The Third Party

The Third Party
29. Accident

After a few days, my mother-in-law improved. Me and Sandy went back to our house. Don't think my in-laws love me for taking care of them, not at all. My in-laws' attitude is still the same to me.

Me and Sandy continued our days as usual.

Today Sandy is leaving town. For the next three days he will stay there. He asked me to visit his mother once in a while. Since his mother was sick, Handi regularly visited his mother. And since he was going out of town he asked me to take his place to visit his mother.

I also obey him. Early in the morning I had cooked my favorite food in-laws that I would bring when visiting his house. This is all I can give you.

"Don't forget to come to mom's house for a while. Please look at her situation, whether she needs something or not." Sandy reminded me again.

"Yes ... I hear, how many times do you want to repeat?"

Sandy chuckled at my answer. "You forgot."

"I won't forget. I'm not senile! Nihh ... I've cooked my mother's favorite food. Later I will deliver this food," I replied while showing the food I had packed in the container.

After that, Handi approached Damar who I put to sleep on the carpet as usual.

"Room ... Later father go you don't be naughty, take care of mom. Don't make your mother sad. You know that's a little whiz?" Handi kissed Damar several times. I just smiled to see it.

"He's a baby, doesn't know what you're talking about."

"It's okay, what's important is that I talk to her so she can remember her father's voice."

"Why should he remember, can he not hear your voice every day?"

"I'm going?!"

"Jan's only three days, you told Damar like you were going away." I feel weird about Handi's message to Damar.

After finishing breakfast, me and Handi both left. Handi went to work while I was going to his mother's house, it just so happened that my homework was done.

After a journey of not fifteen minutes I arrived at my in-laws' house. Looks like my in-laws are having guests, but no other vehicles are parked in the yard.

I said my greetings but no one answered so I went straight into the house. There were no guests inside, only Heni. He was sitting with my in-laws in the living room.

Today Heni looks different. There was no arrogant look in his eyes. Even I'm sure she's been crying out from her puffy, swollen eyes. But I don't want to know, it's none of my business.

"Have you eaten? I brought you mom's favorite food."

"Put it on the table" said my in-laws flat.

I came with Damar, but none of them cared.

I went back to put the food on the dinner table. After that, I said goodbye because there was nothing I had to do here anymore. There was already Heni accompanying my in-laws. Damar's been a little fussy since his father's departure, so I better get home.

My phone that had been ringing until I ignored it because I was confused how to calm Damar down. Until finally Damar calmer then I sped to see my phone. There were a lot of missed calls from numbers I didn't know.

Who'sisthis?

Since I'm not at work, people rarely call me. The call list on my phone is just Handi's number, nothing else.

I tried to call that number. Then I fell limp to hear the answer from the person across the phone.

*

With a half-run step I looked for the room where Handi was in the care. It turned out to be the phone number of the hospital who wanted to tell if Handi had an accident and now he is in a coma. As soon as I heard about Handi's accident, I sent Damar to my neighbor and then I quickly went to this hospital.

Up in front of the intensive care room my legs felt limp. Can I see the situation of Handi inside?

I strengthened myself to enter Handi's room in the hospital. Handi was lying on the bed with many hoses attached to his body. From the outside Handi looks fine, there are no cuts just a slight bruise on his right temple. The rest he looks like always. His face was bright even as if he was smiling. I sat by his bed. Unable to the power of tears my eyes dripped to see Handi lying helpless.

"Dam ... Awake baby. I'm coming" I said in a hoarse voice.

I never imagined this would happen. I grabbed Handi's hand and held her tightly but there was no reply from her hand. His hands were cold and did not respond to my hands at all.

"Wake up Han, don't leave me alone" I whispered. "The room can't take care of me yet, I need you. I need you to take care of me and Damar. I beg you not to leave now," I continued in a barely audible voice.

I rubbed his hand, hoping it would wake him up. I kept looking at her smiling face as if she heard and understood my words. But it made me cry deeper.

No, I can't afford to lose my husband. Handi must be healed. He'll be fine.

"Let's raise Damar together. We'll see him grow up. I need you as his father, I can't stand to be alone ... " I can't speak anymore. I immediately came out of this treatment room because only a short time my tears had drained out.

Outside the room I immediately contacted her brothers Handi to tell her news. After a while Ma'am Eka and Mas Aaron came. Mas Hasan is still on his way.

"How's Emma's story?" mas Aaron asked as soon as he found me in front of the intensive care room.

"I don't know Mas, I got here already like this. There's no one I can ask, no one from the company."

"Then what is the condition?"

"I don't know either. I haven't met the doctor who handled it yet" I replied with tears in her eyes. I'm scared, I'm afraid Handi won't survive.

"You try to find Mas's doctor, you ask how he is," Mbak Eka ordered.

Mas Aaron nodded then he left.

"Calm down Emm, Handi's gonna get well. We're trying to get the best treatment."
