Guests in Islam have a very respectable standing. Therefore, the people are commanded to glorify guests, so that they become guidance and noble character. Many verses of the Qur'an and the hadith are associated with this practice.
One of them is the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah RA. In the hadith, the Prophet juxtaposes two main practices in Islam, namely doing good to neighbors, and glorifying guests.
''Whoever believes in Allah and the Hereafter should glorify his neighbor, and whoever believes in Allah and the Hereafter should glorify his guest.'' (Mutafaq'alaih)
Imam al-Qadhi Iyadh in interpreting the above hadith, explained, when the people try to practice Islamic Shari'a, it is mandatory for him to glorify his neighbors and guests, and do good to both.
On the other hand, there is also the hadith that relates the glorification of the guest to the perfection of faith, to Allah and the last day. This is an effort towards a complete faith, given faith in Allah and the last day, is part of the six pillars of faith that must be believed by all people.
Islam not only encourages people to glorify guests, but also details the things the host needs to do. Among others, welcome him with a pleasant face, invite to sit, serve food and drink, and fulfill the rights of his guests. Even when the guest comes home, the host should take him to the door, and it is not recommended to close the door before the guest leaves.
Furthermore, in entertaining guests, there are several opinions among scholars. First, stating the law of sunah, is not mandatory. This is the opinion of jumhur (mostly) scholars such as Abu Hanifa, Malik, and Asy Syafi'i. While scholars such as Imam Ahmad and others, argue the law is mandatory. The postulate is the hadith of Abu Shuraih al Adawi.
''Whoever believes in Allah and the last day should glorify his guest. What do the Companions mean by the jaizah? The Prophet replied, ''The body is to host one day one night (with a banquet that is more special than the day after).'' (Bukhari and Muslim HR).
