In ancient times in a fishing village of Air Manis Beach in the Padang area, West Sumatra lived a widow named Mande Rubayah with a son named Malin Kundang. Mande Rubayah is very loving and pampering Malin Kundang. Malin was a diligent and obedient child.
Mande Rubayah is old, she is only able to work as a cake seller to meet the needs of her and her only child. One day, Malin was sick. Very hard pain, his life almost drifted but finally he could be saved - thanks to his mother's hard work. After recovering from his illness he became more loved. They are mothers and children who love each other. Now, Malin was an adult he asked his mother for permission to go to the city, because at that time there was a large ship docked at Air Manis Beach.
“Don't Malin, I'm afraid something happened to you on the land of the region. Just stay here, accompany mother,” said her mother was sad after hearing the desire of Malin who wants to wander.
“Mother calm down, nothing will happen to me,” Malin said as he clasped his mother's hand. “This is a chance Mom, because not necessarily once a year there is a large ship docked on this beach. I want to change our fate Ma'am, let” pinta Malin beg.
“Alright, mom allow. Hurry back, mom will always be waiting for you son,” said her mother in tears. Although with a heavy heart, Mande Rubayah finally allowed her son to leave. Then Malin is equipped with rice wrapped in banana leaves as much as seven packs, “For your provisions on the trip,” he said while handing it to Malin. Afterwards Malin Kundang to the land of the region left his mother alone.
The days went on, days that felt slow for Mande Rubayah. Every morning and evening Mande Rubayah looks out to sea, “Where have you sailed Nak?” ask in the heart while continuing to look at the sea. la always mendo’ his son to always be safe and quickly returned.
Some time later if there is a ship that comes docked he always asks the news about his son. “Did you guys see my son, Malin? Is she okay? When does he come home?” tanyakanya. But every time he asked the crew or the captain never got an answer. Malin never left any items or messages to his mother.
For years Mande Rubayah kept asking but there was never an answer until her body got older, now her path began to bend. One day Mande Rubayah got news from the skipper used to bring Malin, the captain gave happy news to Mande Rubayah.
“Mande, you know, your son is now married to a beautiful girl, the daughter of a very rich noble,” he said at the time.
Mande Rubayah was very happy to hear that, she always prayed for her son to be safe and soon came back to see him, the rays of joy began to reach him again. But for months since he received news from the captain Malin, Malin never returned to see him.
When the ship began to dock, a pair of young people stood on the bridge. Their clothes are exposed to sunlight. Their faces were brightly decorated with smiles as they were happily greeted with great fanfare. Mande Rubayah also rushed to the ship. His heart thumped hard when he saw the young man on the ship, he was very sure that the young man was his son, Malin Kundang. Not yet had time for the village elders to welcome, Malin's mother first approached Malin. la immediately hugged him tightly, she was afraid of losing her child again.
“Malin, son. You're my son, right?” he said holding back sobs of joy, “Why so long have you not told?”
Malin was surprised to be hugged by the old woman who was dressed in tattered—camping. He could not believe that this woman was his mother. Before he could even think of speaking, his beautiful wife spat while saying, “This ugly woman is your mother? Why did you lie to me!” he said cynically, “Didn't you say that your mother was a noble like me?!”
Hearing the spicy words of his wife, Malin Kundang immediately pushed his mother to roll into the sand, “Crazy woman! I'm not your son!” said rough.
Mande Rubayah did not believe in her son's behavior, she fell down while saying, “Malin, Malin, my son. I'm your mother, son! Why are you being like this, son?!” Malin Kundang did not care what his mother said. He would not admit his mother.he was ashamed of his wife. Seeing the woman shuffling about to hug her feet, Malin kicked her while saying, “Hai, mad woman! the book is not like you! Lying and dirty!” The old woman was lying in the sand, crying, and hurt.
The people who saw him were stunned and then went home to each other. Mande Rubayah collapsed and lay alone. When he realized, the Sweet Water Beach was deserted. The Malin ship is getting further away. He did not expect Malin who used to be loved to do so. His heart ached and hurt, and his hand was thrust into the sky.
He then prayed with his heart, “Yes, Lord, if indeed he is not my son, I am sorry for his actions. But if he's really my son, Malin Kundang, I beg for your justice, O Lord!” he said it while crying. Shortly thereafter the weather in the middle of the sea that had been bright, suddenly turned dark. The rain suddenly fell heavily. Suddenly a great storm came, hitting the ship Malin Kundang. Laiu a thunderous lightning strike. At that time the ship was also broken into pieces. Then carried the waves to the beach.
The next morning when the morning sun appeared on the eastern horizon, the storm had subsided. At the foot of the hill are seen pieces of the ship that have become stone. That's Malin Kundang's ship! A stone that resembles a human body. That's the body of Malin Kundang a disobedient child who was cursed by his mother to become a stone because he had been disobedient. On the sidelines of the stone were swimming anchovies, starfish, and tengiri fish. That said, the fish came from the splinters of the wife's body who continued to look for Malin Kundang.
Until now if there are big waves hit the rocks that look like ships and humans, sound like the howl of human screams, sometimes it sounds like people wailing regretfully, “Ampun, Mom…! Ampuun!” it is said that the voice of Malin Kundang, a child who disobeyed his mother.
