"Assalamualaikum Abi Umi Sorry Zahra is late" zahra said to his parents and he sat down immediately to pick up the dishes and food that had been provided Umi Aini now only the sound of clanking spoons and forks were heard. Dinner is over Zahra helped Umi Aini to finish cleaning Zahra and Umi Aini to the living room following Abi Ridho who had been busy watching TV..

Zahra immediately went upstairs to sleep but before going to bed he took ablution first...

There is a hadith that shows that we are encouraged to go to bed before going to bed. Among them, hadith from Al-Barra’ bin Azib radhiyallahu ‘anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

إِذَا أَتَيْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ فَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَكَ لِلصَّلَاةِ ، ثُمَّ اضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّكَ الْأَيْمَنِ ، ثُمَّ قُلْ : اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ ، اللَّهُمَّ آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ ؛ فَإِنْ مُتَّ مِنْ لَيْلَتِكَ فَأَنْتَ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ ، وَاجْعَلْهُنَّ آخِرَ مَا تَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ

“When you want to sleep, worship as ablution when you want to pray. Then lie on your right side, and read

اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ ، اللَّهُمَّ آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ

O God, I bow my face to Thee, I give My business unto Thee, I lay my back upon Thee, out of fear and iniquity unto Thee. There is no refuge and escape from Your punishment except to You. O Allah, I believe in Your Book which You have sent down, and in Your prophet whom You have sent.

If you die that night, you die in a fitrah state. Make it that prayer, as the last sentence you say before going to bed.”

(CHR. Bukhari 247 and Muslim 2710)

Praying Angel

In another hadith, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam mentions the primacy of ablution before going to bed. He who abides before going to sleep will be prayed for by angels.

From Abdullah bin Umar radliyallaahu ‘anhu, that Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

مَنْ بَاتَ طَاهِرًا، بَاتَ فِي شِعَارِهِ مَلَكٌ، فَلَمْ يَسْتَيْقِظْ إِلَّا قَالَ الْمَلَكُ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِعَبْدِكَ فُلَانٍ، فَإِنَّهُ بَاتَ طَاهِرًا

“Whoever sleeps in a holy state, the angels will be with him in his clothes. He will not wake up until the angel prays ‘Yes Allah, forgive your servant the fulan for sleeping in a holy state.'”(HR. Ibn Hibban 3/329. Shuaib Al-Arnauth said, This narrator of hadith includes the narrator of the book of shahih. This hadith is also rated shahih by Al-Albani in Shahih At Targhib wat Tarhib I/37)

Al-Hafidz Ibn Hajar explains some of the benefits of ablution before going to sleep,

وَلَهُ فَوَائِد : مِنْهَا أَنْ يَبِيت عَلَى طَهَارَة لِئَلَّا يَبْغَتهُ الْمَوْت فَيَكُون عَلَى هَيْئَة كَامِلَة , وَيُؤْخَذ مِنْهُ النَّدْب إِلَى الِاسْتِعْدَاد لِلْمَوْتِ بِطَهَارَةِ الْقَلْب لِأَنَّهُ أَوْلَى مِنْ طَهَارَة الْبَدَن .. ، وَيَتَأَكَّد ذَلِكَ فِي حَقّ الْمُحْدِث وَلَا سِيَّمَا الْجُنُب وَهُوَ أَنْشَط لِلْعَوْدِ , وَقَدْ يَكُون مُنَشِّطًا لِلْغُسْلِ ، فَيَبِيت عَلَى طَهَارَة كَامِلَة . وَمِنْهَا أَنْ يَكُون أَصْدَق لِرُؤْيَاهُ وَأَبْعَد مِنْ تَلَعُّب الشَّيْطَان بِهِ

There are many benefits of ablution before going to bed, among them, the person sleeps in a sacred condition, so that when death picks him up, he is in a perfect state. From this hadith there is also a lesson so that we always prepare ourselves to face death, by purifying the heart. Because the purity of the heart takes precedence over the purity of the body.., it is more emphasized again for people who are struggling, especially junub people, in order to be fresh kemabli or trigger to bathe. So that he can sleep the holy of all hadats. Then, among the benefits of this ablution, to invite good dreams, and be kept away from the game of demons while sleeping. (Fathul Bari, 11/110)
