The word comes from the Javanese language, and all three have the same meaning that is mountain; so it can be interpreted as three mountains. This is in line with the fact that Mount Lawu does have three large peaks namely Hargo Dalem, Hargo Dumiling, and Hargo Dumilah.


The names of the mountain peaks are most likely sourced from the Centhini Fiber, which mentions that Mount Lawu has fifteen peaks. To the south, there are seven peaks namely Hargo Dalem, Dumilah, Pethapralaya, Mayang, Cakrakembang, Tenjomaya, and Kepanasan. Meanwhile, in the north there are eight peaks namely Hargo Tiling, Pekareman, Sadewa, Pamenang, Candhirenggo, Bayu, Rimbi, and Kalithi. In Centhini Fiber, only Hargo Dumiling is not mentioned.


The name is a modification of Hargo Tiling. This estimate is supported by its equally flat peak in the northern part of Mount Lawu.


Poerbatjaraka mentions that the original name of Mount Lawu is Katong which means god. The name is written in Tantu Panggelaran. Mount Katong is part of the ruins of Mount Mahameru when it was carried by the gods through the skies of Java Island.


Other ruins became Mount Wilis, Kamput, Kawi, Arjuno, and Kemukus. According to Poerbatjaraka, Mount Katong is identified with Mount Lawu.


In other words, Mount Katong is the ancient name for Mount Lawu. According to Zoetmulder the meaning of the word katong is god, respect, reverence, and admiration. Meanwhile, the word lawu means supreme and superior.


The meaning of the two words both contain the meaning of admiration; so that even though the name is changed, it does not shift the meaning contained in it. In addition to the Centhini Fiber, the name Lawu is also mentioned in the Manikmaya Fiber.


The fiber was written in 1794 AD, whose contents have similarities with Tantu Panggelaran. However, the thing that distinguishes is Manikmaya Fiber written in New Java.


That said, Mount Lawu is part of eighteen sacred mountains in Central Java. It is likely that the mandalas are located in the mountains where the literary work was made.


The older literary work is Babad Tanah Jawi. In the book, Mount Lawu is referred to as the last moksa place Prabu Brawijaya which has another name, Sunan Gunung Lawu.


Myths that developed in the community stated that he did moksha in Pringgodani hermitage. This statement is an indication that until the time of writing the Babad Tanah Jawi, which is during the Islamic Mataram period, Mount Lawu is still seen as a holy place.


At least, it is a mountain that is considered valuable by Hindus. The oldest manuscript is Bhujangga Manik. Mount Lawu is also called when Bhujangga Manik traveled from Sunda to Majapahit and Bali.


Mount Lawu in Central Java is also one of the most haunted mountains in Indonesia. That is because it is known that the mountain becomes a place for fine creatures to gather called ‘pasar satan’ which is said to be able to visit humans.


There is also a location called Bulak Wargan where at this location many climbers who often hear noise such as war. The climbers must focus and should not be scattered because if lost maybe the climber will go home just name it.


It is said that Mount Lawu is the center of spiritual activities in the land of Java and is closely related to the tradition and culture of Mangkunegaran Praja. Everyone who wants to go to the top must understand the various unwritten prohibitions not to do something, both in action and word.

Other places that are believed to be mysterious by locals include: Sendang Inten, Sendang Drajat, Sendang Panguripan, Well of Jalatunda, Candradimuka Crater, Repat Kepanasan/Cakrasurya, and Pringgodani.

Because Kiyongko's creature did not attack Rama and Gendoruwo, Rama simply nodded his head and continued the journey. Then in the sky also appeared a starling bird that circled above Rama and Gendoruwo during the trip to the Peak.


Rama and Gendoruwo who saw the appearance of starlings just smile and assume the starlings do not mean evil so they immediately continue the journey. Rama and Gendoruwo must reach the summit of Mount Lawu before midnight of the full moon.


After Rama and Gendoruwo walked through Hargo Dalem which is at an altitude of 3,142 meters above sea level, they had seen Hargo Dumilah Peak, as Mount Lawu Peak. Samar - faint Rama saw a fire running on Mount Lawu Peak like the ghost of Kemamang who was being followed by Rama.
