I woke up with an unpleasant jolting sensation. The whole body twitched for a few moments like being electrocuted. The ceiling of the first white room I saw was just silent. I widened my gaze around, making my head protest with a throbbing pain, unable to make me hold back the moans.
I touched the forehead that I thought was the source of the pain. Apparently my head has been bandaged, so has my left wrist. The clock tick that indicates the time is almost three o'clock in the afternoon to be the only sound that fills this room. The bed I was lying in was comfortable, but the fact that this room was not a UKS was something that really bothered my mind. Where is this? The infirmary? What happened until I was here?
“Thank God, you are growing faster than the doctor expected,” said someone who just entered this room.
“Pak Hanri?”
“Hopefully you also recover faster,” he added again, “don't worry, already I make sure you get the best handling. How are you, Shira? Must still hurt huh? Rest first. I've contacted your parents.”
“Eh? My parents?”
“Yes, your mother, she will be the one to watch here.”
“But that's impossible! Where are the friends, sir? What .... what has happened?” I couldn't remember.
“For a while doctors forbid anyone to visit other than family .. and you should recover your health first. This affair is half the responsibility of the school.”
“What solution?”
Again Mr. Hanri just smiled, “I have said, get well first!”
He said so he came out of the room, while I ignored the dizziness that did not go away, again thinking hard. What am I sick of?
Outside, Mr. Hanri had a brief conversation with a female voice. Then the sound of heels approached, being in the doorway of the room. Those pair of eyes remained as brilliant as when I last saw them. The age lines covered make up make it look much younger. Hearing the woman say my name with a trembling voice was really something else. I turned my eyes to dampen the outburst of emotion that started clumping in my chest.
“You really never stop worrying mom,” she said clasping my right hand free from the infusion hose.
“Then ... don't worry about me anymore if it disturbs my mother's life,” I replied with no taste.
“Mother never said so,” she said gently stroking my cheek, “we get better first ya!”
“Terussle!” my answer doesn't matter.
Finally came along, someone I should have missed. However, I think I myself have forgotten the feeling of missing a mother's warm embrace and the whole family. Even the longing I forgot. Five years since we chose each other's path. Mom and Dad no longer believed in each other, but there was no courage to let go of each other. Really shitty circumstances.
Since they attach more importance to their own egos, then I guess I also have the right to do the same. No longer caring, I was dumb with what happened when there should still be some things I could save. But maybe this is his destiny. We go our own way, serving our egos, distancing ourselves from each other. Reasoning for working to prepare for my future, Dad left, mother also stepped aside, fighting over me and my sister. Luckily, I had the same awareness to go my own way. I decided not to choose anyone among them. In the house of the relics of the grandfather I lived freely together with Maurin under the supervision of the grandmother –, which since this year we are the one who watches over the grandmother because she is sick.
Thank goodness my choice was not wrong at all. That way Father and Mother are not burdened at all through their careers, looking for happiness each. Then the fate of something I call this ‘family’? Ah, that makes me wonder, how much longer will all this last? I myself am sick of having to assume everything is fine when it slowly begins to fall under the rubble of reality about how porous ‘rumah’ where I live.
“You must be surprised by the arrival of Mother ‘kan? Well, it just so happens that the cruise ship where Mom works is anchored in Singapore. Once told about you, I'll take the fastest flight. Thank goodness, really on time!” said Mother started chattering, “imagine if the position of Mother is in Turkey, Italy, or even in the Netherlands! Must have taken time ...”
“What's surprising is the tumben once Mom is immediately allowed home?”
“Well, who would prevent a mother from meeting her injured child like this?!”
“If you know this I will not hesitate to jump from the second floor since long ago so that Mother comes home quickly,” said the boy who entered carrying a large parcel of fruits.
“Maurin, why are you so long?” ask Mother.
“And what were your words earlier?!” my connection.
“She's come all the way here, but why don't you meet her, Shira? What was on that man's mind?!” grumble Mother upset.
“Yeah, maybe I forgot. You guys made a deal not to see each other,” I replied.
“What deal, Honey?”
“What deal? Stop acting like nothing, Mom! I've known since it started.”
“You want to squeeze an apple, Brother?” ask Maurin.
“Iya, please!” my reply.
“And you seem to be fine ...” said I'm clean.
“What?”
“It looks like you are fine knowing this rift. Mom is a little happy ...”
“Bu, I think Mother came all the way here not to discuss something as unpleasant as that. Let's discuss next time when Brother has healed,” cut Maurin.
“What's so unpleasant, brother? We have been in such a situation for a long time and managed to survive so far. Obviously it's a normal thing, it doesn't affect our lives .. And one more thing, I'm not sick,” I denied receiving peeled apples and chewing them.
“Whatever you say, Brother. Maybe Big Brother just endured the pain. Confessing the pain after being completely destroyed is you once!” maurin replied indifferently. I frowned in disbelief that this twelve-year-old boy could say something about me. What does he know?!
What was even more surprising was that Mother was completely silent after Maurin's words earlier. Ah, honestly I never wanted to hurt her feelings, but something I did was not wrong? Me and my sister just reflected on what my parents did, looking for freedom –though all we could do was free to talk.
“Hey, actually why am I here?” my many.
“Supposed Brother can remember the cause of your head leak. Pain becomes the most memorable memory too dear to forget,” Maurin replied.
“Are you learning to talk? Your words sound good but too unreasonable!” my dispute. How can pain be said to be effective?!
“Darling, the doctor said we shouldn't discuss that first! I'm worried that your sister is traumatized,” replied Mother. My sister denied, believing that I would not be able to sleep before getting an answer.
I was just about to interrupt before the doctor came to check on me, asking me the complaints that were still being felt.
“So far there is nothing to worry about, but the patient's condition needs to be monitored at least until tomorrow afternoon to make sure everything is fine,” the doctor said before leaving and leaving some medication.
“Thank you, Doctor!” mother replied after that bribing me, not letting me eat alone. My left hand was bandaged, but I was curious about the cause of the pain behind it, while the right hand was quite sore with the traces of the grip left behind. Heeh??? How am I supposed to get all this?
As if attacking me simultaneously, memories of yesterday's events invaded my head. The screams when my hand was wrapped in a cigarette rang out again in my ear. The kids' faces, all I remember, ended with the sound of broken glass. I took a deep breath, closing my eyes.
It's worth it .. it's worth it that Mr. Hanri also feels responsible. Even my mother forced her to go home. Ah, maybe this will indeed be a serious problem that makes me unable to live quietly in the future.
However, my most serious problem was that gray world. How would you react if she knew?
.Seriate.
