Troops were being mobilized, they were moving in response to an emergency signal coming from a town about thirty minutes from the western defensive outpost.
Of course that's what happens if the carriage used is pulled using a horse, but this time Julie brought two strange animals with shapes such as a blend of horses and rhinos.
At first the commander of the defense post was a little skeptical when Julie offered the animal to replace the horse, as it was a type of animal they had never seen before, but he finally agreed and he did not regret his decision after seeing the results he saw.
The two carriages pulled by one animal each went at twice the speed of the two-horse-drawn carriage.
Thanks to that, relief forces could reach the city sending emergency signals in a shorter time.
By the time they arrived, the city's defense forces were still able to defend the fortress from demonic attacks, something that was rare when the city was located far from the defensive outpost.
They quickly turned things around, the demon that was wedged from the two was defeated more easily.
Although there were strong demons like the armor demon and the crawling demon that had monstrous forms and nimble movements, but Gilbert who had the most powerful physique and Aura among them as well as great fighting skills was able to suppress the demon armor until finally the demon fell down after receiving a huge magic output attack from Dustin.
The crawling demon could be overcome by Alex, because in addition to his terrible form and agile movements, this demon was basically just a distraction and did not become a big threat. When other demons had already fallen, then defeating these kinds of demons was an easy matter.
The battle ended in victory, the casualties on the side of the city's defense forces were not very large, and there were no casualties at all in the unit led by Alex.
After clearing the bodies of the demons and burning them, Alex and his unit prepared to return to the defense post.
That's how it's supposed to be.
As they were preparing to return, suddenly from a distance a row of armored troops appeared, they thought it was originally a group of troops from another city, they thought, but it's strange because they shouldn't be here.
But as their distance neared, it was seen that the group of armored soldiers were not humans, but a fully armed undead army.
"EVACUATION OF THE TOWN! IT'S A FOLLOW-UP ATTACK!" The commander of the city defense forces gave orders to his troops.
The commander approached Alex's unit. "I'm sorry, it looks like you're forced to fight once again."
Alex laughed at the commander's words. "They are a bunch of humans who have been driven mad by war, moments like this they have been waiting for. Anyway, we have to clear the way to get home."
The commander nodded and pat Alex on the shoulder, then he rushed towards the ranks of his troops and mobilized them.
"It seems like my hope of returning without losing a single person would be hard to materialize." Alex looked at his army.
"Hey, new captain. You just said we're people who've been driven mad by war, shouldn't a madman be cleaned up right away?" Gilbert's words were met with laughter from Alex's other soldiers.
Alex grinned, he activated his power, fireballs formed around him and instantly shot towards the incoming hordes of demons, explosion after explosion followed.
"The dead must buy everyone a drink tonight." Alex Exclamations. "That's how crazy people are supposed to deal with death." Reply Tristan.
The defensive line troops reinforced by Alex's units unsheathed their respective weapons, clashing with the army of the undead demons was inevitable again.
"RAH!" Gilbert slashed his sword at one of the most powerful-looking undead demons, but the creature swiftly raised its shield and repelled Gilbert's attack. The creature's eye cavity emitted a dark blue glow, staring at Gilbert intently.
Gilbert was momentarily stunned to see that, but he then grinned and re-launched a follow-up attack, the demon also advanced with the unsheathed sword, their fight running quite fiercely. But Gilbert still benefited more because his power was greater than that of the creature.
On the other hand, Tristan was incessantly attacking the demons with his two axes, although they put up a fierce resistance, but Tristan was still able to knock them down even though he was also not spared from being injured.
Alex also continued to shower the creature with stone bullets, as the power of the stone shot was immense, the arms of several demons who managed to resist Alex's attack with shields instantly detached after their bodies bounced backwards.
Defense soldiers were also no less violent with the creature, those who had faced the devil many times with a strange form were no longer surprised to see corpses running around carrying weapons.
Soul casualties remained inevitable, those demons were indeed not as strong as giant demons or other demons, but they had the same fighting ability as ordinary soldiers, when the soldiers were off guard just a little, his life could instantly float.
Gilbert who was dueling with undead warriors began to dominate the fight, he managed to create a gap and cut off the arm that held the shield even though he had to be hit by a deep enough puncture wound on his arm. But he managed to knock the creature down after decapitating its head.
The remaining demon army was slightly soon finished off by another soldier, the wounded Gilbert still fiercely lunged at the demon ranks, further boosting the morale of the defensive forces, and so on, moreover, Alex's undifferentiated attacks managed to slow down the demons' attacks and reduce their numbers drastically.
In less than thirty minutes, the battle ended in victory on the part of the defense forces.
After the battle ended, the bodies of the living corpses slowly turned into black ashes and left behind bones wrapped in tunics and armor.
Their bones were soon collected and Alex burned them to the ground, and the armour they used was collected in one place and consecrated by the clergy before being buried outside the city fortress. They do not want to risk being cursed by wearing the armor used by the devil.
There were not many fatalities from Alex's unit, they were transported to a small-sized carriage that would later be linked and pulled by a horse carriage.
Alex and his unit did not leave immediately, they decided to wait for a while, just in case the demons were back to make a follow-up attack. During the wait, they made a bonfire outside the fort.
"This is the first time that two waves have occurred at a time." The commander of the defense forces opened the conversation.
"Indeed, before something like this had never happened, moreover it was a type of demon that had never appeared before." Alex responded.
Indeed, after a certain period of time, the demons became stronger and their types increased, no matter what the demons looked like in the next few months.
"It seems that we have no hope, I feel that the demons are playing tricks on us." The commander named Larry spoke again, the soldier who heard him fell silent, the commander's words had a point.
"But the gods help us by endowing the chosen with the power of light, won't we eventually win?" Wilman seems to disagree with Larry.
Gilbert grunts. "If they were indeed intent on helping, they should have descended on themselves and finished off all those demons at once. Who knows, maybe the gods are playing us."
Wilman's face turned red, he seemed to not accept the words of Gilbert, his mother was a religious leader, so it was natural that he was a little religious.
"There's no way they're ignoring us! If non-believers like you still exist in the world, they might help us for free."
Gilbert shrugged unconcernedly and continued sucking his cigar, but Wilman's gaze was not once diverted from Gilbert, a fight could happen at any time if the situation continued this way. Fortunately, Tristan immediately calmed Wilman down and offered him a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
"Athheists like him don't make a fuss, you're tired of yourself." Tristan said as he blinked repeatedly at Gilbert, he just snorted unconcernedly. The commotion was prevented.
They then went back on some topics until late in the afternoon, as there seemed to be no sign of any further attacks from the demons, Alex's unit immediately prepared to return to the defensive post.
Upon their arrival at the defensive post, Alex felt that the barracks were a little empty, he asked one of the soldiers who looked new.
"Some time after you were dispatched, another emergency signal was fired and another unit was dispatched, senior Julie was included in that unit."
Alex was speechless, something like this was unprecedented, deserved he lately felt that the war was a little monotonous, it turned out that a big storm seemed to be in preparation.
He rushes to the commander's office and reports on events during the mission, hoping Julie will return alive as this is the first time he has been deployed to the battlefield.
