Sumayahs
Exemplary Story

Leaving Kevin stricken with the deepest regret. Away from Juan's life filled with darkness. Avoiding the intoxicating worldly glitter. Return to the peace of life Sumayah and Salim in a remote village in the North.

That night Sumayah told Salim a story before their sleep. The story that the five-year-old boy will remember for the rest of his life. Not a story taken from the bitter journey of his life, but the story of the struggle of a Shaytah in the time of the Prophet.

"Mother, whose story will you tell this time? Is he as good as Umar? Or as honest as Abu Bakr? Or is it as generous as Uthman? Or is he as smart as Ali? Tell me whose story is next, Mother?" cecar Salim impatiently wanted to hear the next story that Sumayah would tell.

"This is a story about a sholehah woman. He maintained his faith to the point of the final blood. Salim must be able to take wisdom from the story that I will tell.

His tawhid was so firm, as hard as steel. The light of faith in his heart never dimmed. He was willing to have his blood spilled, in order to defend Islam, the religion he believed to be true. The history of Islam bears its name in the golden ink of history. He was the first Muslim to die in the way of Allah.

The noble woman worthy of the eve was named Sumayyah bint Khayyat. Originally, Sumayyah was only a servant of the Sahaya. With great patience and perseverance, he worked for Abu Hudzaifah ibn Al-Mughirah. His good temper made Abu Hudzaifah marry Sumayyah to his adoptive brother Yasir, a man from Yemen.

From the results of the marriage, the couple Sumayyah and Yasir were blessed with a son named Ammar. The happiness of Sumayyah increased, when Abu Hudzaifah freed Ammar from slavery. After his master died, the Sumayyah family lived under the protection of the Bani Makhzum until Ammar matured with Sumayyah and Yasir who also entered old age.

Until finally, a good news for all mankind arrived. A man named Muhammad SAW came to bring the light of faith and religion that is desired by Allah SWT, namely Islam. Muhammad was an apostle who brought glad tidings and perfected human morals.

The news of the coming of the new Prophet shook all over Makkah.  There are people who are interested, but many more who refuse. Ammar bin Yasir, curious, then went to the Prophet at the house of Arqom bin Arqom and listened directly to the revelation sent down by Allah SWT.

Ammar knew very well the nature and morals of a Muhammad who was very commendable. He was immediately convinced by the truth of the word of Allah SWT conveyed through the Prophet SAW. Without hesitation, Ammar made his pledge and became a Muslim. With great joy, Ammar delivered the news of the coming of the prophet to his mother and father.

The light of faith illuminated the hearts of Sumayyah and Yasir.  The two then followed in the footsteps of the son. Then, become a Muslim and a Muslim. Unlike the Sumayyah family, most Quraysh people are very anti even hostile to Islam, the teachings brought by the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

At first, Sumayyah and her family hid their faith in Islam. However, the tawhid hidden tightly was finally known as well. Knowing Sumayyah and her family had converted to Islam, the wrath of the polytheists, especially the Bani Makhzum who had been protecting them.

Terror and torment began to plague them.  The polytheists forced Sumayyah along with her husband and son to renounce their faith. Their low position, making the Sumayyah family must be stoic in the face of pressure and torture. They only always ask for protection and help from Allah SWT.

The Quraysh mercilessly tortured and dragged them through the streets, then led them into the desert in the scorching sun. The disbelievers then put armor on them to increase the suffering of Sumayyah. After their sweat stopped flowing, their bodies dried up, and their blood began to pour out, they were forced to return apostatizing from the Islamic religion and forced to insult and revile the Prophet.

The harshness of the torment did not make their faith waver. Eventually, Abu Jahl intervened to torture Sumayyah and her family. Their hands and feet were tied and then thrown over sharp and hot pebbles. The whip that wounded their bodies was unable to break their belief in the truth of Islam.

In the midst of cruel torture, Sumayyah courageously challenged Abu Jahl, a feared leader of the Quraysh. Abu Jahl was furious to hear a woman challenge him. He then killed Sumayyah in a vile way, to cover up his sense of prestige, which a woman had challenged.

Sumayyah also died as the first martyr. He was the first Islamic hero to die defending the religion of Allah. The Prophet specifically prayed for the Sumayyah family. ''Patience to the Yasir family. Verily, your reward is heaven, said the Prophet SAW.

It turns out that the role of women in defending Islam is very big. Sumayyah, as the seventh person to convert to Islam, dared to sacrifice his life to defend the truth of Allah's religion. Indeed, Sumayyah is a Muslim who deserves to be a role model and role model. His name is remembered all the time."

"Sumayya?" salim said repeating the name of the shahidah that his mother told him. Sumayah nodded in response.

"Why is her name the same as my mother's? Sumayah," he repeated again this time where his mother called.

"Right, dear, but Sumayyah the shahidah lived in the time of the Prophet. He was the first shahidah to die for maintaining faith until the end of his life," replied Sumayah again smiling in response to Salim's question.

"What is shahida, Mother?" inquiringly.

"Shaahidah or shahid for men is he who died in a state of defending the religion of Islam. He who is willing to change his life to defend his monotheism" explained Sumayah as she rubbed her son's cheek gently.

"So, under no circumstances should we give up? Is that so?" the question is getting more curious.

"Rubber! And did Salim know what Sumayah said when she had to be willing to die at the hands of Abu Jahl?" Salim shook his head slowly with a serious face.

"Let me be slain in the temporary world because I will live forever in heaven. Let me part with the family in the world for a while because I will be with them forever in heaven. Isn't she a strong woman? Prefer to die rather than having to revert back to apostasy," explained Sumayah again more firmly.

"Murthad? What'sthat?" The more curious the little heart of a Salim.

"Murtad, is out of the religion of God. Turning to a God other than Allah" explained Sumayah again patiently.

Silent. Salim was silent with a look down. Maybe he was digesting what Sumayah said.

"What wisdom can Salim take from this story?" asked Sumayah while rubbing her son's hair.

Salim raised his gaze, his eyes staring seriously as if he was thinking hard.

"Just like Umar, he loved the Prophet so much that he dared to challenge anyone who brought news of the Prophet's death. That is how a Sumayyah just like those friends who love the Prophet and the religion of Allah he is willing to change his life to defend it. Is that so, Mother?" salim said with the same view.

"What else?" The little forehead wrinkled, thinking back what more wisdom he could take.

"She was willing to part with her family on earth in order to be reunited in heaven? Is that ... are we going to split up, Mother? But Salim won't part with Mom, Salim can't do anything without Mom. What if I leave Salim?" The boy almost cried when he imagined himself having to part with his mother.

"Salim just has to be sure, God will bring us together again in a better situation. Can Salim do it?" ask Sumayah. The boy's head nodded obediently.
