The Phoenix Reborn Book II
Chapter 17 Wang Chengliu and Wu Meilan

*Some time ago*

Upon seeing Wu Meilan's figure nodding his head, Liang Fenghong immediately carried Huang Miaoling's body that felt so light from the bed. The girl was a little surprised, but quickly pointed to the bottom of the bed, hinting that she could hide there.

“You don't need to hide,” Huang Miaoling said in a low tone.

Actually, the girl was not wrong. Liang Fenghong had absolutely no need to hide to avoid anyone who was outside the room. It would make more sense to stay here on the pretext of discussing something with Wu Meilan and pretending nothing happened.

However, Liang Fenghong shook his head. There were so many people who could approach Wu Meilan's residence, but not many would break through Princess Wu's gate so presumptuously. Benak Liang Fenghong turned around, estimating that whoever had just come would be on behalf of an intruder who had sneaked into the palace of Emperor Weixin to inspect the Wu Meilan residence. Only, the real purpose was definitely not to look for an intruder, but rather to find Huang Miaoling!

There are no coincidences in this world. Therefore, the arrival of these uninvited people in such a presumptuous manner was clearly planned. Thinking up to there, Liang Fenghong knew that hiding inside this room was not an option. Even if he had already told the Princess what to do, the man did not feel safe letting Huang Miaoling hide in this room.

“Who has so impulsively disturbed the tranquility of my residence?”

It was heard by Liang Fenghong that Wu Meilan's voice was so firm. That tone was quite in accordance with his direction earlier, reminding Liang Fenghong that even though the princess was used to being confined within the Wu royal palace, but the Emperor's blood did flow in her body.

‘Same as ...’ Liang Fenghong's forehead wrinkled, reminding himself to stay focused.

With noiseless footsteps, Liang Fenghong darted towards the Princess's study room opposite his bedroom. While Huang Miaoling was in his arms, Liang Fenghong pushed a small window of the study room that led to the back area of the building with his sides. He checked the situation by making sure there was no sound indicating the presence of someone in the back area of the building.

After making sure there were no people, even Liang Fenghong carefully slipped out. To erase their tracks, Huang Miaoling stuck out his hand to remind the man to close the window again. Of course, the warning was not entirely needed because Liang Fenghong also knew about what to do, but it seemed that the girl could not help but express her concerns.

Liang Fenghong set his sights on a tree near the side of Wu Meilan's residence, the bushes surrounding the tree thick enough to serve as a hiding place. He settled down to the end of the wall and stuck his head out to look at Wu Meilan's courtyard situation.

It was seen by Liang Fenghong that neither Wu nor Shi's bodyguards were on the side of the courtyard, making him grateful that there was a way for him to reach his hiding place. With Huang Miaoling in his carriage, Liang Fenghong darted towards the tree and ducked among the bushes. It was quite surprising for Huang Miaoling with the man's agility.

Arriving at their temporary hiding place, Liang Fenghong let half of Huang Miaoling's body rest on the grassy ground. Then, his gaze turned to watch the movements of the Shi kingdom's troops that were able to be seen from his hiding place.

“From all places, you chose a place so open,” whispered Huang Miaoling with a smile painted on his face. “Indeed Young Master Liang wise.”

Although it sounded sarcastic, but Liang Fenghong knew that Huang Miaoling understood the reason for him to do this. In a situation like the one they were in right now, the easiest hiding place to find was the safest hiding place. Logically, no fugitive would hide in such a dangerous place when he realized he was being chased. Therefore, the investigators would not waste time looking for people in such an open place.

It's a mental and mind game.

Unless the other party had intelligence equivalent to Liang Fenghong's mind, then it was clearly the best way to hide. Otherwise, then the man's actions would be tantamount to sending a reward to the enemy.

It is also what makes this situation a game of luck.

Liang Fenghong's gaze descended down, staring at Huang Miaoling who was in his arms. “Do you feel better?” asked the man with a worried face. “Just relax, even if the worst happens, I will make sure you are safe.” His forehead wrinkled, showing himself willing to sacrifice anything for the sake of this girl before him.

Huang Miaoling's gaze softened. “We're at the palace, even if they want to kill me, they can't do it right now.” A faint smile was painted on his face. “Again, what can they do? Punishing couples who are spending wonderful time under shady trees?” There was a seductive light emanating from that pair of black eyes when describing their current condition.

For a moment, Liang Fenghong's ears buzzed. Her gaze could not shift from Huang Miaoling's face, the girl had managed to hypnotize the man completely. However, Liang Fenghong's instincts that resuscitated him regarding their current situation shouted out loud.

With furrowed brows and frowns furrowed, the Young Master Liang looked at his future wife. “After everything you've been through, can you still joke?” There was anger in his tone. Some of those emotions were just a pretense to cover up his awkwardness, but some were pure feelings due to Huang Miaoling's recklessness that almost cost him his own life.

