capter eleven: prophet noah

Noah was the third prophet to be believed after Adam the US and Idris the US. Noah is the ninth descendant of Adam.

The name Noah comes from the Syriac word 'grateful'. Noah also received the title of Allah SWT as abdussyakur. The title means the servant who is much grateful according to the letter of Al-Isra verse 3.[That is] the posterity of those whom We brought with Noah. Verily he is a much grateful servant of [God]" reads the translation of Al-Isra verse 3.

Noah also entered the apostle Ulul Azmi, the apostle with great fortitude and determination. According to Al-Ankabut verse 14, Noah even preached for 950 years.

Noah was sent by Allah SWT to call on the teachings of Allah to the people of the House of Destiny who worship idols in the form of statues. Tyranny at that time was also increasing rapidly.With patience, Noah began to preach to his people. He taught us to worship God, to forsake evil, and to do good.

However, instead of obeying, the people of Noah still did not believe the teachings and warnings conveyed. The Banu Rasib did not even believe that Noah was an apostle.

"According to history, the number of followers of Noah US is not more than 80 people. The followers of the US Prophet Noah were made up of poor and weak people," quoted from the US Prophet Noah: The Wonder of the Great Ark by Testriono and Tim Divaro.

But Noah did not break charcoal. He continued to preach despite receiving many reproaches. Every time Noah preached, they put his finger in his ear and covered his face with the clothes of rejection. The story of Noah's struggle is found in the Letter of Noah verses 1-12.Followers of Noah even to be expelled by the rulers and the rich people of that time.

The people of Noah also challenged Noah to bring about the torment that Noah always delivered.

"They said, 'O Noah, verily you have rebutted with us, and you have extended your rebuttal against us, so bring us the torment which you have cursed us, if you belong to the righteous'." Here is the translation of Hud verse 32.

Noah replied that the punishment could only be brought by God. Allah asked Noah not to grieve and to stand firm.

Noah prayed that Allah would punish the disbelievers. Allah ordered Noah to build an ark in the form of a large ship to transport the faithful and a pair of animals. Allah says the disbelievers will be drowned.

On that order, Noah gathered his followers and royong made wooden arks during the day and night in a few years. Noah's hard work also received scorn from those who were despicable.After the ark was made and the sign of the great flood would come, Noah ordered his followers to board the ship. Slowly, the flood began to sink the land.

"Then We saved Noah and the men who were with him in the ship full of cargo. Then after that We drowned the people who remained" reads the translation of the letter of Ash-Shu'ara verses 119-120.

In those who were drowned, including the eldest son of Noah, Kan'an and his disobedient wife. Noah had invited Kan'an to board the ship, but he refused and was sure to save himself from the big water.

Noah realized that the love of his son made him forget God. And Noah asked Allah for forgiveness and delivered his son who had died and was among the disbelievers.

Noah's ship pulled over in the mountains of Arafat. After the waters receded, God commanded Noah to come down and start a new life, may we take the fortitude and patience of Noah in thanking and worshiping Allah SWT as one of the important lessons.

From this story it is also known that God's promise of punishment and retribution in the form of disaster is true. Retaliation will come in time. Allah will save his faithful.

"When experiencing the trials of Allah, people are saved or not, depending on the mercy of Allah, not because of whose descendants, not because of the children of the Prophet. Without fear, his fate would be like that of Noah's son

Noah's real name is Abdul Ghaffar or Yasykur who is the son of Lamik bin Matta bin Idris AS. Thus, Noah is the grandson of Prophet Idris or the 3rd derivative of Prophet Idris. Noah lived in the world for 950 years according to the letter of Al-Ankabut verse 14. 

At the age of 480, he was sent as an Apostle through the angel Gabriel disguised as a man with a very handsome face so that Noah was amazed and then asked. Then the angel Gabriel replied that he was the messenger of God who brought the treatise and declared that God sent Noah to straighten his people who were rebellious and unjust.

My son, get on this ship so that you may be saved.

Darmasyil was a descendant of the 4th prophet Adam and was a despotic king and leader at the time. Darmasyil was the first man to make wine and drink it, he was also the first man to gamble, and made gold ornaments where gold was a material that men should not use.

