Long ago, there was a kingdom called Pagaruyung. King Pagaruyung was a wise and just leader. One day, news was heard that the Majapahit Kingdom of Java would attack the Pagaruyung Kingdom. Majapahit Kingdom troops began to arrive and settle in the border area to arrange a strategy to seize the safe and terhamam kingdom.

King Pagaruyung gathers hulubalangs and warlords to negotiate.

“I gather you to talk about how we will take in the face of the Majapahit Kingdom troops. Right now, they were already at the border and were ready to attack. What do you think?" said The King.

"Paduka, we cannot carry out attacks that will cause the misery of the people. Either way the war will harm our own people" said the King's adviser.

"I agree. We must think of a way to defeat them without having to make the people miserable.” said the King.

"Open, we'd better get them to negotiate and ask them to leave this government. If by negotiating it turns out not to solve the problem, we challenge them to buffalo fight!" said the warlord.

The king agreed with the opinion of the warlord. Then they started to make plans. The king ordered his daughter, Datuk Tantejo Gerhano, to go to the border. Datuk Tantejo Gerhano is a girl who has a high and gentle karmic system. Before leaving, he dressed the girls and ladies who would accompany him.

At the border, Datuk Tantejo Gerhano approached the tents of the Majapahit Kingdom forces.

"Welcome to Good Gentlemen. We were sent by the King to greet the Lord of all. If the Gentlemen are pleased, the King wants to send the Gentlemen all to the palace. But before that, please taste the food that we have brought;" Datuk Tantejo Gerhano said.

The Majapahit Kingdom troops were both delighted and astonished. They thought they would be welcomed by the Pagaruyung Kingdom's war troops, but it turned out to be greeted by friendly beautiful girls and good food.

After enjoying the delicious food, the Majapahit Kingdom troops were escorted to the palace to meet the King. King Pagaruyung greeted them kindly.

"We have the task of capturing Pagaruyung Kingdom" said one of the Majapahit soldiers.

"I understand. All right, how about we replace the war with buffalo. Who is the driver wins, he can rule in this kingdom,” said King Pagaruyung.

The soldiers of Majapahit Kingdom agreed. Then, they prepared a very large and strong buffalo to be pitted against buffalo from Pagaruyung Kingdom.

Pagaruyung Kingdom actually chose a buffalo child who was still breastfeeding with his mother. The baby buffalo was deliberately separated from its mother for three days, so that the baby buffalo can not suckle on the mother and become thirsty. Then, in the mouth of the buffalo child was installed an iron cone-shaped and very pointed.

The appointed day arrived. The bulls were brought to the ring. Majapahit Kingdom has a big and strong buffalo complaint.

"Just beat that little buffalo!" shouted the soldiers of Majapahit Kingdom from the edge of the ring.

The Majapahit Kingdom's buffalo was seen violently attacking his opponent, the little buffalo. Meanwhile, the buffalo child belonging to Pagaruyung Kingdom immediately chased the big buffalo to suckle. Apparently, he thought that the big buffalo was his mother. His little snout tried to reach the belly of his buffalo Iawan, so that the stomach of the Majapahit Kingdom buffalo was injured. Due to more and more injuries, the Majapahit Kingdom buffalo fell and died.

"Manang Kabau! Manang Kabau!" shouts the people of Pagaruyung with joy.

The Majapahit Working Force was allowed to return to his kingdom peacefully without war. Meanwhile, the news of the Pagaruyung Kingdom buffalo's victory became a byword throughout the country. Manang kabau is the language of the locals which means Win buffalo.

Finally, the area was known as Manang Kabau which eventually became Minangkabau.
