“If night comes before, or you are in the afternoon, then hold your children (at home), because when the devil is scattered. If it has passed a moment from the time of night, then let them (if you want to go out). Close the door and think to Allah, for Satan cannot open a closed door. Cover your containers of drink and food and think to Allah, even if by simply putting something on it, turn off your lights” (HR. Bukhari 3280, Muslim 2012).

And with another lafadz of Bukhari (5624):

“Turn off your lights, if you want to sleep. And close the doors and close the vessels and containers of food and drink ye”

And in the account of Ahmad (14747):

“close your vessels and places of drinking. Turn off the lights when you go to sleep. Because fuwaisiqoh (small animals, such as lizards, geckos, etc.) sometimes nudge the wick and can burn the house. And hold your children (at home) in the afternoon because the jinn are scattered at that time and sometimes kidnap him”

Also in Ahmad's account (14597):

“close the doors at night, and turn off the lights. Cover the vessels and places to eat and drink, even if you only put a piece of wood on it”

These hadiths point out several things:

It is recommended to prohibit small children from leaving the house at night. That is from the afternoon before Maghrib until a while after isya’. Because at that time the devil in the form of a jinn was scattered on the earth. As for after some time of entry night time (i.e., isya’ time), it is allowed to exit.

It is recommended to close the doors of the house, rooms, and windows at night. When there is no need to open it. Recommend this especially when going to sleep.

It is also recommended to close the vessel, place to drink, place to eat or for example. If there is no object to close it, it is recommended to keep trying to close even imperfectly, such as by putting a piece of wood on it.

Ibn ‘Abdil Barr says:

“in this hadith is an order to close the door of the house at night. Sunnah is ordered as a form of love to protect humans from the interference of demons in the form of humans or in the form of jin” (Al Istidzkar, 8/363).

Ibn Battal said:

“Prophet Shallallahu’alaihi Wasallam ordered to close the doors during the night because it was worried that the spread of jin would make people possessed or cause fear and interference to the mu’min” (Syarah Shahih Al Bukhari, 9/67).

　

Imam An Nawawi explained:

“This Hadith contains a number of teachings of goodness and adab-adab that gather the dowry of the world and the hereafter. The Prophet of Allah shallallahu alaihi wa sallam ordered to carry out the adab-adab as a cause in order to avoid demonic interference. Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla made these things as a reason to avoid demonic interference. So the devil is unable to open the lid of the container of eating and drinking, cannot open the door and cannot disturb small children and others if the causes are done. As also mentioned in the shahih hadith that if a servant reads basmalah when entering his house, then the devil says, “There is no place for me to spend the night.“. They mean say: “we don't have the strength to spend the night at their home”. Similarly if before berjima’ a read,

/Allahumma jannibnas syaithoona wa jannibis syaitho0na maa rozaqtanaa/

“Yes Allah, keep us from shetan and keep away the sheath from what You give us.”

Then it will be the cause of salvation for the baby who will be born from demonic interference. Similarly it is similar in some famous hadiths and shahih” (Sharah Shahh Muslim, 13/185).

However, you can open the door or window at night if you need to. Because the order to do adab-adab above is in order to prevent the occurrence of bad or sadd adz dzari’ah. The fiqhiyyah rule says:

“everything that is forbidden dzatnya, not allowed except emergency.everything that is forbidden because sadd adz-dazara’i, allowed when there hajat”.

And what is meant by al-Hajah or hajat are things that have demands to do so and if not fulfilled then he gets distress and difficulty, but not to the point of harm.

Therefore Shaykh Muhammad Shalih Al Munajjid said:

“if the occupants of the house want to open the window because the air is too hot for example, as long as it avoids things that are haram, then it is okay to open. Or if there is a need to open a particular door because of the frequent pacing of people in and out, then it is okay to open. After the need is finished, immediately closed”
