9 O'clock at night
The night had come, but the roadside lights were not on, only darkness was enveloping.
Looking out the window, the motorway had turned into a giant parking lot, with many cars lined up neatly without any owners. Only zombies sometimes pass between the vehicle gaps.
Shen Yuan opened the window slightly. From the moment he got out of the shelter, Xi Zihe never stopped smoking. The air in the front compartment was filled with the scent of nicotine. Yet Shen Yuan did not remind him to stop, only quietly opening the window for Feifei to be able to get some fresh air.
Feifei slept by leaning on him. Sometimes you wake up from a dream and then go back to sleep. Having just recovered from a fever, Feifei was very limp and lethargic. His entire body was enveloped by a lazy aura. So that he will be easily sleepy and sleep longer. Coupled with the exhaustion after escaping, he became easy to fall asleep.
Xi Zihe gripped the steering wheel, with a cigarette already half-living on his lips. His eyes were red, and he did not speak.
Shen Yuan sighed, "Rest. You've been driving since."
Xi Zihe shook his head, "You won't be able to drive this vehicle."
Shen Yuan frowned, puzzled, "It's not me who will replace you. But he's."
Shen Yuan pointed towards the special forces member who was wiping the knife.
Xi Zihe, "Li Yan? Nope, no. You don't know, the last time he brought this vehicle ended up with an RPG show that shattered all the glass."
After the incident, the bulletproof glass present in the armored vehicle finally had to be replaced with ordinary glass. Li Yan, whose specialty Li Yan spoke of was snipers, was simply not talented for off-road.
To bring the survivors, the squads were divided into two. Therefore the members of the army that were inside this armored vehicle were only Xi Zihe and Li Yan, the rest were on the bus.
Shen Yuan finally chose to be quiet and not interfere anymore.
Amidst the silence, a walkie talkie suddenly rang, "Wen Fan to the main vehicle, Wen Fan to the main vehicle! Captain, our transceivers are silent, what about yours?"
Xi Zihe's expression changed slightly, he turned on the transceiver of the armored vehicle.
Static waves are emitted, but in all channels there is only a rustling sound.
Radio waves have lost their signal.
Li Yan seemed to realize there was an oddity, she saw Xi Zihe's expression which turned terrible. Xi Zihe dealt a few blows to the transceiver, switching to a signal for the military base, but the channel seemed to have disappeared. No matter how they adjusted the signal, they could only hear the hopeless silence.
Survivors in the rear compartment also woke up to feel the gripping waves.
Xi Zihe slammed the steering wheel, parking the armored vehicle on the edge of the deserted highway. He took a deep breath and got out of the vehicle.
The bus that followed from behind stopped. The survivors were shocked by the sudden stop. Those who were asleep woke up confused.
Wen Fan, Yao Yue and the rest of the other members also descended. Fatigue was clearly plastered on their faces and could not be hidden.
Xi Zihe did not beat around the bush and went straight to the main point, "We can't connect to the military base."
The rest of the team gathered by the roadside. They looked at each other in panic and fear.
"Nuclear bomb... It seems to have failed." Wen Fan said carefully, "We were informed that the bomb will be launched at 9 p.m. But now fifteen minutes have passed and no sign of being launched yet."
Lu Lin asked, "Is there a change of plans?"
"If there's been a change of plans, the base should've contacted us before this day arrived." Yao Yue denied Lu Lin's thoughts. "In addition, given the failure of this rescue operation, they should have taken the initiative to send another helicopter to save us."
Behind, Shen Yuan had secretly noticed their conversation from beginning to end.
A terrifying thought slowly surfaced into everyone's mind. But no one said it. None of them moved, shut their mouths shut, and hoped that the worst would not exist.
The night of the transition from autumn to winter was very cold and the forest beside them constantly blew out the wind that made the feathers goosebumps.
"Your base, something must have happened there, right?"
Shen Yuan's calm voice came from behind them. They turned their heads and saw Shen Yuan standing leaning against the body of the vehicle with his arms crossed. Beside him, there was Feifei who was rubbing his eyes and yawning, he woke up to the sound of their debate.
"No... That must be impossible, right?" One special forces member rejected the idea.
"Military area C has a very good infrastructure, with a concrete fence surrounding it and when the outbreak of the virus broke out police and military personnel have been largely on guard there. Also the state government, the military officials, and the survivors, are all there..."
Yao Yue's voice gradually faded away. He lowered his head, and whispered, "This should be impossible right..."
Shen Yuan said softly, "That's not impossible. You seem to have forgotten one thing. At any rate, a fortress will be destroyed if it collapses from within. It's possible that a virus outbreak broke out and infected people inside the base. Do you remember, among the helicopter executors there must have been infected, so that everyone on board was infected, which eventually led to today's accident."
Everyone was reminded of the civilians being transported to the military base by four helicopters this afternoon, and could not prevent the cold from creeping on their backs.
Shen Yuan was more mature compared to these special forces members. And he had eaten all the salt acid of life, so when faced with such a desperate situation as this, he could still calm down and maintain his rationality.
Shen Yuan sighed and suggested, "We better rest here first. What I said was just a guess. See if in a few hours your transceiver is still receiving news from the base."
Even though Shen Yuan said that, in everyone's hearts they knew that the worst possibility was not just a possibility, but a fact.
Feifei suddenly grabbed Shen Yuan's clothes, asking her to bow, Shen Yuan followed him without resisting. "Dad, I want to pee." Feifei whispered in Shen Yuan's ear but what he did not expect was that his voice was not small at all and could be heard by all the members of the army.
"Gft-!"
"You want to pee why whisper?" Wen Fan asked amusedly.
Feifei could only squeeze the tip of his clothes in embarrassment. The atmosphere that had been tense, became a little more relaxed.
"Come, come on, jiejie will accompany you." Yao Yue took the initiative to come and clasped Feifei's hand.
From inside the vehicle, Shen Yuan threw a roll of toilet paper, which was instantly caught without looking by Yao Yue.
The two of them walked into the forest until they were not seen again.
