Ellie takes Matthew to where John is. The scene Matthew saw for the first time was John devouring the thigh of a four-legged monster. The monster is cooked in a way swirled over the coals of fire.

Instead of giving gifts to John, Simon felt better he showed his good intentions by giving gifts to the two children. It's nothing but Simon is convinced his collection doesn't mean anything to John.
