The Regreg War or Paregreg is a major war that occurred in the Majapahit kingdom, the western palace led by Wikramawardhana against the eastern palace led by Bhre Wirabhumi. The war lasted from 1404 to 1406. The Regreg War was one of the reasons for the decline of the Majapahit kingdom at that time, where Majapahit subordinate kingdoms began to dare
break away. Like Tanjung Pura and Brunei on the island of Tanjung Pura, or also known as Bakalapura at that time, as well as the Kingdom of Palembang, the Kingdom of Malay and the Kingdom of Malacca.
Majapahit Kingdom itself was established in 1293 AD due to the cooperation of Raden Wijaya and Arya Wiraraja, took Singasari power from the Mongols. In 1295 AD, Raden Wijaya divided the Majapahit region to keep his promise to Arya Wiraraja during the first struggle to achieve success. To the east, the territory was given to Arya Wiraraja with the capital in an area called Lumajang.
Unfortunately, there was a rebellion in 1316 AD led by Mpu Nambi who was originally the first rakyan patih Majapahit and fought to build Majapahit. Mpu Nambi is a victim of vile slander so he had to fight in Lumajang. After his resistance was crushed Jayanagara son of Raden Wijaya and Mpu Nambi was killed, the eastern region of Majapahit was reunited with the western region.
However, in 1376, a new kingdom re-emerged in the eastern region, an eastern palace in Pamotan. The two Majapahit kingdoms in the west are controlled by Hayam Wuruk, while in the east are controlled by Bhre Wengker or known as Wijayarajasa. He was the husband of Rajadevi, the younger brother of Tribhuwana Tunggadewi who was the mother of Hayam Wuruk. Wijayarajasa himself does have the desire and lust to be king. The eastern palace in Pamotan was built after Patih Gajahmada, Tribhuwana Tunggadewi and his own wife, Rajadevi died.
During the reign of Hayam Wuruk and Wijayarajasa, the relationship between the two palaces, west and east, was still overwhelmed with disdain. Obviously because Wijayarajasa is Hayam Wuruk's in-law. When Wijayarajasa died in 1398, he was succeeded by his adopted son and grandson's husband, Bhre Wirabhumi, as king of the eastern court. Hayam Wuruk, who died in 1389, was succeeded by his nephew and son-in-law, Wikramawardhana.
Tensions arose when Bhre Lasem was given to Bhre Wirabumi's daughter Nagarawardhani, and Wikramawardhana himself appointed Kusumawardhani, his wife, as Bhre Lasem. There are two Bhre Lasem, namely Bhre Lasem Sang Halemu or the Fat Bhre Lasem and the Beautiful Bhre Lasem Sang Ahayu or Bhre Lasem.
A cold war occurred between the western and eastern palaces, even until both died in 1400 AD. This opportunity was used by Wikrawardhana to appoint his own son-in-law as the new Bhre Lasem, namely Bhre Tumapel. At this time Bhre Wirabhumi and Wikramawardhana quarreled in 1401 AD then did not greet each other.War then erupted in 1404 AD. This war is called Regreg, which means a step-by-step war at a slow pace. Even the winner was changed from the east and west.
The end of the war was completed in 1406 A. D. where Bhre Tumapel of the western court attacked with his soldiers into the eastern kingdom. Bhre Wirabhumi suffered defeat and fled by boat at night but was chased and killed by Raden Gajah or Bhra Narapati who had the post of Queen of Angabhaya in the western palace. Raden Gajah brought Bhre Wirabhumi's head to the western palace.
This eastern palace is the forerunner of the Blambangan kingdom in the eastern region of Majapahit. During the Regreg war, the soft sword became very famous. Both kingdoms in the western and eastern regions both use soft swords in the war.
Majapahit Kingdom which is clever in various battles using a soft sword with poison and the power of users who are also qualified. The Blambangan army, or the eastern palace at that time, certainly did not want to lose. Luwuk with the sun's divisive prestige made use of his army's swift and precise silat abilities. The sword which is shorter than the Majapahit chic, or western palace, can be used with deceptive moves. In many battles, Blambangan troops won against Majapahit forces because of their shrewdness. Only, one of the weaknesses of the Blambangan soft sword compared to the Majapahit soft sword is in its length and size.
“Kakang Sudiamara? Really it was you, Kakang?” almira came back to convince.
“Well, this is true me, nduk. I told you that I know you to these lowly brutes. But they turned out to choose to die,” said the unknown figure who indeed turned out to be Sudiamara.
“Already, already, Koncar. This guy I know very well. He used to serve as the leader of my family's guard in Blambangan. Same with you, Koncar,”, Almira told the leader of the guard soldiers named Koncar.
Koncar took a breath. A feeling of relief because there is no need to return to fight with an opponent who turns out to be recognized as greater than him, while being annoyed not to continue the fight at the same time. Koncar obviously did not like the behavior of the opponent that is not polite. Anyway, he jutted towards Almira, “Good, Nyai. Forgive me for misunderstanding,” he said more to Almira than Sudiamara.
“Ah, it is a pity that I have to re-sheathe this softukku,” Sudiamara said mockingly as he glanced at Koncar who posed no care or offense. Koncar retaliated by turning around and ordering the guard soldiers to return to their respective guard places.
All the soldiers immediately carried out the orders of their leader. They had the same annoyance as Koncar. Koncar himself had put his dagger back into the sheath, grabbed the spear and shield and no longer looked back at Sudiamara, rather than his heart getting hurt again. “The brash Blambangan people,” Koncar growled in the heart. Koncar is from Mataram, Kota Gede to be exact. Perhaps understandable even though he is not a royal soldier and only a swordsman who works as a mercenary soldier, his Mataram blood is slightly affected by the mindset of the Mataram people against Blambangan who have just been subdued.
“Mari, brother Sudiamara please come in. Sorry for the misunderstanding and reception of this inappropriate guest,”, Almira said.
Sudiamara turned to Almira. “Ah, nduk-fr. I was wrong too. Indeed my innate roughness and brangasan like this always brings trouble everywhere. I should apologize to you, nduk,” Sudiamara said softly.
“The back, I'm not your own anymore. Our relationship is more than just masters and subordinates now. You are my own brother,” said Almira sumringah. He was happy that this old man he had not met suddenly came to see you. If only Almira realized that the arrival of Sudiamara from the east was not just a guest, but also gave less exciting news and changed many things in the life of the beautiful woman of Arab descent.