Likely, someone had even sacrificed their lives for being involved with this girl.

Huang Miaoling's eyes gnawed at Liang Fenghong's face, for a second the girl's gaze did not move from the face of the man who was supposed to be her husband. “I believe you,” said Huang Miaoling making Liang Fenghong's anger instantly evaporate. His hand that was beginning to gain strength stretched out to touch the man's face. “Do you believe me?”

The next second, Liang Fenghong clasped Huang Miaoling's hand. “Do you still need to ask?”

“Greetings to the Fourth Prince and the Sixth Prince!”

The shout did not avert Huang Miaoling's gaze from Liang Fenghong. In the past life, that couldn't have happened. The effect of the Sixth Prince's name on a Huang Miaoling was huge, big enough to wake him up while sleeping and smile when crying.

Just a moment ago, things that were not much different also applied to Huang Miaoling's self in this life. The name Wang Chengliu was able to make her smiling self lose its light, even in sleep.

Now, different.

Huang Miaoling's gaze absorbed every inch of the existence of the man before him. Then, he smiled. “Good. That way, you should know what I really want to do, right?”

Seeing the arrival of his master, Chenxiao immediately walked out of the room and knelt before Wang Junsi and Wang Chengliu. “Greetings to the Fourth Prince and the Sixth Prince,” he said as he clutched his fist.

“Chenxiao, why did you bring the palace guards here?” w.a.n.g Junsi asked, his voice sounded a little more raucous than usual. She cleared her throat, trying to make everyone think that her voice was coming from her uncomfortable neck. “What is this?” added again.

Chenxiao opened his mouth to reply, “Fourth Prince's aircrew, just a moment ago an intruder sneaked into the Emperor's palace. Lucky the heavens blessed his son and nothing happened to His Majesty the Emperor. It's just, the intruder ran away and I was following security protocol to check every corner of the palace.”

Hearing Chenxiao's reply, Wang Junsi frowned as if surprised. “Even honored guest residence?” His tone questioned the truth in Chenxiao's words. He then turned to Wang Chengliu. “Sixth Adik, isn't this—”

Before Wang Junsi could finish her speech, Wang Chengliu raised his hand, stopping her brother's remark. He then said to the Fourth Prince, “Fourth Brother, calm down first.” His gaze turned to Wu Meilan and he bowed to the Princess of Wu kingdom. “Mr Princess, I hope you forgive my subordinate's carelessness. Just like the other loyal palace guards, he only followed orders obediently and was unable to think much about your position in this kingdom.”

Wu Meilan frowned when he heard Wang Chengliu's words. Although the man's tone sounded so condolent and flattering, but the expression on the man's face was so empty, it did not contain the slightest bit of sincerity, proving that Wang Chengliu's lips were expressing lies. This made the Princess of Wu kingdom upset.

Putting aside the personal reason that made him act annoyed towards Wang Chengliu, Wu Meilan clearly heard Chenxiao say that the one who lowered the order was the Sixth Prince himself. From Wang Chengliu's own words, the man admitted that Chenxiao was only acting on his orders. If he really respected Wu Meilan, shouldn't the prince warn his subordinates not to approach Wu Meilan's residence?

Since Chenxiao came to Wu Meilan's residence and insisted on checking her room—even after being thrown insinuations by the Princess regarding her situation being single—then that meant Wang Chengliu never looked at her at all himself as an honored guest. Everything Wang Chengliu said that had just left the man's mouth was sheer nonsense! The prince was clearly targeting his residence because he knew Huang Miaoling must be here!

“Sixth Prince,” call Wu Meilan make Wang Chengliu raise his gaze. “If it's true that you have so much respect for me, then it's good that you prove it now.” His view looks unfriendly. “Your subordinates have been acting disrespectfully towards me, it clearly violates your belief towards me, doesn't it?”

The employer respects a person, but the subordinate instead insults and acts badly towards that person. It was clearly like betraying the trust of the Master.

Punishment must be given.

Hearing Wu Meilan's words, Wang Chengliu who was staring at the girl sighed while closing his eyes, as if regretting the actions of his subordinates. However, he then straightened his body. He then opened his eyes and gave an extremely terrifying look towards the Princess Royal Wu.

Wang Chengliu's gaze made Wu Meilan very surprised. ‘P-what view is it? Does he intend to threaten me?’ The princess clenched her hands, trying to strengthen her slightly quivering self under the Sixth Prince's ominous gaze.

“Mr Princess Wu, I'll keep it bright,” Wang Chengliu start. “As for everyone to be very condescending towards you because you are the biological daughter of Emperor Huatai and also the embodiment of peace between the two kingdoms, I do not feel worthy to do the same.”
