The two brats continued walking, but then they also stopped and looked back to see why their Sunday School teacher was silent at the back.
Trevor paled when he saw Grace clenching both hands on her sides. It was as if Grace was arguing in her heart, and slowly the woman turned around.
Grace walked back to Trevor alone.
"The reason why the two boys roamed the village aimlessly, Lord Trevor, and their mother is very sick. The woman was utterly devastated when she heard her husband died on the battlefield."
Ah, damn it, Trevor thought.
Grace stepped closer towards Trevor with a look of wrath, the avenging angel in a nightgown, her blue eyes flaming with reprimands.
"I'm sorry. I don't know," muttered Trevor.
But it seemed that the woman was already unable to hold her tongue.
"How much did the estate agent tell you about Colonel Avery?" sue Grace.
"The previous Grange owner?" Trevor shrugged, as a defense.
"Not much. He said the man was a cavalry officer, eccentric at his old age."
"Just as I thought. The agent left the most important part." Grace nailed Trevor with her sharp gaze.
"As you know, Colonel Avery was determined to build a regiment out of this place. One hundred men joined him, half of whom were from Thistleton. Ten percent are young, the rest are heads of families."
Trevor closed his eyes, because now he could immediately conclude it.
"Ben Nelcott is one of them" Grace continued.
"The father of the children and the little girl you gave flowers yesterday. The man never came home again. Only a handful of them survived The old man got some of them killed. Avery sells their lives in a 'great fight' against the Monsters, which makes them feel an adventure, which in the end only makes this village destroyed and many families lose their family members, he said, wh-wh-what for? Nothing more than to satisfy his ego."
"I'm sorry, too" muttered Trevor, but Grace ignored him.
"They're both orphans" Grace said once again,
"and if I hear you yelling at those kids once again like that, you can just take my name off your friends list for good."
Grace then leaves Trevor in the silence she thought she wanted so much. Damn, today started off with a bad start and it's getting worse.
Not wanting it to end this way, and also not wanting to humble herself after what she had experienced with another woman, Trevor yelled from behind to ask her a final question.
"What about you, Miss Kenwood?" trevor's tone sounded rougher than he had intended, the result of years spent among the male soldiers.
"Did you also have someone close to you come with the colonel and not come home? Is that why you're still living with your father?"
"I, love a soldier?" Grace turned around, visibly annoyed by Trevor's presumptuous question.
"Of course not. I will never be able to love a man whose livelihood is to kill others."
The way Grace looked into Trevor's eyes as the woman answered made everything clear. Trevor didn't stand a chance with him at all.
Not that he was looking for that opportunity. Right, guys?
Silently, Trevor dropped his gaze.
"Of course not."
Whatever beautiful shadow Trevor had of Grace Kenwood, it was obvious that she could never accept the core of herself, who she was or what she was.
All right then.
Grace grabs each of the twins' hands and walks with them.
When Trevor saw them walking away, leaving him alone, as he had wanted to, he looked back and looked up at the sky.
It was too much to imagine that idea. After all, it seemed like a stupid idea, Trevor said to himself. Grace doesn't even fit in her class. That woman would never be able to enter his world.
Although Trevor actually never fit in either.
Trevor sighed. Ah, nevermind. He wants solitude.
Looks like his wish has really materialized.