King Darmasyil is also a King who worshiped and held 5 idols, namely Wad, Shiva’, Ya’uq, Yaghuts, and Nasr. Darmashil's actions were so unjust and disbelieving that Allah gave a very strong warning to the angel Gabriel to be passed on to Noah.

Noah's outrageous people made Allah SWT send a painful and severe punishment, namely in the form of flood. But earlier, Noah was ordered to make a very large and powerful ark to accommodate his followers who obey and believe in Allah SWT. 

The construction of the ark took about 40 years. During the process of making the ark was also the patience of Noah continued to be tested in the form of ridicule and insults from his people who wronged. The work of Noah was considered a futile effort and the work of a madman for building an ark on a barren desert hill. 

Floodwaters first came out of an oven or tank in the kitchen of Noah who then continued to pour out to grow. Noah gathered his faithful people to protect themselves and enter the ark. Noah also brought all kinds of animals in pairs ranging from wild stars, birds, elephants, cows, to ants.

Noah's wife and son Kan’an rebelled and scorned Noah's ark so that they did not board. There were only about 80 believers who entered the ark and other animals. Allah SWT by his power has arranged everything so that livestock are not preyed upon by wild animals, Allah lowers the fever to the wild animal until its wild instincts come down.

After all the followers of Noah and the animals entered the ark, the entrance and the entire ark door were closed. Thus, the water of Hijan began to flow from various corners of the earth with a relentless rush. This is a rain that has never happened as long as the earth was created and until now there has never been heavy rain so great. In an instant the water discharge increased and there was a flood so fierce that flooded the earth.

Noah had 4 sons, Kan’an, Yafith, Sam, and Ham. The eldest son of Noah was a wicked and unjust son. At first he hid his hatred for his own father and pretended to believe. When Noah gathered all his people together, he remembered his eldest son, Kan’an. 

Kan’an was asked to go up to the ark with his other followers, but arrogantly Kan’an refused. When the flood began to rise, Noah continued to persuade the child to board the ark and said, “Hi my son, go up to this ship so that you may be saved from the torment of Allah and do not enter into the disbelievers” (Q.S. Hud: 43).

Kan’an then replied: “I will seek refuge to the mountain that can keep me from the flood and answered also by Noah: “Nobody protects today from the torment of Allah other than Allah (only) the Most Merciful.” The conversation of Noah and Kan’an contained in the Qur’an surah Hud verse 43.

The flood then increased and Kan’an still did not want to get into the ship and wanted to save themselves by running towards the top of the mountain that had not been touched by water. But his efforts were in vain because the flood waters also submerged even the highest mountain peaks.

Seeing his son drown and disappear, as a father Noah felt very sad because Kan'an who was very dear to him was drowned by the torment of Allah. Noah asked God to save his son because God had promised salvation for his entire family. But Allah replied that his son had been disobedient and was not among the family that God promised to be saved.

The conversation between Noah and Allah SWT is enshrined in Surah Hud which means, “Yes my Lord, my son is my family, and indeed Your promise is the truth. And You are the fair Judge” (QS. Huds :45). 

Then Allah answered: “Hai Noah, he was not of your family (who was promised to be saved) indeed his deeds, deeds that were not good.Therefore, he was not, do not ask Me for something that you do not know (truth). Verily I warn you not to be among the uninformed” (QS. Hud: 46).

Noah's Ark sailed for 150 days in the limitless sea until the flood waters subsided with the faithful in it. The ship continued to sail until the wrongdoers of Noah were not left. After all the evil people of Noah sank, then God commanded the earth to suck all the water and commanded the heavens to stop the torrential rain. 

After the flood waters receded, the ark washed up on Mount Judi which was then used to rest and start a new life of peace and fear to Allah SWT. However, for the location of Mount Judi, there are many disagreements, some say in Armenia or Turkey.

According to history, all followers of Noah who survived in Noah's ark will die and leave no descendants. Only the sons of Noah, Japhith, Sam, and Ham, had children. In other words, that all mankind on earth today is a descendant of the son of Noah which is divided into 3 derivatives.

Yafith gave birth to Rum (Roman) descendants and is now rapidly developing into a European nation. Sam and his descendants are the origin of the Arab nation that now inhabits the Arab region and the Middle East in the continent of West Asia. As well as the last son, Ham produced descendants of the Habasyah who are now descendants of Africans who inhabit the African continent.
