origin of Banjarmasin



In ancient times there was a kingdom called Nagara Daha. The kingdom was founded by Putri Kalungsu with his son, Raden Sari Kaburat alias Sekar Sungsang who holds the title of Panji Agung Maharaja Sari Kaburat. That said, Sekar Sungsang a Shiva. la founded the largest temple and lingga in South Kalimantan. The temple that was established was named Candi Laras. The successor of Sekar Sungsang was Maharaja Sukarama. During his reign, the upheaval continued. Although Emperor Sukarama mandated that his grandson, Prince Samudera, would succeed to the throne, Prince Mangkubumi ascended the throne.


The kingdom does not stop experiencing chaos because of the power struggle. That said, anyone occupying the throne will feel insecure from the huddle. Prince Mangkubumi was eventually killed in a power struggle. Since then, Prince Tumenggung became the ruler of the kingdom.


The rightful heir of the kingdom, the Prince of the Ocean, would definitely not be safe if it stayed within the royal environs. With the help of the Royal Patih Nagara Daha, the Prince of the Ocean flees. He disguised himself and lived in a deserted area around the mouth of the Barito River. From Muara Bahan, the main city of Nagara Daha, following the river flow to the mouth of the Barito River, there are villages that stretch or line across the banks of the river. The villages are Balandean, Sarapat, Muhur, Tamban, Kuin, Balitung, and Banjar.


Among the villages, Banjar is the best. Kampung Banjar is formed by five streams whose estuaries meet in the Kuin River.


Because of its good location, Banjar village then developed into a city, a bustling trade city visited by merchant ships from various countries. The city was under the rule of a patih commonly called Patih Masih. The city is also known as Bandar Masih.


Patih Still knows that Prince Samudera, the rightful holder of Nagara Daha, is in his territory. Then, he invited Patih Balit, Patih Muhur, Patih Balitung, and Patih Kuin to negotiate. They agreed to find the Prince of the Ocean in his hiding place to be crowned king, fulfilling the will of Emperor Sukarama.


With the appointment of Prince Samudera became king and Bandar Masih as the center of the kingdom as well as the city of trade, the more desperate the position of Prince Tumenggung. Moreover, the patih do not recognize him anymore as a legitimate king. They were not willing to give tribute to Prince Tumenggung in Nagara Daha.


Prince Tumenggung did not stay silent in the face of that situation. The army and fleet were dropped into the Barito River, resulting in a massive battle. The war continues, there is no certainty which side wins. Patih advised the Prince of the Ocean to ask Demak for help. It is said that according to Patih Masih, at that time Demak became the conqueror of the kingdoms in Java and became the strongest kingdom after Majapahit.


The Prince of the Ocean sent Patih Balit to Demak. Demak agreed to provide assistance, as long as the Prince of Samudera agreed with the conditions they proposed, namely to embrace Islam. The Prince of the Ocean was willing to accept those conditions. Then, a large fleet went to attack the center of Nagara Daha Kingdom. The large fleet consisted of Demak's army and allies from all over Borneo, who assisted Prince Samudera and his supporters. The first gun contact took place in Sangiang Hanging. Prince Tumenggung successfully repulsed and survived at the estuary of the Amandit and Alai Rivers. Victims fell on both sides. The banner of the Prince of the Ocean, Tatunggul Wulung Wanara Putih, more and more fluttering in places of his conquest.


Prince Tumenggung and Prince Samudera boarded a boat called talanggung. The boats were driven by the second commander, on the other side. The two princes wore war clothes and carried machetes, chopsticks, kris, and shields or a telabang.

On the contrary, the Prince of the Ocean could not bear to fight against his uncle. The Prince of the Ocean invited his uncle to kill him. Finally, the heart of Prince Tumenggung also melted. He was able to stare at the Prince of the Ocean not as an enemy, but as his nephew who was in his own blood. Prince Tumenggung threw his weapon. Then, the Prince of the Ocean was embraced. They're crying.


With a sincere heart, Prince Tumenggung handed over power to the Prince of the Ocean. That is, Nagara Daha is in the hands of the Prince of the Ocean. However, Prince Samudera was determined to make Bandar Masih or Banjar Masih as the center of government because the city was closer to the mouth of the Barito River which had developed into a trading city. Not only that, the people of Nagara Daha were brought to Bandar Masih or Banjar Masih. Prince Tumenggung was given a fief in Batang Alai with a thousand people as his people. Nagara Daha became an empty area.


As a Muslim king, Prince Samudera changed his name to Sultan Suriansyah. The victory day of Prince Samudera or Sultan Suriansyah, 24 September 1526, was made the anniversary of the city of Banjar Masih or Bandar Masih.


Because every drought runs (long) water becomes salty (salty), over time the name of Bandar Masih or Banjar Masih becomes Banjarmasin.


Sultan Suriansyah died. His tomb until now is well preserved and visited by many people. It is located in North Kuin, on the banks of the Kuin River, Banjar Utara Subdistrict, Kota Madya District Level II Banjarmasin.


Every September 24th Mayor of Madya Banjarmasin and officials make a pilgrimage to the tomb to commemorate the victory of Sultan Suriansyah over Pangeran Tumenggung. Sultan Suriansyah was the first sultan or king of Banjar who was Muslim.
