Folklore Origins of Cianjur City Name

In ancient times in the west Java area there was a very rich man. The entire paddy field and the lading in his village became his. Villagers only become farm labourers who cultivate rice fields and lading rich men. The rich man was nicknamed Pak Kikir by the villagers because he was a very miserly person. His thought was indiscriminate, to the extent that even against his only son he was also very stingy.

Fortunately the nature of the miser was not contagious to his son. Mr. Kikir's son is of good character. Unbeknownst to his father, he often helps his troubled neighbor.

According to the assumption and belief of the village community, if you want a good and abundant harvest, you must hold a thanksgiving party with good as well. Afraid if the next harvest fails, then Pak Kikir forced to hold a thanksgiving party and salvation of all villagers invited by Pak Kikir. Villagers thought they would get a good and delicious meal in the celebration. The estimate was missed, it turned out that Pak Kikir only provided dishes in the style of the meal, and even that was not enough to entertain all invited people. Many invited guests who did not get food. They finally can only stroke the chest for the attitude of Mr. Kikir who again proved to be miserly.

” huh!! Dare to invite people turned out not to be able to provide food, it is outrageous, for what a myriad of his wealth is”

”God won't give blessings to his many carts that”

Thus the gossip and swearing of the poor coloring the celebration held by Pak Kikir.

At the time of the celebration is underway, suddenly came an old grandmother who asked for alms to Pak Kikir.

”Master... Give me alms, even if only with a mouthful of rice..”mintih the old grandmother.

”What alms? You think to cook rice is not needed labor huh…?

”Give me just a little from the rich master's treasure.......??”

”No! Quickly get out of here, otherwise I'll have to hit me to beat you up!!”

The grandmother seemed to shed tears.

Thus the old grandmother did not get alms but was instead expelled violently by Pak Kikir. He immediately left the yard of Mr. Kikir's house.

Seeing the incident, Pak Kikir's son was very sad. He secretly took his lunch rations, and pursued by the grandmother who had reached the end of his village, he gave the food to the grandmother.

The grandmother felt very happy ” good love you son, may your life become glorious”

Because seeing the behavior of Mr. Kikir, the grandmother was angry and said ” remember Mr. Kikr, your greed and parsimony will drown yourself. God will inflict punishment on you”

The grandmother then stuck her wand on the ground, then pulled it again. From the sinkhole it emits very heavy water. The longer the water gets bigger and heads to the village.

“Flood!” “Banjirrr!!!!” shouted the villagers who began to panic to see the flood coming from the valley.

Pak Kikir's son immediately advised the people to immediately leave the village and run to the top of the hill.

“quickly leave this village, flee to the top of the safe hill”

“But our rice fields and livestock how?”

“You choose treasure or soul? There is no time to bring treasure anymore”

The wise son of Pak Kikir kept shouting to remind the villagers. He also persuaded his father to leave the house immediately.

”dad fast stay;lkan this house, we must immediately out save ourselves”

”What? Just run away. *****!! I have to take my treasure chest that I kept in the tank first”

Because there was no time the son of Pak Kikir immediately ran to save himself, while Pak Kikir continued to collect his property. He was late to save himself, finally drowning in the flood.

Most of the villagers including the son of Pak Kikir survived. They were sad to see their village drown. Then they decided to look for a new area. They raised Pak Kikir's son as their new village leader.

Putera Pak Kikir then advised the population to cultivate the land that has been divided equally. The new village leader taught the population to grow rice and how to irrigate the rice fields well. The village was then called Anjuran village, the villagers always obeyed the advice of the leader.

Over time the village developed into a small town called Cianjur. Ci means water. Cianjur means an area that contains enough water. The advice of village leaders is used as a guide for farmers in cultivating rice fields, so until now Bersa Cianjur is known to be very tasty and savory.
