Snake Princess

Simalungun is the name of a district in North Sumatra. Before the expansion of the capital Pematang Siantar, now Simalungun its capital Pematang Raya, while Pematang Siantar status became a middle town. Simalungun is also the name of the original tribe that inhabited the area. But now the Simalungun regency community has consisted of multi tribes/ethnic, such as Toba batak, Karo batak, Mandiling, Minang, Aceh, Java, Chinese.

Simalungun Regency has a variety of traditional heritage, one of which is folklore. In this area, there is a very famous folklore, namely the Story of the Serpent Princess. This story tells of the failure of a beautiful princess to be made empress by a handsome young king, because the princess suddenly transformed into a snake.

Once upon a time, in a country in the Simalungun region, North Sumatra, there was a kingdom led by a wise and wise king. The King had a daughter whose beauty was extraordinary. News about the beauty of the king's daughter spread to various corners of the country. The news was also heard by a young king who ruled in a kingdom not far from the kingdom of the Princess' father.

Hearing the news, the handsome Young King intends to propose to the Princess. The King then gathered royal advisers to pique his will. 

“Gee, my advisors Have you heard the beauty news of the princess?” ask the king to his advisor.

“Already, Tuan” replied the advisers hoarsely.

“What do you think, if the princess I make as empress?” the King asked again.

“Hamba agrees, Tuan” replied one of the advisors.

“Yes, Mr. Servant I think, The Lord and the Princess are a very compatible couple. The master of a handsome young king, while the daughter of a beautiful girl,” added an advisor.

“Alright then. Immediately prepare everything necessary to propose the princess,” orders of the king.

“Good, Sire” answer all advisors simultaneously.

The next day, a group of young king's emissaries left the palace for the country where the princess lived. Arriving there, they were welcomed and well-groomed by the princess' father. After the banquet, the viceroy of the young king conveyed the intention of their arrival.

“Ammun, Sire The point of our arrival here is to convey the proposal of our King,” replied one of the envoys who acted as a spokesman.

“We accept your King's proposal with pleasure, because the two kingdoms will unite to realize a prosperous, peaceful and prosperous society,” replied the king.

“Thank you, Sire This glad news is soon to be conveyed to our King. However..., our King advised that if this proposal is accepted the marriage will take place in two months,” said the envoy.

“Why is it so long?” the king asked impatiently.

“King we want his wedding to take place on a massive basis,” replied the envoy.

“Alright then, we are ready to wait,” replied the King.

After deliberating, the Viceroy said goodbye to the King to return to their country. Upon their arrival, they immediately reported the glad tidings to their King, that his proposal was received. The Young King was overjoyed to hear the news.

“Then, from now on we have to prepare everything necessary for this wedding ceremony” exclaimed Raja Muda.

“Alright, Sir Immediately we work on,” replied a messenger.

Meanwhile, after the Young King's emissaries returned to their country, the Princess' father met his daughter and delivered the suggestion.

“Okay, my daughter Do you know what the messengers came for?” ask the king to his daughter.

“No, dad What's up, yeah?” the princess asked back.

“Behold, my daughter, they have come here to deliver their young king's proposal. What say?” ask the Father.

“If father is happy, daughter is willing,” replied the Princess timidly.

“Daughter, take care of yourself Don't let anything happen that can cancel your marriage,” added the father.

“Good, father” replied the princess.

On the eve of her wedding day, as usual, every morning the princess went to bathe accompanied by some of her ladies-in-waiting in a pond that was behind the palace. At the edge of the pool was prepared a large stone for the princess' seat. After changing clothes, the princess immediately went into the pool soaking for a moment to cool her entire body.

After a while of soaking, the princess sat on a rock by the pool. While dangling her feet into the water, the princess imagined how happy she would be at the wedding, sitting side by side with her husband, a dashing and handsome Young King.

In the midst of the princess was engrossed in daydreaming and enjoying the coolness of the pool water, suddenly the wind blew. Unexpectedly, a dried tree branch suddenly fell right on the tip of the princess's nose.

“Aduuuh, my nose” screams the princess while holding her nose.

In an instant, the poor princess' hands were filled with blood. While enduring the pain, the princess told her ladies to get a mirror. How shocked and disappointed the princess was when she saw her face in the mirror. His nose that was originally sharp suddenly became sompel (lost partially) hit by tree branches with sharp edges. Now the princess's face is no longer as beautiful as before. He was very sad and his tears were pouring out of his eyelids.

“My marriage with the young king will fail. He would definitely look for another princess who had no disabilities. If I fail to marry the young king, father and mother must be disappointed and ashamed before his people,” thought the princess.

The princess was very depressed. Those thoughts kept raging in his head. His heart was even more confused. He did not want to embarrass and disappoint his parents. However, he was unable to overcome the problems he was facing. He could do nothing else but regret his unfortunate fate.

The princess was desperate. Crying, he lifted his hands up and prayed:

“Yes, Lord bless your servant who has embarrassed and disappointed his parents” the princess prayed with teary eyes.

Just now that the prayer was spoken from the mouth of the princess, suddenly lightning struck as a sign of the princess' prayer heard by God. Moments later, the princess' body underwent a very surprising change. His smooth white feet suddenly let out scales. The scales are getting upwards. Her parents were shocked when they saw the event. When the scales reached the chest, the princess immediately ordered a lady-in-waiting to tell her father and mother inside the palace.

“Ampun, Tuan” salute the lady-in-waiting to the king.

“What's up, ladies-in-waiting?” ask the king.

“Although, Mr. Leather the princess pulled out scales like a snake,” reported the ladyboy.

“What…? My son took out the scales” asked the king in shock.

“True, Mr. Servant himself does not know why it can happen,” replied the lady.

Upon hearing the report, the king and empress immediately headed to the bath pool. Arriving at that place, they already did not see the body of the princess. What appeared was only a large snake coiled on a stone that the princess used to sit.

“My daughter” exclaimed the king to the snake.

The snake could only move its head and stick out its tongue with its glaring eyes. He was about to speak, but not a single word came from his mouth.

“My daughter What happened to you?” ask the queen worried.

Even though the empress had shouted out to him, the snake still could not say anything. Soon, the great snake of the princess' incarnation left them and went into the thicket. The king and the queen and the ladies could do nothing. They were very sad and wept over the unfortunate fate that befell the princess.

The incarnation of the princess into a serpent was the punishment of the Powerful at her own request, for her despair. He was desperate for fear of embarrassment and disappointment to his parents.

He did not manage to keep his father's trust to always take care of himself so that nothing happened that could cancel his marriage to the handsome Young King.
