Mery and Corazon who were standing on the balcony in hopes of seeing their master's expression beaming upon hearing the news, frowned in shock as Alex walked past them onto the stairs, trembling with pent-up anger that threatened to beat up anyone who stood in his way.
The front door slammed behind Alex and Mery slowly turned around and walked into Hanna's bedroom, then gasped at the sight that greeted her.
Hanna knelt on the floor, near the writing desk, the woman's shoulder shook from crying silently. Hanna's head looked up and tears flowed from her tightly closed eyes. Gripped to Hanna's chest were small white clothes with tiny 'C' letters that Hanna had embroidered affectionately using blue threads.
"Come on, don't cry like that, My dear," Mery said in a choked whisper as he leaned over to help stand up. "You'll be a danger to you."
Hanna thought she wouldn't stop. He cried until his head and throat hurt. He cried until there were no more tears left to shed and he felt dry and empty. "I don't want it!"
The three words gripped Hanna's heart, squeezing and twisting until Hanna was unable to breathe.
***
When dawn broke, Hanna rolled to the side, staring at the gray light of the morning. She was alone in bed, alone all night for the first time in their marriage.
Alex doesn't want a baby Hanna. Their babies. Will Alex not admit the boy? Oh, God, no! Alex couldn't. couldn't be. Why? Hanna closed her eyes, turned her head to the pillow. Alex is gonna force Hanna to let go of this baby. That's what Alex would do.
The man would look for a foster mother once the baby was born and send the baby to a distant place to be raised in one of Alex's estates, away from them.
"Is Alex's need for me and myself more important than this kid?" hanna whispered tears from the corner of her eyes. Hanna thinks that the reason for Alex's refusal is not to want Hanna's body to be ugly and can't satisfy the man on the bed!
So much selfishness in Alex that there is no place for their child?
A few hours ago, Hanna may not have known how she felt about this pregnancy, but now she knows. Alex's rejection of the baby stirred up a protective wave within her, so great that it shook her. Hanna would never let Alex send their baby anywhere else. It will never!
Hanna woke up too late. His head was still sore and he felt nauseous and dizzy, but he forced himself to go down and have breakfast. Alex's seat in front of Hanna was still neat. "His Grace said she wasn't having a taste for breakfast, My Lady" a waiter told Hanna.
Hanna ate a lot for the sake of the baby, then went out for a walk.
Not knowing where Alex was, she did not enter Hanna's bedroom until shortly before dawn.
Hanna walked across a neatly arranged rose garden filled with different beds for red, white, pink, and yellow roses, then pass through an artificial lake where geese swim without direction above the calm surface of the lake.
Hanna's step led her to the whitewashed pavilion on the furthest edge facing the lake, then she entered and sat on the colorful pillows spread on the bench.
Hanna sat there for two hours, while her brain was raging, trying to accept the fact that she was the same person as yesterday, that this was the same life she had lived.
He returned home and slowly climbed up the stairs, only to find Alex's personal butler and three servants busy removing Alex's clothes from the man's room. Hanna was almost crazy. "What are they doing?" hanna asked Corazon. "Corazon, tell me, why did they move my husband's things?"
"His Grace will move to the east wing" Corazon explained, forcing herself to sound concise and unafraid. "We'll move your belongings to His Grace's bedroom, and your bedroom will be a beautiful nursery in due time."
"Oh," whispered Hanna, wondering how she could stand being in that room without Alex. "Can you show me the location of His Grace's new room? I. I have to ask his head about this. We're gonna go out." Corazon takes Hanna to an elegant room in the farthest east wing and leaves Hanna alone there.
Alex was not there. He's already gone. Alex's shirt was draped on the chair and his gloves were lying on the bed, where he threw them.
Hanna walks into the clothes room and caresses the back of Alex's comb made of oniks stone and must endure crying.
"A wide boat" said Hanna. He always liked Alex's broad shoulders, and the man's eyes.
Hanna was walking towards the door when Alex walked in. Without saying anything, Alex walked past Hanna, got into the clothes room, and started taking off the jacket.
Hanna followed Alex, unable to remove the sobs from her voice as she asked, "Why are you doing this, Alex?"
Alex took off the shirt, but did not answer. "Why is it because of our baby?" hanna whispered.
Alex looked at Hanna. "Because of a baby," the correction.
"You.. You don't like little kids?"
"If not someone else's child" Alex said coldly. After tossing the shirt onto the chair, Alex turned around, grabbed Hanna's elbow with a painful grip, then forcefully led the woman out of the room.
"But you must want your own child," Hanna said hoarsely as she was violently pushed into the corridor under the gaze of the passing servant.
"My own son," Alex emphasized a menacing tone. He stood looming over Hanna with one hand on the door as if to slam the door right in front of the woman's face.
"Are we going to Wilson's husband and wife tonight? I. I've accepted their invitation to sing and then."
"I'll go out, you can do whatever you want."
"But" Hanna pleaded. "Are you going to Wilson's husband and wife? If you want to go.."
"No!" snapped Alex. Then in a horrible voice, Alex added, "And if I find you in this room again or even in the wing building of this house again, I will drive you out myself. And I guarantee you, Hanna, you're not gonna like the way I do it." The door slammed in front of Hanna's face.
Alex stood quietly in the bedroom, by the side of the closed door, clenched his hands and opened as he tried to control a rage. Until dawn this morning, Alex was drinking drunk in the study. But not before he considers carefully and coldly all the means that can be done to avenge his misused love and trust.
Alex is about to find a mistress, deliberately showing off the woman until Hanna learns of the mistress' whereabouts. Society will ignore married men who have mistresses, always have.
But Hanna will be caught in a dilemma. Hanna wouldn't be able to go alone too often without stirring up rumors. And if Hanna shows up often with other men, she will be denounced and ostracized by society.
But even that is not enough. If Hanna was going to give birth to a child, and Alex had to give her name to the child, then by God, she would not look at the child and wonder whose child it was!
Alex will throw the bastard away from him. But not immediately. First, he would let Hanna take care of the child for a year or two until the woman was attached to the child, then he would take the baby away from Hanna. The boy will be Alex's main weapon.
It doesn't even matter if the boy is the fruit of Hanna's forbidden relationship with the goddamn woman's lover or if it's real proof of Alex's own passion.
