felicia came in my life, I tried not to drink alcohol too often.”
“Oh so the story.”
There was a slightly embarrassing silence in the room again. Both are silent.
And the silence continued for a few minutes. The room looked silent. Liona was lying on the sofa as it started to get sleepy. He yawned and said, “How about I tell you a story about my childhood?”
“When I was a kid, wait. I don't have many good childhood memories. It might get a little boring.”
“No problem for me.” said Reynard. Since he wanted to know everything about Liona, he did not care whether the story was boring or not.
“Alright then. Where should I start? Let's start with a happy story. When I was six years old, I was sent to the Mandalai tribe. Do you know that place? It was a bad place because the people there live in poverty line but the scenery is very beautiful.”
Liona stopped her sentence for a while and let out a long sigh, “I still remember that the sky in that place looked so blue and the air there was sweet. I spent the happiest time there.”
“Mandalai County?” Reynard furrowed his brows.
“Why? Have you ever visited that place?” ask Liona.
“Yes. I've been there.”
Liona nodded, she was unaware of Reynard's change in facial expression. “I lived there for almost five years. My mother died when I was three. My mother received some inheritance from my grandfather. Since grandma was old and unable to take care of me, I was sent to the orphanage.” Lione paused for a moment.
“One day husband and wife Adam and Hesty came to my adopted home and then Adam sold all the inheritance left by my mother that was prepared for my future. The jerk kept the money he got for himself after adopting me from the orphanage and making him my guardian. I was a kid and I didn't understand anything, he was looking for all my mother's possessions including the house. I don't know where she knows all about my mother's legacy.”
Liona hugged her knees like a child in an attempt to protect herself from all those painful memories. “Adam really is a bastard. He sent me to Mandalai County to Grandma's house when I was six. He never mentioned anything about grandma before he sent me to the village. I thought Grandma was dead. I don't even know what Grandma's face looks like. When grandma came to pick me up from my station, I didn't know what was waiting for me in the future.”
“Will grandma be nice to me? But luck is still on my side. Grandma is the best, she is a sweet and loving woman. She cares about me and always cooks my favorite food. Even when our money is limited sometimes grandma can only afford to buy me food and she would rather not eat than see me starving.”
Reynard heard Liona's story carefully. Liona suddenly looked up and turned to face the man. “You've heard of Mandalai district right? The area is not very large but the population is quite high. All men who have the opportunity to choose to leave the village because they want to find a job. So what was left behind in the village were parents or women and children. But the people there are always nice, helping each other and caring for each other. When someone cooks it is not uncommon that he will share it with their neighbors. Life is very peaceful.”
Reynard could only smile at it.
“I remember the village was a large orchard. We help garden owners during the harvest season every year. The money we received might not be much but we got a bag of apples and bananas when we were done working. So that fruit is what I ate most often when I was a child.”
Liona who told the story also re-imagined the atmosphere of the village where she used to live. The peace and simplicity he yearns for without the intrigue of those who put a mask of hypocrisy on their faces.
