Ryan awoke thirty minutes later, and found Gege in the southern meadow near the villa, sitting under a shady tree. Gege sat leaning against a tree trunk, his knees raised, and on top of it Gege folded his hands and buried his face. Gege's skinny hand squeezed out a large leaf that he must have picked up from a dense branch on it.
Ryan knew it was better not to show sympathy to Gege.nHe sat on the grass and waited until Gege saw him. When the young man raised his head, Ryan saw that Gege was not crying. However, during their years of friendship, only this time Ryan sees Gege look like a teenager who suits his age. While talking casually, as if this was just a normal day of their lives, Ryan again asked the same question they had been repeating every day since Farah fell ill: about the drugs they gave him, the dose, the frequency. Even in the midst of a state of panic, their minds followed a pattern of habit, and after feeling tired, Ryan lay down on the grass and stared at the dense tree branch.
"Can we force him to swallow? Is that possible?"
"Maybe" said Gege, "but I don't think so this afternoon."
"What would happen if we doubled the dose of all the drugs we gave him?"
"I've told you before. Convulsions. Death."
"If we raise by a third?" asked Ryan again.
"Ryan, we did it yesterday. I'd kill him with a dose of that" However, Ryan had already jumped up like a whip, pulling Gege along with him while gripping the front of Gege's shirt firmly. For the first time, no one acted as each of them read the fatigue in each other's eyes.
In an uncontrollable voice, Ryan said, "Alright, then. Now you know. I almost finished off a desperate boy like you. Don't force me to do something that will make me apologize later. That girl won't die."
With equally great anger, Gege said, "Why? Because Keith told Farah, he can't die? God and the devil will not listen to Keith. Or do you think the immense guilt can penetrate into his skin and keep him alive? Did you realize that you still call her a 'girl"? Does she have to die before you admit that she was a woman to you in the first place? To me, he is more than just a warm body. Get your fucking hands off my shirt!"
Ryan unleashes Gege at a pace that is sure to frighten people unfamiliar with violence, and Gege finds himself staring into Ryan's cold eyes.
"Don't judge too deeply how you feel about Farah, Ge, Ryan said gently. "You might be surprised."
"Yes! Go ahead, unload all the hypocrisy of others. Is that my hypocrisy? Then, next we will expose your hypocrisy. Why haven't you let Farah go?". The flick of Gege flashed furiously.
Ryan let a cold silence envelop them. When he finally spoke, Ryan's voice sounded light and icy cold. "Every time I see Farah, I know she's willing to obey me".
"You know what's funny? You're pretty sure Farah has a relationship with Andreas, but that's just your excuse to keep her." Gege took a step back, the sudden movement made Gege's shoulders tremble.
"You didn't let Farah go because you wanted to. In fact, I've been able to see him since at that beachside club. That feeling becomes a disease that gnaws at you. But Farah is very young and sensitive, comes from a good family, and it makes your courage evaporate. You could have Farah, but it's easier for your conscience to ignore your need to have her, even if it means you'll become more attached to Farah. An honest man would have raped Farah, then let her go."
"Are you mad at me" asked Ryan in a soft voice, "because I want to take her to bed or because I haven't brought her to bed yet?"
"I'm angry with you because you keep making him a prisoner, while you think about whether your passion is more important than your arrogance. It would be better if you raped Farah and let her go, rather than continue to let her torment for weeks in your captivity."
The leaves that Gege had been clutching had slipped off. Ryan lowered his head to pick it up, and straightened his body back while staring at the shiny leaf, as if the bright color astonished Ryan and prompted him to walk down the finger on top of the leaf bone. When he turned to Gege again, Ryan said, "Why do you think I can do both? You don't know me as well as you think."
"Really?" Gege's answer sounded very cynical. "Then, try to explain to me who you really are. What would you feel if Farah died?"
Gege. Although Ryan could not feel the change in his own expression, he saw Gege close his eyes tightly and cover his eyes and forehead with long arms, which looked thin and dry.
Gege turned around quickly, trying to walk away, but he found that his leg muscles could not function properly. Gege's shock was so great that he almost considered himself ill. Almost. Trying to be practical, Gege immediately knelt down, propping up the body with his hands as he fell to the ground. Gege knelt down, resisting the waves of nausea he felt. A few minutes later, after all that died down, Gege realized that Ryan's arm had supported his shoulder, Ryan's hand pressure was warm and reassuring. Gege muttered, "I'm sorry. Be honest. I didn't mean what I said."
"No problem" Ryan said.
When Gege turned to Ryan, he found Ryan looking at him with a look that radiated kindness. It occurred to Gege that he had never seen Ryan look that late. Fatigue makes Ryan misinterpret Gege's expression.
Ryan said, "I'm sorry for messing it up. Supposedly, I was there with you when Keith did his little drama."
"No. Keith did it on purpose when you weren't there. You know how Keith's method is. Divided and slaughtered to completion." Look at Ryan's face.
Of all the things Ryan asked of him, there was nothing for himself, be it sympathy, a way out, or even a chance to sleep. It's not the first time Gege has realized how selfless Ryan is at making friends, and if anyone thinks differently, then it's an illusion created by the strong impression Ryan leaves on others. Gege felt Ryan pat his back and pulled the man's arm from there. Hoping that he had calmed down enough from the physical contact, Gege looked at Ryan with as much calm as possible.
"You have to shave your hair" Gege said. And, that was a joke between them. No one still remembers the original context, but it seems to have something to do with Gege's hair being much longer than Ryan's. Then, unable to hide his despair, Gegeb said, "Please. Help me keep him alive."
Ryan was sitting cross-legged on the grass, twisting a leaf between his fingers. "You can count on me in that.."
