"Married to Sofia."
Sofia's gaze sharpened. His ears had been fine all along, so what Jordan said was not a mishearing.
"Yes?"
"Married to me, that's the solution."
Sofia clenched her hands. Their eyes clashed. As not enough with the words of surprise, Sofia's heart was pounding fast as well.
There was a moment of silence.
"My answer is Sofia." Jordan is frustrated. He repeatedly wet his lips. Calmed his chest that was about to explode.
This is indirectly a proposal. But far from a special word.
"Ah, but.." Sofia nervous. "I'm still Alex's wife." The coldness spread throughout Sofia's body. Half-dead.
"I'll take care of everything. As long as you agree."
"Jordan, but..."
Sofia's trembling hand grabbed Jordan's hand. Jordan's hardened face was obvious.
"I did ask Jordan for help, but not like this. Jordan doesn't have to sacrifice himself."
"So Sofia refused it?"
"No, not like that. I'm just thinking about Jordan."
"I also thought of Sofia."
Sofia.
"But this is Jordan's wedding. It can't be like this."
"Why not?"
"I'm a lowly man, and Jordan isn't."
Jordan's forehead is wrinkled.
"Yes?"
Sofia was silent for a moment then continued.
"Actually I was an illegitimate child. I was born to a lowly mother. I'm not Baroness Barell's son. My mother was my father's mistress." Sofia's head is down. The harsh reality that Sofia wants to hide. Even Alex doesn't know.
"Unauthorized child?"
"I'm not the aristocrat Jordan thought I was. I cheated everyone, forgive me." Sofia re-strapped her head.
"Really?"
Sofia nodded.
"This marriage is unlikely to happen, Jordan must find a proper woman."
"If Sofia rejects him then what will Sofia do? What kind of help does Sofia really want?" Trying to unravel the complexities in his brain, Jordan remained calm outside. But inside, heat filled his body.
"I have a plan."
"What plan?"
"I'm going to leave this power."
"Yes?" Compared to the story about who is not the legitimate child of her family, Sofia's speech surprised Jordan more.
Sofia nodded.
"I left all the supplies I had prepared at the palace. So I asked Jordan for help. I will definitely repay you, even if you have to work for a lifetime."
"No, that's too dangerous." Jordan's rejection is real.
Eyelids with long fur belonging to Sofia blinked. The word 'no' from Jordan sounds creepy.
"Then how did you break up with Alex? You're still tied up as Sofia's husband and wife. Moreover, Alex is the emperor of this country."
"Ah."
Jordan's right. Sofia pensively. His opponent was no ordinary person. Free if she is free if the status as the emperor's wife is still attached. Sofia had not thought that far. Alex easily flips the entire empire in order to find him.
The real freedom is not out of the palace, but out of Alex.
"I haven't thought about it." Sofia shook her head weakly.
"I'll help Sofia. Sofia trusts me, doesn't she?" Urge Jordan. The night is getting late and she must get Sofia's answer before the sun rises. Anyhow.
Sofia nodded slowly.
"Sofia quite answered yes, I'll take care of everything."
"But Jordan, marriage isn't a bit of an exaggeration?" Sofia bit her lower lip.
"Sofia trusts me, doesn't she?"
"Sstt. If Sofia believes me that's enough. Follow all my orders, huh?"
"I owe Jordan a lot."
"No. Friends should help each other, right?" A faint smile rose on Jordan's lips.
"Jordan..." Call Sofia soft.
"Hm?"
"Jordan doesn't have to go this far."
Jordan's forehead is wrinkled. It seems like their conversation always goes back to the beginning. Bargaining is difficult.
"I want to help Jordan too." Sofia.
"Sophia..." Jordan clasped Sofia's hand. "Sofia agreed enough then followed my lead."
"Is it okay?"
Jordan nodded for sure.
"Then I agree."
Jordan pulls Sofia by the hand and hugs her. She brushed her hair and whispered.
"All will be well Sofia. Trust me."
Sofia's originally stiffened body was now softened. He returned Jordan's embrace. If there was no one this Sofia could not imagine, what her life would be like. Jordan is his helper. He owes her a lot.
Looking at Sofia's sleeping face, Jordan's lips smiled faintly. He tidied up the blanket and then got up. The morning soon arrived and he had a lot of business to do today.
Jordan got up and walked out. Steps sounded along the hallway to his office. The darkness of the night changed with the light of the morning. He needed a short nap to clear his mind, just two or three hours.
As soon as Jordan opened his eyes, the preparations were done. He cleaned and tidied himself up helped by some servants.
"Sophyia?" Jordan asked the butler who was standing not far from him.
"Miss doesn't seem to be awake yet."
"Leave it. We talked until late last night. Please pay attention to Sofia's food, she's looking skinny lately."
"Your Majesty."
"And, prepare. Sofia has agreed and the rest will be taken care of today."
The butler nodded in understanding.
"Sir White is waiting for His Majesty."
Jordan nodded then briefly looked at his appearance in the mirror. Today was his first appearance at an imperial political gathering. His presence must be impressive.
"Duke Hexalios?"
The meeting hall in the main palace of the empire was in an uproar. Present someone who never imagined would come.
Today is a routine day every three times in the seven days of political meetings between the emperor and his subordinates.
The family of Duke Hexalios, who took no further interest in the death of the late Duke and Duchess Hexalios, has now shown their faces again after more than a decade.
Does Duke Hexalios have the right to attend this political meeting? Sure oes. The dukedom equivalent to the crown prince or the second person after the emperor, made him have special privileges. Plus, the previous Duke Hexalios was the emperor's adviser and the Duchess Hexalios was the sole younger brother of the late emperor. Their privileges are undisputed.
But after the Hexalios mansion had a young Duke, Hexalios withdrew from politics. The young Duke Hexalios was more interested in the military than in a heated political struggle.
A lot of people don't care about that. Because in the absence of Duke Hexalios in imperial politics, it meant that there was no second person they should be disinclined or respected after the emperor.
Therefore, his presence today after more than ten years was electrifying.
"Greet His Majesty the Duke."
There were only a few people who had the title of Duke in the Elderbar Empire. Most of them are old men and no longer active in the company. Practically, only Duke Hexalios was active as well as her family background was higher than the other dukes.
It was only natural that his presence earned the respect of everyone, even Duke Hexalios was worthy of being aligned with Emperor Elderbar, Alex de Elderbar.
Jordan paid no heed to the greetings of those who stood parallel like an elongated fence. His steps steadily walked across the ocean with the red carpet stretching far on the floor. He took a seat at the very end of the seat, close to the emperor's throne, Alex's chair.
Sounded whispers. But Jordan is indifferent. The goal is not to listen to them. He came for it, meeting with someone who was now standing in the doorway of the meeting hall.
"His Majesty Emperor Elderbar entered the meeting hall!"
The announcement sounded loud and clear. Everyone shut up and stand up. He bowed respectfully with his hands folded in his stomach, except for one man, Duke Jordan Hexalios.
Jordan sat down leisurely with his head held high and looked straight at Alex, the emperor in elu-elukan.
When their gazes met, it wasn't Jordan who was acting less alone, who was shocked. Alex was surprised. Steps ceased. Alex's face hardened.
That clashing look felt hot. The large meeting hall suddenly emptied. Like air being taken out. Everyone present had anticipated this. Given Alex and Jordan's feud, as well as Jordan's alleged plotting an uprising.
One thing they pondered inwardly, "Hopefully get out of the meeting hall without seeing any bloodshed."
