After leaving the Central Police Station, Hazal went to the Prosecutor's Building. In a hurry he got out of his car and climbed a few stairs to get into his study.
His curiosity in the contents of this biscuit can made Hazal ignore Japheth's phone call. The phone rang several times, until it finally stopped ringing.
His hands opened the lid of the biscuit can and poured all its contents onto his desk. A small envelope, a photograph of Nuran and Ali, and a piece of paper splattered on the table. Only three of these things were inside the can. Far from Hazal's estimate.
Hazal took out a small, white envelope that had been sealed with adhesive. At the front of the white envelope was a letter to Nuran and Ali.
"After work, I'll give you this envelope and this photo to Nuran" muttered Hazal who immediately put the white envelope in her bag.
Then he took a white sheet of paper that came from a tearing of a notebook. Behind the two-sheet paper, a very good phoenix sketch was perfectly drawn. Although colorless, only black and white. But it is like a picture of an expert hand. The bird seemed to be truly alive and ready to grip the person in front of it. With a long tail and a large and powerful wingspan.
Very nice picture, what is this picture for Ali? But there's no name on this paper....
Hazal flipped through the paper, not a single piece of information on it other than a sketch of Ted Baxter's hand.
He recalled Mert's message that Ted Baxter asked him to give him a can of these biscuits.
If all this stuff is for Nuran, why didn't he ask Nuran to take it? Why is he looking for me?
He looked back at the inside of the biscuit can, it looked empty. There's nothing else in it. He looked back at the phoenix sketch.
There was something that caught his attention, something that was under the feet of the bird. The foot of the phoenix was gripping something, not resembling a twig or a log.
As far as the phoenix is just a mythology, it doesn't really exist in the world. He's just a bird I've heard in fairy tale books when I was a kid.
Hazal stood up from his seat, walking back and forth in his study. Until finally he stopped in front of a long table on the right side of his room.
On the long dark brown table was a map of his country. With a very large size. The map hangs on the wall. Soon he took a sketch of the bird that was on his desk. Hazal compares the map of his country to something that the phoenix clutches.
"These two forms are exactly the same! Even every curve, everything is the same. Feet of this bird are gripping.., no. no. This bird is not like gripping. But he was holding a map of my country" Hazal murmured.
His eye bead went from a sketch of a phoenix to a map of his country, repeatedly.
The wings of this bird are larger than the image below. Why not in a smaller or similar size picture? A..what this bird means to protect or....
No. nope...
Hazal shook his head.
This phoenix is spreading its wings over the map of my country. What the hell does this mean? I must be wrong, if I thought this picture was for Ali...
Hazal was silent for a moment, he folded his hands and placed them in front of his body. Walking back and forth in his not-so-big study.
On his chair hung his coat of arms on a wall. Hazal smiled at the emblem of the country.
The emblem of my country is not a phoenix. Surely this bird is not the real meaning, this bird is a symbol of something. Yep... Something influential in this country.... It has developed its wings in my country....
Soon he put the sketch into his desk drawer. Hazal opened the door of her room and walked towards her co-worker's room, which was about ten steps away.
"Mustafa, can I borrow the file from suspect Ted Baxter?" hazal asked after he knocked on the door and entered the room of his co-worker.
Mustafa is a public prosecutor who will sue Ted Baxter in court today. He's one level higher than Hazal.
"Why are you interested in the killer?" ask Mustafa while looking for the file in the pile of files on his desk. The prosecutor is not aware of the relationship between Hazal and the late Ted Baxter.
"Ehm. I'm dealing with a case similar to the Ted Baxter case, maybe with that file I can learn about it" Hazal said, standing at the man's desk.
"Well, here we go....!" it was Mustafa who immediately gave the file to Hazal.
"Thank you, Mustafa. I'll give it back to you soon" said Hazal, who then left her coworking space.
Inside her study, Hazal opens a Ted Baxter file. His eyes were wide at the first page of the file. Looks like a small paper, which has been shabby, maybe someone tried to crumple the paper and want to throw it away. The small paper contained sketches of drawings of birds similar to those of Ted Baxter. But the sketch of the image in the file looks not finished perfectly.
"That means this phoenix sketch is Ted Baxter's message to me. He made this for me, not for Ali!" hazal spoke in front of the picture of the bird.
Hazal pressed a few buttons on her phone,
"Hello..," said Mustafa, who answered Hazal's phone call.
"Yes.., what's up? You just make me nervous" Mustafa said, holding his phone.
"Where did you get this sketch of a bird?" hazal asked with one of his hands holding the small paper.
"Oh... You mean the drawing paper in Ted Baxter's file?"
"Yes, the paper that contains the image of a bird."
"The picture paper was already in the file when I received the file from the Police Captain. I thought it was just a picture of a depressed prisoner on the eve of his trial."
After hearing Mustafa's explanation, Hazal immediately hung up on him. He took both pictures and put them in a Ted Baxter file. He took the keys to his car, he ran out to his car. In a hurry, he drove his car at high speed towards the Central Police Station.
Near lunchtime, Hazal arrived at the Central Police Station. But he had to wait a few minutes, because Captain Ismail was not in his study. The young captain was on duty outside.
An hour passed, Hazal was still waiting for the Captain in front of his study. The young prosecutor just sat pensively on a long bench made of wood.
"Worker Hazal." said Captain Ismail, who saw Hazal sitting in front of his study.
Hazal immediately stood up as soon as he heard the captain's greeting.
"What are you doing here?" ask Captain Ismail who was standing in front of Hazal, then he unlocked the door of his study.
"There's something I want to ask you, Captain," replied Hazal, who followed the steps of this police captain to enter his study.
Captain Ishmael invited Hazal to sit down. "What do you want to ask, Attorney Hazal?" The captain pulled up his chair, and sat down to face Hazal.
"Don't call me Prosecutor Hazal, you better just call me by name" Hazal's pinta put Ted's file on the table.
"As for me, call me Ismail" replied the Captain, smiling in front of Hazal.
"All right...." Hazal returns the Captain's smile, a sweet smile from a beautiful young prosecutor.
"I wonder where you got this sketch?" Hazal shows an unfinished picture of Ted Baxter.
Captain Ismail recounted from the beginning, when Ted Baxter was interrogated for the first time, then he asked for paper and pen, and began drawing. Until the incident occurs, Ted puts the questioner in the hands of the Captain.
"Maybe this is what makes this picture unfinished" said Hazal, who tried to draw conclusions from the whole thing.
"Do you seem interested in that picture?"
Hazal just nodded his head, then he took a sketch of another bird, and showed it to Captain Ismail.
"Before he died, Ted Baxter redrawed the sketch of this bird. He told his friend who was in prison, to give me this picture" Hazal explained.
Captain Ismail took two papers from Hazal's hand. The man looked at the sketch.
"I think he wants to play a puzzle with you" said the Captain, who put the two papers back on the table.
"Yes.a very complicated puzzle."
"Did you manage to crack it?"
"Unfortunately I have not asked you this. I'll go back to my office again, thanks for your help, Ismail" said Hazal, extending his hand.
"If you need my help, you can find me. I'd be very happy to help you, Hazal" the Captain replied with a smile and returned Hazal's hand.
Captain Ismail escorted Hazal to the exit of the Police Station. The young captain kept staring at Hazal's departure, until the young prosecutor got into the car.
"Just this time, I saw the Captain escorting a woman to the exit. Could it be that the young prosecutor has disturbed your heart, Captain?" seduced one of his men who saw Captain Ismail looking at Hazal with a smile.
"What did you say? Get back to work!" exclaimed the Captain with his face blushed in shame.
